It happened some years ago, around 2004, when Square-Enix sent a letter of Cease&Desist to the creators of Chrono Trigger: Resurrection. For anyone that has lived on a cave, here's the site:

A year ago, Square-Enix sued some companies that sold sword replicas from Final Fantasy. Again, link here:

And just recently, Square-Enix sent yet another C&D letter to the creators of Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes. Basically, it's a ROM hack of CT which was looking great, and was in 5 years of production.

I think many of us lost our faith in SE a long time ago, but I don't get it. I don't know how would I react if I was the CEO of SE, but it sure isn't the way to treat the fans. There are tons of other roms hacks from other games, such as Megaman and Mario, why is it the case that just SE reacts? I can understand the sue over the sword companies, as they were receiving profit, but this?

I don't know. SE has been dead for since a long time ago and this just reconfirms they're the biggest douchebags in gaming but... argh.

:/

Ah.

I see.

It's only accetpable for THEM to rehash their own shit.

Disney is fine too as long as they relinquish control of their character designs to Namura.

And that's it.

Got it.

Why dont they just stop hyping this stuff and just suddenly release it / hype when it's ready. Square enix can whine all they want after that; but once it's on the internet; it'll be almost impossible for them to truly get rid of it, even if the original creators are forced to stop hosting it.

yeah that happened to me too that's why after all my screenshots i didn't make a game

i don't see how this is a dick move. it would've been really cool of them to have encouraged or supported it but there's nothing dickish about exerting ownership like this imo.

I think there is. Whats the worst that could come of it? That some people who might have never heard of or cared to play chrono trigger would have wanted to actually buy and check the original game out because of this? After which gaining them more of a fanbase and income?

fuck square, fuck em' hard

I actually agree, but also realise that yeah, it IS Square-Enix's shit... so if they -did- pump that out without hyping and it got on the net... Wouldn't that get them sued or something?

That was another game of which I can't remember the name. A very cool 3D remake of Chrono Trigger.

only if it's really good, otherwise the characters just get associated with crappy fan games. i can't read 'cloud strife' without cringing.

I don't think they could even be stopped by square. How the hell could the company prevent a group of hobbyists from tinkering with a rom?

I think it would be very difficult for them to win a court case over it (leaving aside the fact the hobbyists don't have an attorney). Technically, they're making a derivative work based on a copyrighted production by Square Enix (that's what will be claimed), but if they're just making a ROM patch there isn't really anything illegal about it. Like konix says, it's just a piece of code that says "add these bytes at this offset". The claim would be stronger if they had made custom graphics by modifying the ones found in the Chrono Trigger ROM, but that would still be an incredibly minor violation.

It's not like anyone's profiting or robbing Square Enix of potential sales, after all.

Then again even the legality of torrent files is being questioned now, so who knows?

hahaha this did not happen, trust me.

In fact, I am almost positive that there have been very very few C&D letters sent to these hobbyists to stop their work. Most of them look for excuses to stop working on their stuff, because they lose interest or finally realize that the work load is too much for them. See Daniel Barras or any other popular video game fan project.

This actually has the letter attached to it though, so it sucks how they had to do this. It actually looked pretty cool, and the music wasn't bad.

edit: apparently a beta was leaked of this.
Whoops I mean alpha.

no, it did happen. i was there. i remember distinctly. a mod (or admin??? i don't remember) came in to this guy's topic and quoted a pm letter he got from some square enix lawyer. the guy making the game freaked out and was very sad. he kept using this emoticon:  :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: "SQU AEENIX YOUR THE BST GAME MAKERS EVER" and it was really very pathetic. it wasn't a case of him looking for excuses to stop working on his stuff.

I was hoping the rom hack would be like this, it's just like people and places switched around and crappy dialogue who cares
