Soooooooooooo.

I am trying to see if anyone knows any good ISPs on the (Mid)East Coast that aren't completely fucked monopolies and stuff. In today's society, it's pretty damn hard to find, but we're looking to find a new one.

We're currently with Verizon DSL (I live in Norfolk, VA) and they've been having shitty service. The internet just gets slower and slower as time goes on, and disconnects etc. We're supposed to be on a plan that is 3 Mbps, but speed tests have given us under 1 Mbps. After calling Tech Support many times, they claimed we were only supposed to get 1.5 Mbps and other such business. We went over the other problems we have (touching the phone disconnects the internet, etc. But it's not like it should do that). And they didn't really do anything.

Then we decided to go try Cox Cable. We'd had them many years ago and they gave us problems but we decided to try again. They guaranteed 20 Mbps minimum in writing, with that not being possible all the time of course but we figured hey. Well, when finalizing the contract on the phone, it hung up on us. Then we tried to contact the Tech support for them (same person we'd talked to about setting it up) and they never answered us for like a week. Today the service was supposed to be set up but they told us that we didn't have an account set up, and they gave us the run-around. Finally the person we spoke to before claimed "Oh. I've been gone, sorry." And ultimately we just decided to fuck it and cancel it.

So we're at a standstill, currently still having Verizon DSL but they suck. So we don't know want to do (me and my family and I, btw, is "we"). So we live in Hampton Roads area of Virginia...

1) We need a go ISP for this area... Is there one at all on this earth?

2) Anybody know of one out by Virginia Tech? I'll be heading back for my second year, to an apartment, and we still need an ISP there. Comcast is the one typical with the complex but that being considered the "Worst Company in America"... I have my doubts.

Somebody help, throw ideas out... :(

Alright, this is a bizarre question to ask up here on GW (especially since I haven't been here in forever) but there's quite a few bright people here, and I'm getting mixed signals about this.

I'm heading off to college at Virginia Tech in less than two weeks, and I've trying to work out one more thing with my schedule. As far as math goes, right now I have Linear Algebra on my schedule. When I got some help from counselors/whatever about fixing classes I already had credit for, I was told that I could go ahead and take Multivariable Calculus because I have already got the Prereq's for it (I've taken Calculus I and Calculus II in dual enrollment).

However, I was looking at the Computer Engineering curriculum and it lists that Differential Equations is the next math class to take, then Multivariable Calculus comes the semester after it. When I brought this up to the Engineering counselor, she said that it doesn't matter what order I take them in and that I could even take them at the same time...

It's just that I have the Prereq's for Multivariable, while I think Linear Algebra is a Prereq for Differential Equations so I have to finish that class first. Plus, my Calculus II teacher this past year went and took Differential Equations at a college over the past summer so he could prepare us for it, since he said it's the next math class.

So here I am being told that Diff Eqs. is next, while an Engineering advisor at my college is telling me that it doesn't matter.

Does anyone here know exactly if there is a real order to these classes, or whether I should wait or what?

Here is my current schedule, with 13 credit hours right now anyway:

Monday
8:00 - 8:50 AM == Engineering Problem Solving with C++
9:05 - 9:55 AM == Electric Circuit Analysis
3:35 - 4:25 PM == Linear Algebra

Tuesday
9:30 - 10:45 AM == Honors Freshman English
5:00 - 6:15 PM == Electric Circuit Analysis LAB

Wednesday
8:00 - 8:50 AM == Engineering Problem Solving with C++
9:05 - 9:55 AM == Electric Circuit Analysis

Thursday
9:30 - 10:45 AM == Honors Freshman English
5:00 - 6:50 PM == Engineering Problem Solving with C++
7:00 - 9:50 PM == "Free Time" (Supposedly certain planned tests will be taken here??)

Friday
9:05 - 9:55 AM == Electric Circuit Analysis

PLUS some online Digital Systems Transition class or something.

Any advice?

City and Colour Wiki

City and Colour Myspace

Alright, so I literally just learned about this today. Has anyone here heard of a band called Alexisonfire? I've heard of it, never listened to a song of theirs. But, this "band" is called City and Colour, and is the solo side project of the lead singer and guitarist of Alexisonfire, Dallas Green. The name corresponds to his name (City to Dallas, Colour to Green). Furthermore, it is an acoustic "group," where he is accompanied by varying musicians every once in a while.

To avoid babbling on about different things, I just have to say that after I started listening to his singing... I pretty much fell in love with it. This is some good music right here, and I haven't had a chance to listen to THAT much, but it is really well done. I believe he has a really good voice, and if you like acoustic music you should hopefully love this.

Here are a few youtube links to some songs:

The Girl

Waiting...

Sometimes (I Wish)

"Hello, I'm in Delaware"

Check those out and other songs if you like what you hear. Come back and post what you think!

This is somewhat straightforward. I've taken Chemistry in 9th grade, then I took a Dual Enrollment/college level course of it last year in 11th grade. Now, I'm set up to take the Chemistry subject test in 2 weeks from tomorrow.

It was sort of all of the sudden because I didn't see that two of the colleges I want to apply to require a science subject test of either physics or chemistry (I'm currently in dual enrollment physics so I'm stuck doing chem!).

So basically, does anyone have anything I should go look at to review for this subject test. I'm rather bad with chemistry, but it's my only option in this case, so I'm trying to find things to help me out, review, etc. I borrowed out an advanced chemistry book from my teacher from last year, and I've read/taken notes on the first two chapters, but that's just general ideas/concepts I needed to refresh...

But is there anything out there really worth looking into to refresh/learn?

I don't know whether to really post this here but I decided to, like the AP Scores topic usually is here (and I sometimes post that myself!)

Basically, I'm in my Senior Year and I took the SAT twice this year, once back in May, and once in early October. I got my scores back a week ago (I believe) for October and I'm pretty fucking happy:

Math: 660
Reading: 720
Writing: 660
---Essay was 8 out of 12

Math & Reading: 1380
Total: 2040

I'm pretty stoked right now! This is actually a record for my high school, or at least that's what a few teachers think/trying to figure out. I'll be surprised if it is because we've had genius kids at my school, but who knows.

But moreover, the purpose of this topic is for others to post their SAT scores (if they want), talk about prospective colleges, and whatnot. Since that's rather limited, people in college/fresh out of college/whatever can talk about experiences, their SATs, and whatever's relevant.

So yeah!

Click here to see it

I just wanted to post this topic because this a) confirms Bioshock 2 (like anyone wondered if it would happen) and b) is what's released as a teaser for it.

Personally, I have no fucking clue why they did this except to slap you across the face for like 3 minutes and say "HEY WE HAVE BIOSHOCK 2 COMING". There was nothing really standing-out in the video, except maybe that the Little Sister (I'm assuming that's the woman) is grown up, so the game takes place in the 1980s?

Either way, it's most likely a Little Sister grown so it rules out a prequel. Other than that, the video's pretty useless unless someone else can pick up on something out of nowhere!

So, discuss and all that about the useless video!

Okay so I'm not sure, but I think I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. For the past week or so, my left ring finger has been in pain, not EXTREME but somewhat bad whenever it is pressed down on, i.e. typing etc. (to the point where whatever I pressed with it is now being pressed with my middle finger).

Also, my thumb on my right hand has been hurting about the same time length, but it has pretty much gone away (I don't feel anything right now anyway).

But I was looking up symptoms and all that, and I actually stumbled across a test for Carpal Tunnel, the Tinel test? I looked it up and numerous websites talk about it. So I figured it might be worth a shot. It involves tapping the wrist of the pained hand on the median nerve. The test is positive for Carpal Tunnel (or at least it says it is everywhere) if your hand/finger/etc. gets an electric-like shock every time you tap it.

I tested my left hand, sure enough a little jolt through my hand and my left ring finger (the one in pain when pressed). I tested my right hand, no electric-like jolt.

I do a relatively big amount of typing and Guitar Hero and all sorts of things, so I'm actually assuming (and afraid) that I have it, because I want to go into Computer Engineering and I don't want to have hands that can't type/do shit. I haven't gotten it checked out by a doctor because I just tested myself about 20 minutes ago and about 2 minutes ago.

So does anyone have any suggestions, thoughts, ideas, other than just "go see a doctor"? Has/does anyone here have it or have had it? Thanks.

I don't know where else to stick this and I know GW isn't some homework website but it's a last ditch effort since this is due tomorrow (along with other problems).

1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data
Three digital clocks A, B, and C run at different rates and do not have simultaneous readings of zero. Figure 1-6 shows simultaneous readings on pairs of the clocks for four occasions:

___________312_________________512__ Clock A
___25______125_______200_______290__ Clock B
___92________________142____________ Clock C

For example, at the earliest occasion, B reads 25 s and C reads 92 s. If two events are 600 s apart on Clock A, how far apart are they on (A) clock B and (B) clock C? (C) When clock A reads 400 s, what does clock B read? (D) When clock C reads 15 s, what does clock B read? (Assume negative readings for prezero times.)

2. The attempt at a solution
Okay, on the little line chart I made above, any spot where the numbers are right on top/below each other is a point where sumultaneous readings are. At the first event, Clock B is at 25 seconds while Clock C is at 92 seconds, and so on.

Since the chart was somewhat easy to read, I added up the time between 312 and 512 on Clock A, and the time between 125 and 290 on Clock B:

(A) Therefore, for on Clock A there is a space of 200 seconds while Clock B has 165 seconds. For Clock A to go 600 seconds, I multiplied the space by 3, and thus did the same to Clock B's space since they are the simultaneous, thus getting a time of 495 seconds on Clock B. The answer in the book says this is correct.

The problem I have is that I have no absolute clue on what to do or what equations to use, as I obviously cannot use the above method for part B of the question.

I'm in a college-level Physics course in my 12th grade year of High School. I've no real Physics knowledge although I have taken one part of Calculus. We have not been tought much yet but the teacher allows us to call him if we need help. I cannot reach him however and so I'm pretty much stuck.

Is there any direction that someone can at least point me in, because this is already quite confusing? I'm assuming I need some ratios or something but I cannot put it together.

Hopefully there's a physics whiz here!

Live video of them talking about it (exciting!!)

But there's no real articles about it right now. It's still going on right now, and that sucks. I can't think of much to say. Hope no members here are in it (or any family members).

That's a pretty big earthquake...

Okay so, I watched Reno 911! Miami (it was ok...exaggerated humor etc). But anyway, in the credits there was a song, called Police and Thieves. It said it was performed by a band called Sprechen Sie Deutsch (yes I know what that means).

When I looked up "Police and Thieves", I got...The Clash! Of course I listened to that version and it sucked. I just think The Clash has a few select good songs and that's it. Anyhow...

I'm trying to look for the band but of course all I get is "WHAT DOES SPRECHEN SIE DEUTSCH MEAN" and "DO YOU SPEAK DEUTSCH" and even if I add in band and stuff, they don't come up.

Youtube Link -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bzos0EvDtEs

Someone help because I liked that version!

:EDIT:

Well idk now! Apparently it's Dave Grohl (it did sound a lot like him) but fuck Reno for putting a fake band in there. Sorry I guess this topic sucked.

I have a question, is Wikipedia loading for anyone?

It's not loading on either of my computers...so if the whole website's down (i.e. people here can't load) then I guess that's alright.

But if you can get it to load, do you have any ideas how I can fix my problem?

Pretty much everyone should be getting their Advanced Placement exam scores today or sometime this week. I just got mine about 10 minutes ago, so I don't expect everyone to have it like RIGHT now.

But I am kind of relieved.

AP U.S. Government and Politics - 3
AP Eng. Language - 3

I was let down by Government a little because I seriously was expecting a 4. But it's good enough for me, at least I reached some mark instead of getting a 2 and being unqualifed.

So whoever gets theirs, post them here whenever. Discuss and stuff.

I'm actually a little depressed. There a lot less songs that I know and love on this than Rock Band 1.
  • Some lackluster choices for some of the good bands. For example, Let There Be Rock is not a dazzling AC/DC choice. They could've done something better, say Dirty Deeds, Thunderstruck, Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, or something.
  • And to choose PANIC! at the disco, and Linkin' Park, it makes my heart sink. :(

Post thoughts!

Click here to learn about what's allowed in your food!

So apparently this is a "book" full of the level of stuff the Food and Drug Administration allows in the U.S. food supplies. Of course, it says averages of stuff is usually lower, but still...they allow up to the stuff listed here.

For example:

PEANUT BUTTER    Insect filth
                   (AOAC 968.35) Average of 30 or more insect fragments per 100 grams
                   Rodent filth
                   (AOAC 968.35) Average of 1 or more rodent hairs per 100 grams
                   Grit
                   (AOAC 968.35) Gritty taste and water insoluble inorganic residue is more than 25 mg per 100 grams

They allow what is there in peanut butter, saying it is a naturally occurring and impossible to rid all of it. Although it's not saying that all this is in every piece of peanut butter, you should get the point.

So, pretty interesting, and gross!

What do you think? And for people outside of the U.S., do you know of anything like this for your government, etc.?

Okay so I have bad sunburn, really bad. Now, after a couple days the burning kind of let off, and now it's been itching like mad since yesterday. I can't stop it.

Yesterday my mom gave me some "Solarcaine Cool Aloe Burn Relief Gel" and so I tried it. It seemed to work, but later in the day it came back. I put more on then went to bed. Now, it came back again today, so I put it on again. It didn't really go away after putting it on, and a couple of times it seemed to be worse. It's this weird random itching and isn't there all the time.

Anyway, I researched the ingredients: propylene glycol, some sort of alcohol that can be irritable to skin...isopropyl alcohol, similar to before...and diazolidinyl urea, supposedly rated IARC 1 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and as a "probable human carcinogen" by the USA Environmental Protection Agency.

Looking up carcinogen reveals it as an agent of some sort that is involved in the promotion of cancer.

So am I kind of fucked? And what should I do? My mom is dumb and is all "well it's still fine" when I'm really skeptical here.

Any ideas?

So, I don't know how many of you have had AP exams this year, but that doesn't matter. For me, I had the AP U.S. Government one last Monday and I thought most of it was a breeze but I hated a few of the FRQs. Tomorrow, however, I have the AP English Language exam and I don't feel so hot about that one.

Does/did anyone else have any AP exams? Maybe some of you had the same ones as me.

Discuss them here. I doubt we'll get reprimanded by the AP coordinators! :fogetnah:

I have no real clue where this would go on the forum, or if it should anywhere, but I need someone to explain a problem to me. I can't search the internet or look in a book (particularly because it'd be hard to find the problem and also I hate book-explanations). So if someone here can help me quickly...at least if there is someone here who understands Calculus. So...yeah. Being in Calculus (part one) in 11th grade is kind of easy, but this one problem has got me. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong.

I have really no clue where to go on this problem on my quiz review sheet. The problem is:

Find the definite integral from 0 to 1 of:

(x-1)/(x+1)    dx

I feel kind of stupid about the problem, and maybe I'm not looking at it right.

Anyway...uh, yeah...can whoever sees this just leave this here? Hopefully someone here can help me, because I need human explanation.

Quote
NEW YORK - New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who swept to office as a no-nonsense crimebuster known as the “sheriff of Wall Street, apologized to his family and the public Monday after being linked in news reports to a prostitution ring.

“I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family ... [and] my sense of right and wrong,” Spitzer said in a brief statement he read to reporters at his Manhattan office. “I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family.”

Spitzer, with his wife, Silda, looking on, did not specifically refer to reports earlier Monday that he had been discussed on a federal wiretap as having arranged to meet with a prostitute last month in Washington.

Jonathan Dienst, an investigative reporter for NBC affiliate WNBC in New York, and Robert Windrem, an investigative producer for NBC News, reported Monday afternoon that Spitzer was discussed on a Feb. 13 wiretap in which members of the alleged prostitution ring said he had sought the services of a woman named “Kristen.”

What a great guy! Wonder if he'll resign or what.

Zero Punctuation

Does any one here remember Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw? He created those games in AGS: 5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, Trilby's Notes, and one last one I can't seem to remember.

Well apparently he has a review site where he has little videos complete with crazy (and usually funny) drawings that accompany his voice. As it is called "Zero Punctuation", he rambles on consistently without stopping at all and goes extremely fast, but you can usually make out what he says. If not, go back some. (I'm also pretty sure he records segments then sticks them together because there's no way to talk that fast for so long without stopping.)

Anyway, I'd advise you to check it out. He actually has some good reviews and makes really good points in most of them, all while pointing out any flaws and/or making jokes about parts of the game. It's all good fun and I recommend you watch some. The Assassin's Creed particularly hits home for me.

Check it out!

Teaser Trailer

I really don't know what to think about this. I love the first Deus Ex, and I still liked the 2nd one but it wasn't as good as the original.

Now the third...hmm, I don't really know what I can say. Especially since it is a sketchy trailer.

What's everyone think?
