Thought I'd just make a topic for this. The results are just starting to come in. Keep an eye on them here:

Maybe other places, post more stuff if you find it.

How many of you US citizens have voted? I just got back. It didn't take very long.

Caveman - Eat and Run!

You're a caveman and you're running to collect food so you can keep running to collect food, and because you're hungry!

Eat items to regain some stamina, but pick up item combos to get a great boost of energy. Watch out for dangerous, prehistoric wildlife! They can drain your energy and inflict you with nasty conditions!

Download it here: http://www.gamejolt.com/freeware/games/arcade/caveman/9690/

I can provide source code to anybody that wants to see it. It's not great, but could be intersting. Built with XNA 4.0.

So first off, I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, I'm not intending to create a circlejerk topic here I just want to try and get some opinions.

Second, I don't mean for this to sound as "attacky" as it probably does.

So, I want to say right off the bat that the way I see it, your "political" ideology is made up of a few parts, essentially your belief in an economic/fiscal system, and a social one. I think most things can be fit into these two categories. In order to simplify things (I know this is a sliding scale, but just for the sake of this argument), let's say you can be "liberal" or "conservative" in each of these categories (also "progressive" as a synonym of "liberal").

Personally I'd consider myself liberal in both aspects. However I understand fiscal conservatism, I think economic matters come down to ideology that can't really be proven one way or the other. It's possible to have a successful society that is very fiscally conservative (disregard how unpleasant that society might be). At the very least, I understand the point of view and I just think it's sort of insoluble. It's a problem that essentially requires compromise. Not a big deal.

But in terms of social conservatism, I don't see how this is viable. Never in the history of mankind has a socially conservative society managed to stand the test of time. Progressive societies have also fallen, but not for reasons relating to their liberalism necessarily.

It just seems to me that history has proven time and time again that society evolves, and things considered unspeakable to one generation can be commonplace for the next. It doesn't make sense to me to try and prevent progression. A society whose values stagnate forever will never progress, can't survive, and doesn't make sense. In fact regardless of what you think our "purpose" as humans is, regardless of what you think our "ultimate goal" should be as a society, being socially conservative never makes sense. It's always born of fear and being uncomfortable, and the desire to just ignore that stuff instead of learning to deal with it. It's obvious nowadays when you have something like gay marriage, which is identical in every aspect to interracial marriage (I mean, in terms of why people are against it and whatnot), and you'd have to be a fool to think it'll never be legalized.

I don't want to ramble too much. Maybe I'm an idiot and I'm just not looking at things correctly. Maybe I don't know about societies that were very socially conservative but yet somehow lasted a great deal of time. I don't know! Again I'm not try to just attack conservatives or anything, I'm just curious if there is any validity to social conservatism at all. To me, it always seems like it doesn't make sense and could never work long-term.

What are your thoughts? Have you got any examples or ideas of how a society can be socially conservative and successful?

Hey everyone, I know I'm late to the party and all that but I think I'm gonna get a PS3 here when I get my tax refund. We have a 360 in the house, so its kinda nice to round out the collection and open both libraries. The one and only reason I'm really getting a PS3 is for The Last Guardian, and they are also re-releasing Ico and Shadow for the PS3 as well. As stupid as it may sound those 3 games are honestly worth the ps3 to me. Basically my point is that I'm definitely getting a ps3, probably in a week or less.

So, I haven't really been in the loop as far as ps3 games though, so I was wondering if you have a few suggestions for really breakthrough, shining games on the ps3. I have Uncharted 2 on my list of "definitely". I think i'm also going to pick up FFXIII because I like the style, and I really enjoyed XII so I'm just hoping there's a good big-boy story and great voice acting again. If you've play 13 and there is a shitty story and/or crappy voice acting I might skip it, but I can get it for like 20 bucks so, it's reasonable.

I was also thinking of getting the Prince of Persia game, not the Forgotten Sands crapfest but the other one. Any reasons why I totally shouldn't?

Any other recommendations for great games that I haven't heard about?

Hey guys, so my roommate and I started playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, and we're in love with it right now, but the DLC for the extra characters isn't on XBL anymore. We fuckin saw it when it was still up, and we had played UA1 and we did like it, and we were planning on getting 2 but never downloaded that shit, and now we're hella playing this and it would be cool to get them, so I'm wondering is there any way for me to get them? I don't think it's even possible for me to "pay" for them, even though I would and I have the points for it. Is is possible to copy something from another hard drive or something?

I have an account on the official forums but i have to wait 48 to make a topic there, so I'm asking you guys first if you've ever done this or know of a way somehow.

So has anyone heard of/played Bloodline Champions? It's in a beta right now (I have some invites so if you want one post it here). I got a key because I think I played Age of Conan (although I only played the free beta), but anyway it's a pretty solid game, like I said basically DotA without the items or meta-game, just straight up heroes vs. heroes. Each "Bloodline" (class) has fixed skills that do not level up, and there are 4 archetypes (melee dps, ranged dps, healer and tank).

At first it seems like a simple or dumbed down version of the other games, but it actually feels streamlined and more to-the-point. There isn't as much of a learning curve, but each class does have enough uniqueness to offer some good tactics and combos, and certain classes will synergize really well. The game is really fun, and they basically just got rid of all RNG-type stuff and randomness. They leveled the playing field and its entirely about skill. You don't need to know all the weird items or complicated laning and shit. I dunno, it's really fun. Anybody playing it?

Quote from: their site
Bloodline Champions is a PVP game with short, intense matches for up to ten players divided into two teams. Every player plays one of several different bloodlines with 7 unique abilities each.

Different bloodlines in a set up complement eachother, different maps and gamemodes need different tactics, so good teamwork is a must for success.

Chance is not a factor, spells and abilities do a set amount of damage. Random elements such as critical hits and passive abilities do not exist.

Spells travel to where the player aims and can be avoided by enemy players, making every ability dependant on individual player skill.

Without mana and creeps, the game has almost zero downtime and is instead based on short cooldowns, this coupled with no grind or farming ensures that every match is full of action.

So I started watching this show, Modern Family. It's very much like a spiritual successor to Arrested Development, sort of like if AD and The Office had a baby. It has excellent writing, and is just all around hilarious. It's on ABC on Wednesdays, not sure of the time, but they have some eps and clips on Hulu and youtube obviously. Please check it out because it's a great show. Let's talk about it!

Definitely one of my favorite things so far is the song Dylan made. It's great. That whole scene where he's performing it, and the next day when everyone's got it stuck in their heads. It's a great song.

So most people know my favorite band is Portugal. The Man. I linked that song in the what you listening to topic. Their newest album American Ghetto is like really soul-y. Someone in a review said neo-soul. I don't know much about either of these, but I really dig this album so can anyone give any recs of anything similar from any time period, or maybe some classic soul stuff or whatever, just stuff that's really groovy, i'll link some of the Portugal songs to give an idea of what exactly I'm talking about. Any help is grand!!

So hey are there any like hip-hop or rap instrumentalists, or some kind of album that's like rap beats without lyrics or whatever?

The only real artist I know is alias from anticon. I love his shit, but it doesn't need to be like alias I suppose. And I don't mean trip-hop or stuff like DJ Shadow or anything. Really just like hip-hip or rap beats, not necessarily famous ones but like does DJ MANNY or whoever that one guy who does like every hip hop beat ever has like albums of his own without lyrics over it?

pls halp ;)

master baiter
im the instigator
my legion of doom
sweeps your land
like a broom
hold on to your hats
while we spray you with our gats

takin shit over
like a fuckin bulldozer
i advise you retreat
with all of your fleet
stand on your feet
embrace this beat
but dont fall off your potty seat

hop in my ride
c-tree we checkin out low tide
here's comes jekyll and hide
on the wayward side
i sighed at your pride
and laughed at your stride
bitch under your feet
i made that continental divide

yo time for our tea break
don't forsake my crumb cake
take this shit climbtree
it's time for my smoke break

I just read this really fascinating article: http://neuronarrative.wordpress.com/2009/09/22/if-you-want-to-catch-a-liar-make-him-draw/

I think this is really fascinating and can actually probably work really well. What do you guys think? Hope this isn't a waste of a topic but it is pretty interesting!

so i saw this promo on gog today: http://www.gog.com/en/page/ubiaction_promo/

PoP1 is awesome, and even though I already have it on ps2 it's not like a horrible thing to have on the PC. Anyways, I've heard lots of really good things about BGE. Basically my question is twofold:

1) have you played it? if so, is it good? would you recommend it as a game you should definitely play?

2) should I get it used on ps2? I'm sure it'd be basically the same price (probably 10-15 bucks at gamestop)

I'm probably going to get this for sure regardless of whether you think its good or not, and i'll probably get it on the ps2, but if theres any overwhelming reasons to get it with the gog special for PC then i'll perhaps do that. I think i'd rather play it on ps2 though.

Dung - The Dungeon Generator
Collect the treasure and escape the dungeon, if you can!

So here's a thing I did in Python using pygame. The core is a random dungeon generator, which at this point is very simple, but that is the piece I actually set out to write, and the "game" I built around it is really only there so there's something to DO with the dungeon. I find it briefly yet strangely enthralling.

This is my first test using py2exe, and it was a bitch to finally get working, but it will run on my computer. Hopefully it will work for you, but if it doesn't let me know so I can fiddle until it finally gets right. I had to include a bunch of DLLs for pygame, which together is only 1mb, but I also had to include all my resources. I can't get the damn thing to compile it ALL into the EXE. If anybody knows, help me out.

So anyways, I was just hoping you could maybe play it for a bit, and assuming it works check out the random dungeons. It's not very random at this point, and you may be able to see what I'm doing, but I plan on improving it, hopefully with some input.

If anybody is interested in my methods or wants to see source code, let me know. I'm not trying to keep it secret.

Download Link
Direct Mirror - Thanks Tomato!
Download Source - requires Python 2.6 and pygame

download size: 6.5mb

sorry its the only place i know to upload stuff. I can upload it anywhere if you want me to.

a) if you were born/grew up in a large/famous city then it doesn't count! feel free to post it obviously, and you can talk about it and stuff. But large famous cities are boring.
b) "hometown" can be defined as either the town you were born, the town where you grew up, the town where you spent MOST of your time growing up, the town you grew up in that you liked the most, or any combination thereof!

Ok so i was born in Chico California, in north cali. It's not super famous, but at least everyone in california knows of it. It's home of the "party college" Chico State University. I love this town so much, they have the best trees and there are squirrels everywhere and the roads are all old and shit. The place is beautiful and has one of those awesome STONER vibes because its in humboldt county, home of "humboldt county bud" or whatever which is just what they call really good weed from humboldt county (which probably comes from canada but w/e).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chico,_California

I grew up in Manteca California, which is in the central valley, about an hour east of frisco/bay area, and 3 hours or so south of Chico. Manteca pretty much sucks and its a total tweaker town now which sucks big time. Our claim to fame was the WATERSLIDES which were actually pretty cool but they closed down a while ago.

My grandma's long-time friend owned some land, a few acres, which we lived on for a long time. It was pretty sweet, there were like 4 houses (my grandma's friend, my grandma, my aunt and a family friend of my grandma's friend). Anyways, my grandma's friends' husband (Frank) owned the land and he loved it so much. He had cows, and an auto shop on the premises. It was a really sweet place to be looking back on it! we were across the street from an orchard and surrounded by other farms so it was pretty DESERTED. anyways pressure from frank's wife made him sell the land to the city or whatever for multiple millions of dollars, and now there's a giant shopping center on it :(

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manteca,_California

So what about your home town?

Hey everyone. I haven't done any web design work in a while so I started messing with something for the saltworld domain I bought.

Take a look at it here: http://www.saltworld.net and let me know what you think!

The design is mostly based off of this color scheme:

Recent breakthroughs in scramjet engines could mean two-hour flights from New York to Tokyo. They could also mean missiles capable of striking any continent in a moment's notice. No wonder the race to develop them is as fierce as ever.

Wow, so I've been engrossed in this article: http://www.popsci.com/popsci/aviationspace/a3bfe2e6fb5c6110vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html for the past hour or so.

First of all, I had no idea these scramjet engines even existed! This is so cool, they've gotten one up to mach 9.6 with only 10 seconds of scramjet power. That is fucking INSANE. This isn't even a theory, they are testing these right now. It is some amazing stuff, imo. I just found the article really fascinating.

Also, what do you guys think of this as far as weapons go? With this technology, it's possible to demolish a country before they even have a chance to fire anything back, meaning the whole "you shoot we all die" thing kinda won't work anymore? I dunno with great power comes great responsibility and this seems like a great fucking power imo. you go science!
