here's what i'd do for the forum selection

SALTWORLD:
  - General - Anything: personal, news, BS, tech, food, advertising of projects, politics, youtubes, travel, weirdos
  - Games+Media - gaming chatz, TV, 'the movies', sparts, sports, Books, PDFs. docs, music
  - Game Design - all in-progress and game design related projects can be talked about
  - Creativity - all creativity in progress, all creativity related discussions
  - Feedback

Rather than having a multitude of separate subforums with one or two active topics (at best), whittle them down so these very active topics remain the hubs that they are but also help provide exposure to a wider selection of more loosely related topics. The less fragmented traffic becomes the more integrated and, hopefully, active discussion will get. I miss topics all the time and I'm sure I would have stuff to say about a wider variety of topics if I saw them all.

Like general might look like

- MEGATOPIC catamites topic pgs 1-171
- MEGATOPIC talk Crud pgs 1-69
- I just moved to NYC
- chinese food pgs. 1-9
- this is a cool youtube account
- MEGATOPIC community project? pgs. 1-31
- SHORT FILM: The Rancid Rodent dir. Me!! pgs 1-3
- SW MUSIC COLLAB COMPLETE - pgs. 1-6
- My computer is fucked up.

Blue's journey looks fun, I say we commemorate the new forum with online co-op Blue's journey.  Since not everyone could play, maybe just two people could play and one of them live streams it or something.

i think you could probably even amalgamate Game Design and Creative together. and i agree with your idea.

i'd remove as much useless clutter as possible from the layout. like if it were up to me posts would just show username, avatar, group. i'd also get rid of the shit at the bottom that links topics to social media sites.

i like having username, avatar, description (if provided), group, postcount, location (if provided). pips are useless because right now everyone has three boring gray ones. but pips are a whole 'nother discussion......

as for social media sharing, i think those icons belong at the top-right of a topic (under "Follow this topic" button, perhaps), not at the bottom. there should only be a couple visible, like for facebook and twitter, and the rest can be accessed with a "see all" button of some sort.

also, we've been discussing forum division on IRC, and i wanted to post my suggestion here-- on the main forum page, i'd like to see...

Discussion:
  • General (Description: "Talk about personal lives, current events, technology, culture, salt... Anything goes.")
  • Media (Description: "Music, games, literature, art, movies, and all other media.")

agreed. i imagine this is already something dada plans to change as he continues working on the layout.

and just as a point of discussion and as a reminder to dada: for user profile options, change the gender selections. (and maybe change the description of "Gender" to "Gender identity" or "I identify as:".) if you want to keep it simple, go with Man/Woman/Other. if you want to show a few more options, you could do Man/Woman/Genderqueer/Agender/Other. and if you want to be very progressive about it, then make it a text input box rather than a drop-down selection!

we might need to ban ironic use of them though, excluding exceptional circumstances

heh i mentioned topic icons on IRC earlier because i want them back as well. does anyone have the old ones saved? aside from the ones we stole from SA (like POLITICS and GUNS), i remember we also had ones that members made specifically for GW. and dicko was saying on IRC how we need to merge the Advertising subforum with the creativity forums, but that we should have some indicator of something being a finished project and not just a creative discussion, and i mentioned that topic icons could serve this purpose. people should post their finished projects (like games, albums, etc) in the Artistry and Game Design forums, and there should be a "Finished Project" topic icon for use in these cases.

regarding the forum order stuff: the only thing i would deem necessary is to get rid of everything in the 'community' category. there hasn't been an announcement in over a year and nobody will ever go there to get the latest news anyway (like technically shouldn't a topic like this be in there?). the advertisement forum has always been stupid throughout the forum's entire history. intro/farewell topics can just go here in general chat. the feedback forum can be moved to the general category. everything else is fine, although again if it were really up to me i would condense everything into as few forums as possible and keep things as simple as possible. like even simpler than jamie's suggestions.

my ideal set of forums would be:

general
media (movies, music, tv, games)
tech/programming
game design
arts
feedback

+the archives and the other secret forums in their own separate categories

i really think totally finished projects should just be posted in whatever the most active forum is. things that are finished are rare enough that it wouldn't be a flood, and you don't want something people didn't know to look for only getting 5 replies because it wasn't even seen.

nah, those are the old ones. sometime in 08 i made a bunch of entirely new ones that looked much better and had a consistent style. it's gotta be somewhere. if we managed to save the fucking rotating pitchwhite head emoticon then we gotta have the post icons saved.

I don't disagree with this, especially in the short term. If there is a main-site being developed which enables users to post finished projects and have them showcased, then having an entirely separate forum for the occasional finished project is just going to turn out as a redundancy at the time the main site is complete.

There could be plans to automatically integrate the finished projects section so that they get submitted to the main site upon posting, which would justify having it it's own separate forum. I don't really know enough about the plans for the main site, so it depends.
