My dad just stayed in bed for too long today and he woke up feeling dizzy with double vision and when he looked in the mirror his eyes are going in random directions. He had this thing wrong with him 2 years ago where they thought it was a stroke but it was an infection of his semicircular canal in his ear (i think) that caused him to get really dizzy and throw up everywhere for days and now he has gone like this today but he isn't throwing up or anything he just feels really ill.

My mum just came up to me and asked me to google "detached retina" and I told her that he would be blind if his retina was detached but her asking me that is really kinda scary. We are waiting for a doctor to come to our house at the moment.

I have no real idea what could cause this to happen to my dad but I am really hoping it's not a stroke. He is 52 years old and his dad died quite young as well so I am just totally what the fuck right now.

Have any of you experienced something similar like this with people you know? I have no idea what is going on :(

That's really scary. I hope he turns out okay dude.

Also do you live far away from the hospital or something?

My mum just decided to take him to the hospital now. It's quite hard to move him about when he's dizzy cause he's a big guy and there is no real way of knowing if it was ambulance style serious so she has taken him to A&E.

He's also one of those guys who refuses to admit there is anything wrong with him too so its really hard to get info out of him when he's ill cause he's so arrrr i'll be OK *eyes go opposite directions causing my mum to go completely fucking nuts*

I feel really sorry for the guy cause he has been at work all week and now he would be having a sit down and playing RA2 or something but instead he's got these STROKE LIKE SYMPTOMS ffs.

You wouldn't necessarily be blind from detached retina.

My stepdad had blurred vision, dizziness, and weakness at work. They took him to the hospital, but didn't know what was wrong (after obvious testing) so they sent him home. A few days later he woke up and his left side was paralyzed, so he was readmitted and it turned out to be an ischemic stroke due to blockages in the arteries in his neck. He's doing alright now, though. I only mention this, because it sounds like a similar situation. I hope he's alright, too.

I have no medical knowledge at all.

I hope your dad turns out okay. It sounds like one of those craaaazy things that disappear and everyone goes "huh?????"  but like I said I know nothing and whoah eyes going all over the place? Must have been pretty freaky. Good luck, bud.

This is a system for quick stroke recognition:
Quote
   *  F=Face--ask the person to smile. If one side of the face appears crooked or drooping this person may be having a stroke
    * A=Arms--ask the person to lift both of his or her arms in the air--if he or she has difficulty with one arm this too might be a sign that this person is having a stroke
    * S=Speech--ask the person to speak. If his or her words are slurred or they are unable to speak, they might be having a stroke
    * T=T is for time. If any of the above symptoms are present you must call 911 immediately in order to make sure that this person reaches the hospital FAST.

Did he have any symptoms other than the random eye pointing thing?

We never asked him to smile but he was pretty weak. No one did the FAST test. We got him to walk out the house without falling over but he had to cover one eye.

http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Double-vision/Pages/Causes.aspx has a list of causes for "binocular vision" which I think is what describes when your eyes go independent of one another. He has had a thyroid problem in the past so I wouldn't cross that off the list. He had an MRI 2 years ago when the similar problem occurred but his eyes didn't scatter then. They didn't detect anything in his head.

I guess I gotta just wait. He'll be in the hospital for ages, I just hope he doesn't end up sitting in a waiting room and degrading or anything. My mum is with him and she is pretty assertive so hopefully he will be ok..

That’s terrible, I would be scared out of my mind if something like this happened to my dad.. he’s all I got. I hope your dads going to be ok and even though it may seem serious right now it might just be something small and not so bad. I think I remember hearing how being short sighted and not doing anything about it can make you dizzy and it can have all kinds of strange effects.

I'm pretty sure I had a mini-stroke (forget the medical terminology for it) once.  I don't feel all Flowers for Algernon about it afterward, so I guess I'm alright.

my dad would probably end up dead unless it was something ridiculously apparent because he is really stubborn as fuck and wouldn't even tell anybody if he was hurt. Hes fell off scaffolds at work, constantly getting cut on shit, he's even got a lump on his knee from when he hit it on something its a little bigger than a silver dollar and pretty thick and all kinds of other stupid shit. The only other time I can remember him actively going to the doctor for a health problem was when an air conditioning fan almost sheared his thumb clean off and I was around eight then.

If everyone in this country were like that, health care reform or insurance in general would be so much easier.  But we've got so many pill heads, not just addicts, but people who feel the need to get a prescription for every minor ailment.  Then you have the over-prescription of antibiotics, which allows for faster mutation of some diseases.

yeah my whole family is like that. But I honestly wouldn't go either unless I was sick enough to warrant it and just suffer through it if its a minor ailment.

I go for alot of physicals but my dads getting into his fifties I think and he's really susceptible to colon cancer (both my grandma and grandpa had it) so I'm thinking if he doesn't go and get checked eventually its gonna end up hurting him.

My grandpa only got it picked up early because of the VA clinic I'm pretty sure.

Well I've been to the hospital and he has to stay there. He's seen a doctor once all day and we got kicked out at 10.30 when they were waiting for a new doctor to say more on the situation. There was another guy on the ward who had either suffered a heart attack or some angina flare up or something who was priority 1 on the whiteboard outside and my dad was priority 2.

I am just gonna sit up and hold the fort I think.

What you're describing almost sounds like vertigo (especially the dizziness).

His eyes have gone completely off centre though. It's a bit more disturbing. This evening he says he's not as dizzy and he ate some sandwiches I made for him but his eyes are just not right and its totally worrying. You can't really speak to him either without feeling really sad cause you look in someones eyes when you speak to them and his are not what they were last night :(
