Whats a position select mode?

HaHa! I bet you think its sexual positions lol. Basicly the games set in an internet cafe called Binary Pot and position select means you get to select where in the cafe you want to go. location would have been a better translation than position. Each girl has a job and is in a certain part of the cafe iw kitchen, office, cafe etc.

By the way it needs to be set in win 98 compatability mode not xp, my mistake.

99% is a bit harsh, mate.
Not really, when you consider that 99% of everything is crap. Seriously, if I wanted to dedicate myself to it for a little while, for every 1 X you name, I can find 99 terrible X.
This is the world we live in, and these are the hands we're given.

There are plenty of good anime out there, but for every good one there's like a 100 horrible ones. Ever since the 90's Japan's been going into Loli territory, something I find really disgusting and that should be dealt with. Dating sims are basically porn, most of them appealing to otaku and/or NEETs. I remember there was a dating sim buzz around my school when I was 11/12 (basically we played Ganguro Girl and other shitty games). The whole objective of the games was to see the sex scene at the end, provided you win. We lost interest soon after.

There are actually some interesting visual novels out there. Unfortunately a lot of them feature horrible, generic artwork.

Man how hard can visual novels be to make anyway. If you think about it there's really only a few variables you need to control (girl a affection, girl b affection etc, are you in a relationship? y/n choice (1 or 0), day if you really want to go there). I mean now that I think about it they're so god damn simple that it almost seems LAZY. There's a reason ROMANTIC PURSUITS are usually a SIDE QUEST in a bigger game.

Maybe I'm not thinking into it enough but I don't know it doesn't really seem that difficult at all. Chuck in some hackneyed, done-to-death systems, some cute anime girls *_* and you've got a best seller.

EDIT: Dating sims, rather. Visual novels are even easier!

The game framework is super easy - esp. when you have an easy to use visual novel creator like Novelty no coding needed but scripting is included for those who want to make dating sims or add minigames. The style of artwork used is up to the creator. Hotel dusk is a visual novel and that can't be discribed as bog standard anime style.

The question is: Can you write a decent story? Thats the hard part. You cant even reley on the old "find 8 crystals to save the world from evil" like you can in RPG's.

Yeah good point. I've always been sorta good at writing stories and characters and shit so I guess I didn't really factor that into the equation.

Also, would Trace Memory/Another Code be considered a visual novel or is that more... puzzle style?

Trace Memory seemed a lot less visual novel than Hotel Dusk, but I guess it still counts.

Never played trace memory but the best Visual Novel i ever played was Time Hollow. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Hollow It's totally absorbing. It's a DS game and you can draw portholes in time and add/remove objets in past to change the present. It  would be a 10/10 game if it wasn't woefully short. No dating here either.

Dating sims/visual novels are very similer if you cant play this for 10 mins then you might as well discard manga as well, books too. Try actully playing it before judging. If you tryed it and didn't like it, fair enough it's not for you.

lol "don't like gay anime dating simulations?? guess you don't like books!"

Trace Memory/Another Code and Hotel Dusk are something of a mix between an adventure game and a visual novel (and it works). Can't wait for the Wii game coming soon.

I just finished Katawa Shoujo (Lilly's ending anyway) and it was just.... Wow. I mean it was just... wow. Despite this being the first visual novel I've played (?) through, it definitely feels like something special, partially because of the subject. Which is Katawa. Now katawa, roughly translated, means "cripple" or "retard". Not a nice word. But it fits, because it's not a nice thing to be disfigured, or to have your arms or legs taken from you.

The game takes place after Hisao (the main character)has a heart attack, and subsequently discovers that he has a congenital heart defect. Once Hisao gets out of the hospital, he is transferred to Yamaku, school for the disabled. He then meets various girls during the short time in the first act (a week overall). But a portion of the game is also about Hisao dealing with his disability.

At heart, Katawa Shoujo is a dating sim, first posted on the /a/ board of 4chan. But it's so much more than that. It's a portrayal of the disabled and how they deal with their problems - and one of the best out there at that.Katawa Shoujo is still under development by 4 Leaf Studios, who have been working on it for 3 years now. It's a great game and needs to be experienced by everyone who has a few hours. (Lilly and Hanako are my favorite girls)

http://www.katawa-shoujo.com/act1/%5B4LS%5Dks_a1_%5Bwin%5D%5BB31099EF%5D.exe

can anyone play this and tell me if it's okay (i.e. is it entertaining, is the subject matter treated well, etc)?  i can't really download any big files right now and i've never played these types of games but it sounds interesting enough, i don't know
