Had a conversation on steam with a friend.
---
Warped655: IDK. slut, whore, ho, and skank are pretty derogatory.
Gareshra: It's true.
Gareshra: But that's mostly connotation.
Gareshra: I think there should be a non-derogatory word for someone who sleeps around
Gareshra: Just makes sense for there to be
Warped655: Yeah, there needs to be a term that means these things but in a positive light. like "sexually liberated girl/woman" with out sounding retarded, new agey, or something you'd hear a hippy say.
---
Anyone else agree?
Also talked about books and the internet as reliable sources of information.
Steam discussion (Click to reveal)Warped655: Saying the inherent difficult nature of publishing a book makes it any more reliable as a source then the internet falls flat when you realise that a lot of moronic politicians, racists, and crazy rich people publish books.
Gareshra: True
Gareshra: BUt it's not THAT which makes books reliable.
Gareshra: Or the internet less so.
Gareshra: It's the way people act on the internet.
Gareshra: When you put something on a book, your name is attached
Warped655: well thats my other point.
Gareshra: On the internet, it's not.
Gareshra: It's anonymity.
Gareshra: Not that books are "harder to make"
Warped655: you can publish a book anonimously. Though yeah its not as common.
Warped655: or under a pen name.
Gareshra: true
Gareshra: But it's just different.
Gareshra: Books also must be published in large chunks, whereas ideas on the internet are "bite sized"
Gareshra: It's a matter of information flow.
Gareshra: And accodringly, certain websites are just as reputable as books.
Gareshra: accordingly*
Warped655: this might be just my paranoia. but I also think that people take the internet as unacceptable source because its rediculously easy to use in comparison to books.
Gareshra: Hrm
Gareshra: ?
Warped655: Its like "No you didn't to the same amount of work to get that info that I did when I was young."
Warped655: so it must have less value
Gareshra: True.
Gareshra: That actually makes sense.
Warped655: the internet also devalues certain parts of academia. Memorisation is no long really needed, it just makes things a little faster sometimes (though probably 'rougher')
Gareshra: Heh, yeah.
Gareshra: I like the new systems of the internet though.
Gareshra: It allows raw understanding and comprehension to beat out factual memorization.
Gareshra: Though that won't get you laid.
Gareshra: CHicks love guys who know how to bring up random detials in conversation.
Gareshra: Makes you look cultured
Gareshra: Which gets you laid.
Warped655: I'm sure there were people who had dedicated large portions of their life to reading and understanding stuff. lots of work. then the internet became easy and vast in its knowledge, it allowed people to ascend to their level of understanding much faster.
Warped655: its like people who play MMOs like WoW. When they introduce easy and faster methods to leveling people get pissed.
Warped655: Like I spent 1000 hours getting to 60. now it takes 20.
Gareshra: I agree.
Gareshra: People are stupid.
Gareshra: Academia is no exception.
Gareshra: ;p;
Gareshra: lol
Warped655: Well. its not that they are stupid. in the case of academia. its the insecurity of becoming outdated or useless.
Gareshra: Let me rephrase
Gareshra: Not stupid, unwise.
Gareshra: I think intelligence is more than just "intelligence"
Warped655: so in order to at least seem important. the ignore or bash those that don't get their knoledge to slow and outdated way.
Gareshra: It's also things that fall under things such as wisdom, common sense...
Gareshra: and to some extent, moral compass..
Warped655: they ignore*
To lazy to fix spelling.
