This just came to me as I was thinking about how much I am looking forward to Tekken 6, especially the character customization feature (it's always fun to make fighters look retarded). I realized that, for whatever reason, that was the prime reason for me looking forward to Tekken 6. I had so much fun with the customization in Tekken 5 that I'm anxiously expecting even more customization in Tekken 6.
A few years ago, I picked up another fighter simply for the character creation system. This was Mortal Kombat Armageddon. The actual fighting system stunk and so did the method of unlocking new pieces and moves, but I had a lot of fun with the character creator, probably more than I did with the rest of the game.
This also makes me think of games like Oblivion, where I could spend over half an hour in the prison perfecting my character's appearanc and making them look just the way I wanted.
Nowadays, I find that if a game does not come with any sort of customizable feature (character creator, level editor, or simply changing a character's outfits and hair), I'm not as receptive towards it. i am not sure when this happened, but I just feel let down if I'm not able to control an aspect of the game's presentation or gameplay. I have trouble playing old games which offer little customization and are very linear. This might be why Ogre Battle on the SNES is my favourite game of all time, it's never the same game twice in terms of what's in your army.
The Spore Creature Creator is really sucking me in because of this. It gives you so much control over what your creature and you can literally make almost anything you can imagine, even ripping off other games with impressive results (I'm still kind fond of the Ochu I made).
I'm only looking forward to three games at the moment.
Tekken 6, which has excellent character customization, allowing you to give the fighters all new looks.
Street Fighter 4, which does not appear to have much in terms of customization yet apart from alternate costumes. Still, it's Street Fighter so to hell with customization. It'll be a solid fighter regardless.
And third is Spore.. Probably the most customizable game ever without the use of mods. Spore is a game I must have, as it simply looks like it will be so much fun.
How do you guys feel about customization? Are you like me, feeling a little less receptive towards a game if it lacks customization options? Or do you not care and just crave for a solid game that's fun regardless of its options?
Also what games really stood out to you when it came to customization?
