We already have machines which can detect trace amounts of explosives (even in gel form, iirc). The problem is that they are too powerful, so only 1 in 4 passengers are randomly selected to go through them. As the story goes, my friend's dad stepped on a small bit of powder which could be turned into explosives. He had to be pat down and missed his flight. Naturally, this is bothersome, and people hate going through these things for similar reasons. I think the obvious fix would be to just make these machines less sensitive, and use them for all passengers. This would actually work better than the scanners and pat-downs because scanners and pat-downs (typically) don't detect anything hidden within bodily orifices (according to NPR, nov 16) whereas these would.
