i think the like button would be cool because it means you can say "yes this is good" to someone without having to reply with one line. probably name it something other than "like" though.
 
also: posts with one sentence strips the avatar/signature from the post?

a "mark as read" or "i dont give a shit" button next to topic names in the list so the boards dont keep showing up as unread even though you've read all the topics you want.

Really the best use of like buttons is if someone posts a funny thing and you wanna give it props w/o just replying LOL, it's not that great in full discussions.

that's weird, on the one hand you think people should be able to agree to a post without actually writing a new post, and on the other hand you want to encourage longer posts?

I don't think I'm contradicting myself: I'd prefer there to be fewer, more substantial posts; rather than a greater number of more insignificant posts.

if this place was like a hive of activity then it'd have a point to it, but for a forum with about ten active members it seems a bit kinda, blah.

(gonna take a lil stance i dunno if its devils advocate or not i'm kinda hitting 50-50 myself here) but while it could be a thing of POST QUALITY which yes is kinda a bad thing, it's only local. \the effects of someone having 20+ likes doesn't cast a lasting impression throughout posts in other topics like something such as a KARMA system would, which is the worst kind of bad forum feature. The positive feedback loops in POST LIKES isn't really that much of a problem, and helps at least the poster getting some appreciation for the lil jokes he puts in his posts (which happens such a huge amount on saltworld)
 
so what i'm saying is post likes while probably making a QUALITY metric, doesn't at least cause elitism around specific Members, only specific Posts (which is much less of a problem)
 
YES people shouldn't be striving to get appreciation for lil stupid shits in posts
YES it will most likely INCREASE the frequency of people making joke posts
 
As i said, I just wanted to put an argument across in the aide of balance.

salt world thought: i think the general whats-on-your-mind thread is bad for the forum. it prevents people from making new threads which would be interesting and popular. there's not even use for a random one-liner thread anymore (which is basically what "what's on your mind" was reserved for when it started) because IPB has a status feature, and many of us are regular twitter users too... our activity is low enough that the general thread is just hindering us. i would like to see the general forum moving faster, with new threads being frequent, and from all different users. so many people have interesting ideas, but they just talk about them in IRC or post them in the general thread... let's prevent this from continuing to happen.
