Hey guys, Esh here. One of the launch titles for the PS4 in Europe was a rarely heard about SNES title revamped with a HD remake. Things got slightly weird when the press release and trailer advertised it with reviews of the Amiga version, showing that it got scores between 90% and 94% back in 1994 land, and actually showed magazine scans of the reviews. But you know, the Amiga version didn't actually exist and all. Things got weirder with a review from one of the top British newspapers The Daily Mail claiming Putty, an emotionless blue blob as one of the most loved heroes of all time and that it was one of the best games of it's time.

Yeah. This is totally just a "hey check out this video I finished today". Some links about the weirdness too, check out Citizen Cube's analysis too for some fun.

Hello there my ol' chums, we did this what, two years ago? It's time to follow up the World Cup with the good stuff, the Premier League Fantasy Football.

It's time to sign up, carefully devise your football teams (mine is stunning this year) and enter the GW Gentleman's Club (aka League but I ran out of characters).

You'll need to register over at the Premier League website, fill out a team (knowing that you can change your team before August 14) and then head over to the Leagues section and type in this little code:

GW Gentlemen's Club
Code to join this league: 629426-157216

Exciting times ahead.

I got a new laptop yesterday with the completely confusing Windows 7, but this little shield keeps popping up in random places, and seems to be preventing me from installing BitTorrent. I click the button and nothing happens. This shield must be made of pure evil. Any idea on getting past this?

Random thing to bring up so early, but this year seems fun, what with Heath Ledger and his possible post-humous nomination/award, but with other genuinely good performances coming out this seems to be a tight one.

And even then, the Best Picture award is blown open, there's nothing that seems to be a genuine winner, it could go any way.

So yeah, this is for the people sad enough to actually predict stuff at such an early time. I'll get some form of list/prediction thing up in a bit.

But you know for Heath Ledger, being one of the incredibly few people who haven't actually seen The Dark Knight, isn't he only in the film for around 30 minutes or so?

A topic title that could only be expressed through caps. Expect a post from a suprised S4D, and then a disappointed S4D as soon as he realises there arn't any anime girls. So yeah, head spinning, potentially hilariously amazing, or just amazing. Ridley Scott. But then, you know, it could always be terrible. But at first read the WENN article:

Quote from: WENN
Director Ridley Scott will helm the bizarre big screen adaptation of popular boardgame Monopoly.

The Gladiator moviemaker has been signed by studio giant Universal to bring the long-running game to life.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ridley will give the Monopoly movie a futuristic edge akin to his 1982 epic Blade Runner.

Corpse Bride screenwriter Pamela Pettler has also been drafted in to create a storyline for the film.

The unlikely subject matter is just one in a line of Hasbro games to get big screen makeovers as part of an exclusive pairing with Universal Studios.

Transformers filmmaker Michael Bay is producing a Ouija Board feature, while a film version of beloved classic Battleship is also in development.

Quote from: Hollywood Reporter
The Hasbro-Universal collaboration "Monopoly" is jumping a large number of spaces up the board.

The feature project has brought on Pamela Pettler to write the screenplay; She penned Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride," Gil Kenan's "Monster House" and the upcoming animated adventure "9," produced by Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.

And Ridley Scott, who has been attached as a producer on "Monopoly" and has been mentioned as a possible director, is now officially attached to helm the project, with an eye toward giving it a futuristic sheen along the lines of his iconic "Blade Runner."

In addition to Scott, Giannina Facio and Hasbro's Brian Goldner are also producing the movie, which will shape a narrative out of the iconic real-estate game. Lawrence Grey will oversee for Universal and Bennett Schneir will oversee for Hasbro.

"Monopoly" marks the latest Hasbro property to look to pass go and head to the big screen. Board games and branded properties have become more attractive as studios look to mitigate risk by finding built-in audiences.

Universal is working with Hasbro on several projects as part of a long-term development deal. Platinum Dunes is producing its feature adaptation of "Ouija Board," while the maritime classic "Battleship" is also in development. Elsewhere at Hasbro, Paramount this summer is set to release Stephen Sommers' feature based on its "G.I. Joe" character. And "Trivial Pursuit: America Plays" is now airing as a syndicated television program.

Hasbro, Scott and Pettler are all repped by WMA
If you missed that too, Bay producing an Ouija board film, not so adventurous but expect explosions, perhaps some car chases...

You know for a while there was that idea that this was going to happen. Maybe with Penn, maybe with Oldman, Depp or Cage. The idea wasn't working out then.

Cue new idea which will probably go through.

Hollywood legend Paul Newman has died of cancer at the age of 83, his spokesman has confirmed.[/size]

Quote from: bbc.co.uk
The blue-eyed star of films like Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid had died at home on Friday surrounded by family and close friends, said Jeff Sanderson.

Newman was nominated for an Oscar 10 times, winning the best actor trophy in 1987 for The Color Of Money.

In May 2007, he said he was giving up acting because he could no longer perform to the best of his ability.

"I'm not able to work any more... at the level that I would want to," he told US broadcaster ABC.

"You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention.

"So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me."

Earlier this year, he pulled out of directing a stage production of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men in Connecticut because of unspecified health problems.

Broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson, who interviewed Newman for a documentary, said the star had been "a real giant of the cinema".

"He was the link between the great time of Hollywood, the Cary Grant and people like that, and Tom Cruise," he told BBC News.

"He fills the gap between the two, and fills it in a most extraordinary, dominant manner."

Hit films

Although his handsome looks and piercing blue eyes made him an ideal romantic lead, Newman often played rebels, tough guys and losers.

"I was always a character actor," he once said. "I just looked like Little Red Riding Hood."

He appeared in some 60 movies, including Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, The Hustler, The Sting and Hud.

Along the way, he worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood - including Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese, Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall and Tom Hanks.

He also appeared with his wife, Joanne Woodward, in several films including Long Hot Summer and Paris Blues. The star later directed his wife in movies such as Rachel, Rachel and The Glass Menagerie.

But his most famous screen partner was undoubtedly Robert Redford, his sidekick in both Butch Cassidy and The Sting.

In addition to his Academy Award for best actor, he was given an honorary Oscar in 1986 "in recognition of his many and memorable compelling screen performances and for his personal integrity and dedication to his craft".

In 1994, he won a third Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for his charitable work.

His philanthropic efforts included the establishment of summer camps for children who suffered from life-threatening illnesses.

He also donated profits from his Newman's Own food range to a number of charitable organisations.

Newman's last film role was as the voice of Doc Hudson, one of the most famous racing cars in history, in the Pixar animation Cars.

It was perhaps a fitting epitaph for the actor, who had a lifelong fascination with the sport - and put his film career on hold in the 1970s to become a professional racing driver.

He is survived by his wife, five children, two grandsons and his older brother Arthur.

GW Olympic Speedrun
Between the previous update and this one, the second GW Olympic Speedrun Event has taken place and finished. In an attempt to be slightly more obscure than the previous event, Adventure Island was chosen, using the opening level for the run. The competition was heated from the opening day, receiving 29 entries throughout the time limit. After a few twists and turns, the Gold medal was taken again by Dada, who won the previous event. Only just missing out was DeadPhoenix who claimed his second Silver medal, while Goat managed to take the Bronze medal away from Mr. L.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Tournament
The tournament is in full heat now, and several fighters have been knocked down into the Loser bracket. HL, host of the tournament fought through two opponents, safely defeating Feldschlacht IV but being destroyed by Speedrun Event Bronze medallist Harland. Harland went on to defeat Esh to fight the winner of the match between Bisse and Roogle.

Roogle started his campaign with a 2 – 0 victory over goat, while Bisse, Man-O-War, Grunthor and LordTyphoon all proceeded through to the next round of the Winners bracket through technical faults and missing opponents.

GW Olympic Trackmania Event
The Trackmania event, a time-attack racing game on Steam was held and decided today. Five competitors took part in a series of races which ended with Gold going to Great Britain’s crumply, Silver awarded to Australia’s Carius and a Bronze going to another Brit, Sarevok.

That's all for now.

I've finally decided to go ahead with a second speedrun event. I decided to hunt down a NES title that was obscure, seemed fun and would be a decent speedrun with some challenge. The rules and regulations will be the same as the previous round which gave the Netherlands their first Gold medal of the games, and so is submitting your game.

The game? Adventure Island. We'll be speedrunning the opening level. It's fairly straight forward, but pretty challenging to do it fast. You'll have to run, skateboard and jump your way to the end of the level.

Get practising, and we're ready to take your submissions over the next week. As soon as we get the submission and authenticate it, your score will be entered into the very sexy scoreboard. Obviously the top three scores at the end of the deadline (which is yet to be set) will win either a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal for their country. So make sure you give your nationality when submitting.

What we're going to do is make a speedrun recording with an emulator.1  What we need in order to do this is a special emulator and a ROM file.  Every participant must get exactly the same.

Since the chosen game is Adventure Island, we'll need a NES emulator that allows for recordings to be made.  Go get it here (version 2.0.2).  The source code is available here, in case you're not on Windows and want to take a shot at compiling it (PM me if you need help).

The ROM we will be using is Adventure Island Classic (E) [!].nes.  No other version will do.

Since it's the opening level, there's no need to use a savestate for this game.

Here's what you should do in order to record an attempt:

  • First open the ROM.
  • When you're ready, you should go into the menu and choose (File -> Record Movie...).  Don't bother typing in the author information or changing the name of the recording, but make sure you choose "Now" in the "Record From" field.
  • Your movement is now being recorded! You should see a red dot in the bottom-right corner of the screen to indicate that you're recording.
  • Now play through the level and choose File -> Stop Movie when you're done (or when you want to try again).
When everything is done, you should have several FM2 files.  These are the actual movies.  Make sure you create a backup of the one you want to send in! Clearly name it (e.g.  gw_speedrun_adv_dada.fcm or something like that) and then e-mail or PM it to Esh.  You'll then be added to the big scoreboard up there. You're aiming for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for this category. Even if you don't get Gold, don't worry, keep trying to the Silver or Bronze. You can submit more than one run, so don't fret if it isn't perfect first time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Are you sure this FM2 is the actual recording file? It's only about 16 KB!
Yes, FM2 files are the recordings.  The reason why they're so small is because they don't actually contain any video data, they really just contain a log of all the keys that you pressed during the recording (and a save state, in our case).  That's also why everybody needs to have the EXACT same ROM file.  Since only all key presses are logged, correct replay of the movie is at the mercy of the emulated internal state of the machine, which will undoubtedly be slightly different when using a different ROM.  That's why you can only use the ROM that has the exact name as described above.

  • I can't find the ROM.
Go on IRC and bug me for it (Esh).

  • What about cheating? Is it possible?
Yes, it's possible to cheat by slowing down the emulator or using save states.  The emulator was made for "tool-assisted" speedrunning and thus has those capabilities.  We expect that nobody will actually do this, but if it does happen we'll likely be able to tell.  It's possible for one to erase his tracks, but that's difficult.  Short answer: don't worry about it too much.
1: Normally, people simply record their play via VHS tape, but that's only necessary if you want to break an "official" record, so we won't go through the trouble.

Make sure to ask any questions if in doubt of anything.

GW Olympic Speedrun
That's right, the GW Olympic Speedrun Event has finished, with an expected Gold for the Netherlands and Dada, who was the favourite from even before the start of the event and managed to set a hefty time that the rest of the competition couldn't catch. But this event was more focused on the Silver and Bronze spots, where Ireland's Harland was knocked from his Silver medal position as the event closed by DeadPhoenix who is representing the United States of America. Even worse luck for Omcifer, who was nudged out of the medal positions and failed to pick up anything. DeadPhoenix was last in the event until the dying seconds of the event.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Tournament
Since the last update, the tournament has been through registration and has started. The tournament is a Double Elimination bracket, which means if you lose a match-up, you still have another chance on the Loser Bracket, and eventually come back for the Final. Some fights have already taken place, Chef knocked DeadPhoenix, the silver medalist in the Speedrun, into the Loser Bracket, while Esh defeated UPRC. Like DeadPhoenix, Dada and Harland are in this tournament, but are yet to fight. The competition is beginning to heat up, so watch out.

GW Olympics - COD4 (PC) Singles[/size]

Okay, so things with the GW Olympics have been sluggish at best. We've got one event finished (the speedrun event), the SFA3 tournament is just about to begin and the Olympic Mapping event has been postponed. So to speed things up a bit, here's the COD4 PC tournament.

It'll work in a 1v1 Knockout tournament, though since I'm not in the know with COD4 on the PC.

So post here if you're interested in this event, and let's sort out some kind of rules or map choices etc.

Also, if you're interested in taking part, let us know your nationality as the usual with these events. coo'.

PS: Don't fret, a 360 event hasn't been ignored.

GW Olympics 23/08/08 Update[/size]

  • The Olympic Mapping Event has finally opened and is ready for you to begin working on your maps. As mentioned in the topic, there'll be three rounds over the next three weeks. It's a tough call, expect tears and blood, but at the end of it there'll be three GW Olympic champions. Check out the topic here.

  • The Speedrun Event, which was voted as the Heatman level from Megaman 2, is currently being lead by Lazrael with a run of 1:56:52. He made a few mistakes (including going the wrong way at one point) so don't be discouraged, his score is beatable (ho ho ho laz). Get over to the topic and submit your score now.

  • Only a small update for the Netplay Fighting Event, the chosen game has been decided as Street Fighter Alpha 3. Keep a look out for the topic appearing sometime soon in the VG forum.

  • Through the talk of the GW Olympics, two more possible events have popped up, including Tetris and Toribash. It's looking more and more likely that a Tetris event will make it's entrance to the GW Olympic Games, and a Toribash event is also very possible. Let your opinion be heard over at the GW Olympics thread.

GW Olympics 15/08/08 Update[/size]

  • So the GW Olympics was announced over in the General forum, with a list of possible activities. Over the next few weeks, these events will be popping up around the Videogame forum, so make sure you sign up when they arrive.
  • The Netplay Tournament Event has a topic open over in the VG forum deciding which game the event will be taking place in. So far Street Fighter Alpha 3 is in the lead, though closely followed by Street Fighter III: Third Strike. Also in the poll are Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

  • Details of the Team Fortress 2 Teams Event have been leaked, the event will most likely be in teams of 5 or 6 competitors in some Capture the Flag matches.

  • The Speedrun Event is deciding which game and level the event will take place on. Have your say now.

Okay! The poll was ran and it seems people decided on choosing the Heatman Stage from Megaman 2.

The following is entirely down to Dada, who's been the helping out a huge amount with this event (I have no idea when it comes to speedrunning and the rules and such, so I owe alot to him).

What we're going to do is make a speedrun recording with an emulator.1  What we need in order to do this is a special emulator and a ROM file.  Every participant must get exactly the same.

Since the chosen game is Mega Man 2, we'll need a NES emulator that allows for recordings to be made.  Go get it here (version 2.0.2).  The source code is available here, in case you're not on Windows and want to take a shot at compiling it (PM me if you need help).

The ROM we will be using is Mega Man 2 (U).nes.  No other version will do.  Keep in mind that we'll be playing on easy difficulty.

When I suggested this game, I also said that it would be best if we could play Heat Man's level with the weapons that you'd normally have when making a speedrun of the game.  That's why I've made a save state that brings you to the main menu after you've beaten Air Man, Quick Man, Flash Man, Metal Man and Bubble Man.  Download it here.  Put it in the directory where you installed the emulator (e.g.  C:\fceux-2.0.2.win32).

Here's what you should do in order to record an attempt:

  • First open the ROM.
  • Then load the save state that you've downloaded before (File -> Load State From...).  You'll begin playing the level after watching the boss animation.
  • Immediately after loading the state, you should go into the menu and choose (File -> Record Movie...).
Clearly name it (e.g.  gw_speedrun_mm2_dada.fcm or something like that) and then e-mail or PM it to Esh.  Also, please don't post about how you did, as you might discourage others from making an attempt.

Go on IRC and bug me for it (Dada).

What the heck?
Okay, so inspired by the Beijing Olympics which are currently on the rage on the other side of the world, myself and others have come up with some crazy idea to create our own GW Olympics, where the contestants will represent their countries in different events, in an attempt to win the most medals for their country.

This is basically an interest topic to see how many people would want to take part in the different events. You'll be able to take part in as many events as you want, and here are the list of events currently in planning:

Soldat 2v2 Capture the Flag Event
Similar to the old school Soldat tournaments that have taken place in the past, we will be taking teams of two of any nationality to compete in a knock out tournament to win the three medals on offer. The teams will be randomised and put into a bracket, and the teams will battle it out on several different stages until there is are gold, silver and bronze medalists at the finals.

Speedrun Single Level Event
The level will be chosen by a poll and suggestions are open for the single level challenges. When the event begins and the level announced, competitors will be able to send in their medal attempts and be entered onto the leaderboard. But are you fast enough to win a medal?

Netplay Tournament Event
The game hasn't been chosen yet, but get ready for some knock-out tournament event action. Pick your fighter and get training, a medal for your country awaits.

Team Fortress 2 Team Event
Team Fortress 2 was a must for the Olympics, so expect some team battles. Noone is sure what the rules or regulations for this is yet, but they'll eventually be released.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament Event
Battle your way to a medal in this SSBB tournament, hopefully it'll be the biggest yet, since the last SSBB tournament that actually happened was before the European version was released. This could be interesting.

Some more, possibly smaller events for your consideration:

Call of Duty 4 Singles Tournament Event
Think you can fair up against others in singles combat? Depending on numbers, this could happen on the 360 or PC version. We'll see how many people are interested first.

Chess Tournament Event
Chess! Because we couldn't forget Chess. How much of an increase to your ego would it be if you were GW Olympic Gold Medalist in Chess. The ladies would be tailing you.

Halo 3 Event
Halo 3 Event, not sure what mode or if we'll be put into teams but get ready for some needler action (i have no idea what that is).

WC3 Event
WC3 is still played around GW in some corner of IRC, so a tournament was needed.

Olympic G&D Mapping Event
Can you become an Olympic G&D Mapping Gold Medalist? Damn right you can.

So let us know if you're interested in taking part in any of these activities. We'll properly take registrations for the events soon since this is just an interest topic.

Terrible topic I know, but I was wondering.

How many people play COD4 these days, and on which system?

I'm assuming most people are on the 360 version?

What th-

Quote
Actor and comedian Bernie Mac has died at the age of 50.

The star was best known in the UK for film roles in Ocean's Eleven, Charlie's Angels and Transformers.

But in the US, he achieved critical and popular acclaim for the long-running sitcom The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him two Emmy award nominations.

He was admitted to hospital in Chicago last week and died early on Saturday morning due to complications arising from pneumonia, his publicist said.

Damica Taylor said no other details were available and asked that his family's privacy be respected.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs.

However, he said the condition went into remission in 2005.

Mac is survived by his wife Rhonda, daughter Je'Niece and a granddaughter.

Clearly spent far too long watching the Olympics, this is some pretty serious news. RIP Bernie Mac.

Demos

Discarded Online

Discarded Online is an browser based multiplayer game created by a small group

of game creators, including Doppleganger who is the sole artist for the project.

Featuring some sleek graphics and some entertaining gameplay. This is worth

a tryout.

target="_blank">Visions of Utopia

An early demo of your usual old-school RPG, this time packaged by Hoyle00cdn.

Magic is faded and swordplay is at it's peak, the story begins with a villain out

for revenge for his father, and plots to unlock the power of magic to do so.

target="_blank">Steve

An Action Comedy game being created by TTsmasher that boasts an awesome

intro, rad cutscenes and a gnarly voiceover. There's no plot at the moment, but

the demo does feature a calm and relaxing walk. Oh, and there's a character

called Steve.

target="_blank">Sonic Party II

Sonic Party II has nothing to do with GW itself, but it's worth the look anyway.

The game is a Sonic version of the Mario game of the same name.

The content is blistering, but alas it's a German production being ran by a

man called Simon.

target="_blank">Everlasting Journey

Everlasting Journey is a game currently in development by PepsiOtaku, who

has been working on the RPG for the last year. You play a character called

Sparrow who is drawn into travelling around the world by a mysterious girl,

only to meet a threateningly named nemesis called PAUL. (..Paul?)

target="_blank">Eve: Reverse

Eve: Reverse is spin-off of an unreleased game (Eve) both created by

The Illusionist. In the spin-off, you play a girl named Alicia, after the second

half of a locket given to her by a dying traveller. Thus she is adventuring

through caves, tombs and other 'spooky' locations. The game is gathering

attention, so take a look.

So I've been working on this for the last three weeks or so, it's a film in the style of John Woo, including the dodgy dub.
