And (let me guess) school was made to "help" people? Don't make me laugh.

Thanks for wording this in a way that makes you come off sounding completely stupid.  No matter what your opinion of current schooling is, I think it's pretty well established that the original reason school was "made" was legitimate education.   :welp:

you can live a moral or kind or whatever life without any sort of religion, most people are raised to BE GOOD and do it out of having always done it, not out of fear of getting the bad ending to life

In my post I was just saying how the beginning of the universe could actually have a bearing on someone's life. I wasn't for a minute suggesting that If there is no God then it's pointless being a moral person, I was merely giving a reasonable example of a response someone may have to the fact they may be a cosmic accident.

Public free education was instituted here to INDEED help people. This is the entire premise of the Education Act 1870 here.

When talking about sheer unadulterated control, that subject you so casually glanced over is the 1# culprit out of the things you bothered to mention in that post!

Wow, in a thread FULL of jerkoff humour, I'm amazed that people have responded seriously to my CLEAR RAMBLING JOKITUDE!!! And now you're attacking education as being more of a control mechanism than religion? Even education that promotes free thought, problem solving and, above all, independent learning? Surely you jest sir, surely you jest!

Does it really matter what belief system the school imposes on you about the origins of history when all they care about is weaning out the top 5% and training them to spend the rest of their lives taking advantage of the 95% that are put in that lifelong establishment for the sole purpose of being convinced that you are worthless for not being smart and doomed to serve the remainder of your life out at some dead-end job that's probably at a factory making that precious shampoo product that is ever so improved by so called "new science".

WHAT A CYNICAL VIEW OF SCHOOL! G-D BLESS AMERICA :D!!! School doesn't work like that here bucko. The kids in the top 5% are ALREADY weaned out and go to PUBLIC SCHOOLS here (like private schools, but a lot more prestigious). Most others go to comprehensive schools (state schools), like the school in which I work. The entire curriculum, thanks to the United Nations' 'Rights of the Child', is child driven, being child centred and backed by our 'Every Child Matters' agenda. Anyone telling children they're worthless here is pretty rapidly reprimanded.

Thank goodness I'm employed over here! Your system sounds TERRIBLE!!!

And yes, it does matter when certain options (such as creationism) are taught to students as fact. That's pretty much pure manipulation which, as I said earlier, goes against everything that education here stands for. Independent thinking bucko! It's high on the agenda here.

Oh, we don't teach creationism by the way, except in R.E. classes alongside other belief systems. Certainly not in science.

And Alec: IT IS NO JOKE MY POST IS WHAT I SINCERELY BELIEVE!!!!! ESPECIALLY THE BITS ABOUT SCIENCE!!!

It's funny how some people in the latter category tend to think somewhat like
big bang = fuck yeah let's have fun *kills babies rapes bystanders harpoons cars*
some kind of god - oh no better live responsibly *loves everyone except from them gays and furries*

uh in the same vein, like is it normal I'd get more angry over a guy like Bernard Madoff than Charles Manson or somebody because I mean it's terrible but he also seems really crazy and Madoff seems more like he's a scumbag because he was probably thinking straight when he decided to steal from everyone while I figure Manson's decision-making process is like dsfdfdfbv cornbiscuits not that he isn't a scary guy but if they suddenly made it perfectly legal to steal anything I think even random people would start robbing but I think if murder was legal some average guy wouldn't be like hey I think I'll kill someone today but I dunno sometimes I think this is how people think about the death penalty

Edit: I forget exactly what incident I was thinking of this it might've been some editorial where everyone was like 'I'd pull the switch myself' yeah I'm sure all those people would pussy out

Just the whole concept like how many people can conceive of robbing a bank vs. murdering someone those editorial people make it like it's really easy to do if you're just an average guy who's not messed up at all

Edit: I mean that's extreme but in general it pisses me off like someone who thinks it's really easy to get out of poverty. People with no concept of what an average person is like versus an exceptional/abnormal person. In either direction, somebody who's just messed up or somebody who's like the unstoppable good at everything person

Edit: Also people with lots of free time that overestimate what normal people can do with their time

oh yeah I went to a Catholic school and I'm pretty sure we just learned evolution and the creationism thing was like a paragraph or less and it was pretty vague and made a pretty bad argument for it

I think my last post was aimed at people like on GW who are like 'I'd hang him by his naughty bits' etc. and end up sounding more sadistic than the actual guy. But yeah it's pretty well established that those people should stop posting

I was just checking on Genesis, and the story of creation lasted for about 29 sentences. Since a paragraph uses about 5 sentences, the story of creation (according to the Judaism/Christian beliefs) is about 5-6 paragraphs, but I can understand what you say about lacking much explanation for this type of origin.

It's the same over here in the Netherlands.

I went to a catholic high school and one of the classes was religious education. It's taught the way it should be: as somewhat of an extra history class. And I actually really liked it and tried hard to get good grades, because the history and culture of religion is quite interesting. It was not 50 minutes of indoctrination every week, and since it's assumed that the average person already knows a thing or two about christianity, we actually spent a lot more time dissecting other religions.

That is exactly the way these things ought to be taught (A RHYME!!!)

Independent thinking is a skill that sets young people up for life, and is highly sought after by many employers. The problem comes when certain individuals - and these individuals exist here too, but have a LOT less influence than in the US - want to force Science teachers to teach things like Creationism in science classes. Elsewise I find RS itself to be a fascinating subject.

SCIENCE CLASSES ARE FOR LEARNING ABOUT WHY WE SWEAT AND ABOUT MASS AND STUFF!!!!!

I didn't mean the bible I meant our science books weren't like skewed towards creationism and all jesus-approved, they were just some random science books

I actually believe in the Big Bang creating the universe and the God (actually highly evolved, technically advanced and powerful aliens) helped Mankind into it's current state thousands of years ago.

I've come out of the closet. Do not hate me. :(

It's cool. I believe in the beginning there was a bald-eagle and the universe came from his egg.

It's called Americanism. I am a devout believer
