This summer one of my old school friends gang raped a 13 year old, and some guy I used to speak to on the train stabbed someone. What a lovely town.

I am having an incredibly difficult time writing this research report. It's basically a summary of another article but I'm having some issues.

Do I have to reference everything? That may seem obvious, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be putting a reference after every single sentence or not which it seems like I'll end up doing when I'm summarizing ideas from the article except (Snyder et al., 2003, pp. 1). after every sentence becomes really obnoxious so maybe a more general reference on my reference page is fine, but then how do I decide what I need to reference and what I don't need to reference and if I'm referencing the article referencing another article do I reference that article or the article it is referencing holy christ

i always hated referencing things

i mean if it's something to be published then sure do it but if it's for an assignment i think you should just have to give what sources you used and the professor can probably figure it out themselves, the bulk of the shit you use in an assignment is going to come from a handful of sources, it's not like when a scientist has been studying things for years and years and have an equal amount of sources and their own findings, i have nothing of my own to add to a paper about INTERNATIONAL LAW, i just know how to use the sources given to come to a conclusion

If all your references are saying the same thing don't seperate them (Hammer & Thyme, 1997; Smith & Wesson, 1814; Gough, Gough, & Hammer, 1923). There's also different ways of referencing to reduce monotony (Jordan, 1995). Michaels and Michaels concluded that climbtree rarely uses this one because he can never remember where to put the date (2009). If you're doing a lit review expect it to be reference heavy, you're not making your own points for the most part you're summarising the research.

oh i see, you usually reference them once and then refer to it as "their findings" or "the study," then reference again whenever it'd be unclear that you're talking about it again. if you want to reference someone they've referenced then you put it in as a secondary reference (Smith, 2007, as cited in Snyder et al., 2003) but this looks pretty bad so try and avoid having to use it, else you'll probably get a "READ THE PRIMARY SOURCE" note. you might be able to get away with stuff like "their work was a replication of a previous and much larger frog based study" rather than "their work was a replication of French and Onions much larger frog based study (2002)"

if you are paraphrasing you have to use a referance, if you're just citing a general idea in your own words then it doesn't matter but you should prolly add it to that paper thing you've got to make with all your sources.

if you're using someone elses idea you have to reference it, if it's a widely held idea then you don't (eg you don't have to reference GRAVITY or named effects), if it's an idea you've come up with as an undergrad reference it anyway or back it up really really well else they'll think you're plagiarising

apa style doesn't have a bibliography, don't include anything in your references you haven't refered to in the text

if it's from the same article i'm pretty sure you wait until the end of the paragraph to reference it or if it's just two or three sentences then put it at the end of the group of sentences.
