Nerd venting? Maybe just in the "Anime sucks" section. If you think that is all the article is about skip to "THE MANDATORY PARTIES" part.

i kind of want to make fun of that article but i can't read more than five lines at a time without my eyes glazing over from all the self-righteous nerd venting. there was something about snes games turning yellow from smoke in shops or some other silly shit i think. actually i kind of like the idea of japanese people just doing their own thing while western anime fans just use the whole country as a blank screen to project some dumb fantasy life onto and get upset when they find out everyone still hates them.

jesus i pictured this dude going around with one of those paint swatches finding the yellowest cartridge

also snes systems at least turn yellow over time regardless, mine is yellowish and nobody in my family smokes :/  what a dumb thing to bitch about HOW DARE THEY SMOKE AROUND THEIR PRECIOUS GAMES

edit: ahaha and you don't consider this part NERD VENTING?  i think the anime part is more justified than this shit

Okay, here's one mostly related: In many Japanese offices, you're required to scream "Good morning!" at the top of your lungs, clapping your hands to your thighs, as soon as you enter the office area every morning. Everyone in the office then shouts "Good morning!" back to you. At my orientation for one company, the Human Resources Girl — whose face (figuratively) literally screamed "Hall Monitor" — was going over the "Good Morning!" protocol. Her explanation weird despite its terseness: "This is how adults interact in Japan." Most of the people at the orientation, like me, were under twenty-five. "Before we move onto the next item, does anyone have any questions?" I seriously and portentously asked a question, then, which I thought was hilarious: "If we're the first one in the office in the morning, do we still have to scream 'Good Morning' and clap our hands to the sides of our legs?" Her answer was immediate, and humorless: "Yes." "Well, I mean, there's no one else around to hear it, right?" "You still have to do it. It's the rule. Every employee must do this. That's why we call it 'protocol.'" This instant was actually the very first time I begin to ponder the logistics of actually going ahead and being homeless. You know, cardboard, up against concrete, is not only not uncomfortable — it's pretty good for your spine!

I pushed further: "What if I am the second person in the office, and the first person is someone with whom I have, previously, managed to successfully cultivate a congenial personal relationship? What if it's a person whose first and last name I know, with whom I share interests and hobbies, and we've previously agreed that we think this 'Good morning' shit is some serious bullshit, and we just agree to be like, 'Hey, what's up' to one another in the morning and we've also agreed that hey, if anyone else asks, we'll just go ahead and say 'Oh yeah, that dude totally screamed "Good morning" to me this morning'?"

The HR girl didn't even blink: "You still have to carry out the customary 'Good Morning.'"
This is my favorite part BTW.

anime is gross, we all agree, this is a fact that cannot be denied, however:

whining about people smoking around their precious snes games that THEY OWN and then later choose to sell years down the road is just plain bullshit, who the fuck cares???  find a non-yellow cartridge then, why would you ever complain about this???

also seriously he goes on to whine about how japanese people put tape over the barcodes of your drinks so that if you walk into another store they won't think it's stolen, he complains about a piece of tape on a can he's gonna throw away this dude is the biggest bitch i have read an article by in a while

i skimmed through that part too and it looked like more humourless nerd entitlement stuff?? dont they know im allergic ugh i bet if i were one of them i would get a "profound" apology. your office culture confuses and enrages me!!! why do they tell me to have a good day when i buy things when i know they dont really care?!

also im not gonna read the whole thing but a wordsearch shows no matches for the word "misogyny" which from all i've read about japan is a kind of curious omission in an article pedantic enough to bitch about yellowing cartridges

I'm gonna log on World of Warcraft and see if there are any raids starting, if not, I'll continue my Sentinel Insanity Mass Effect 2 run.

Whatever, I was never as interested in Japanese shit as I was when I read that article. Seriously.
Never been a huge fan of japanese games and most anime. And find people who say that japan has the best culture EVER has always seemed fucking dumb to me (don't get me wrong American culture is retarded to). So when someone who actually lives there comes out and explains why its not so great I was interested.

also he mentions that he moved there and liked it originally, he probably just ignored his irritation for far to long and it exploded into this article.

:welp: he's a bitch who can't handle his booze?

My neighbor, once, smoked in his apartment, sitting by the window. I could never see his face, though I could definitely smell his tobacco, because the smoke exited his window and promptly entered mine. That was a spring nearly ruined. I once put a note in his mailbox: "You know, if you're going to blow the smoke out the window — if you don't love smoking enough to just close the windows and turn your apartment into a hot-box, maybe you should just quit." He never quit.

ahahaha jesus what an awful person

also really japan probably has a ton of horrible aspects and some kind of cultural comparison could be interesting if it was done by someone who wasn't an entitled passive-aggressive baby but this list of incredibly petty irritations isn't close.

this is a way over-used example, but this is lost odyssey's world map theme, written by nobuo uematsu. sounds pretty alright until it gets to 1:40 and then it's just like jesus christ how the fuck does this sound GOOD, how is this what people actually WANT in their soundtracks. yesss, guitars, +1000000 sick-as points
yes, it is what they want because people are no longer capable of parsing things as anything other than epic wins or epic fails anymore.

guitars much? chalk up another epic win.

An apparent response by another editor who loves living in Japan.
but man

he points out also early on in his article that he is going to talk about the little things that bother him. The tape on his cup thing wasn't one of things that interested me admittedly. He even says that he doesn't know why he hates it when they do that.

Mostly just the creepy corporate rules. And office drone rituals, there obsession with honor and dishonor, apologies, etc. interested me.

Also, IDK why you think japan's culture hates women there... Like, most women there to my knowledge (documentaries I've seen on TV) are super independent (which is what a lot of people claim as the reason that their birth rate is low.)

Sure the anime and manga depicts women in... interesting ways... but whatever they are comics and cartoons. They should be able to draw whatever sexualised stuff they want. Freedom of expression.

Also, about that article, he's not really being serious and he knows how trite everything he's saying is. Tim Rogers is one of the only good game journalists and his whole thing is how off-topic and long winded and faux pretentious he gets.

http://actionbutton.net/

This is his site and it's one of the only video game sites even worth looking at.
