Important![/u] This game is stand alone. It does not require the RPG Maker VX RTP to be installed. Newest Version: 1.1 - Chapter One

Introduction[/u]

Taltarus: The Legacy is a VX remake of the RPG Maker 2003 game, Tales Of Worlds, which includes a rewritten story, new dialogue, new features, completely new maps and a revamped new gameplay style. The idea was for the remake to mirror the quality and style of more recent Dark Gaia releases such as Legionwood. Whether you have played the original game or not, Taltarus: The Legacy is designed to appeal to all fans of J-RPGs, and I have worked hard to produce a quality game. So far, the game includes the entire first chapter, which holds up to four hours of role playing gaming, and your save file will be able to be carried over to future releases containing further chapters. I intend this game to come with a full compliment of five chapters with just over twelve hours of gameplay within.
While you wait for the next release of my main project, Legionwood, I strongly urge you to play Taltarus: The Legacy, and discover from what Legionwood was born.

Note: I've chosen to release this because work on Legionwood has been unexpectedly pushed back. As a result, I've felt that I should provide you with a stopgap, so I decided to release the work I've done on this project so far. I was intending to pick up the project again after finishing Legionwood, so unfortunately you'll find some spoilers to Legionwood's plot within. You have been warned.

Story Outline

A great evil has gripped the world. Time itself has been mutilated, and the lives of all will forever be doomed to relive the same life of terror over and over until the one who bear's the Creator's soul arrives, one who will carry the legendary sword and restore peace to the world and rewrite the planet's history itself...

The world of Taltarus hangs on the brink of war. The Arcturian Empire, stable and neutral for many decades has mysteriously launched a war campaign on the free lands of the world.
Harnessing the legendary power Mana, which created the world, rumoured to be impossible to control save for the prophesised demon said to arrive at the brink of Taltarus's life, the Emperor encroaches on Endor, the last free kingdom.
Rean, holding a legendary sword passed down to him, and an as of yet unknown role in the death and rebirth of the planet, and his companions, the Remnants, members of the world's last free army, set out on a journey to reseal the Mana Shards, sources of the emperor's power, before the Mana balance becomes unstable and Taltarus itself tears into pieces.
What the experience along the way changes their lives, their destinies, and the fate of everyone alive now and everyone yet to be born. They discover the dark secret behind the empire's invasion, a secret that has held the world in it's grasp for thousands of years, and one which links them intimately with both the current crisis and the very birth of Taltarus.

But first Rene must uncover his own past, and discover a secret about himself that he'd rather have not known.

Game Features:

> Experience an intricate and epic story starring unique and highly complex characters with different abilities and each with their own dark past and a great destiny.

> Defeat multitudes of carefully scripted foes using a rivetting turn based battle system. Combat in Taltarus is greatly balanced, and battles require thought, strategy and perserverance to survive.

> Explore a massive J-RPG world. Taltarus has a great emphasis placed on exploration and dungeon crawling, each location is vast, well mapped and full of quests to solve and treasures to discover.

> Play various fun mini games including rapier duelling, a monster arena, Blackjack, and more to earn money and items.

> Relive all the adventure and emotion from Tales Of Worlds in a greatly enhanced RPG Maker VX game.

the enemy monstersets are way too high resolution especially when paired with the character sprites, same with the hero sprite on the world map

Okay, thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I wasn't really focusing on those things yet, I'm trying to nail down the feel of an old RM2k3 game. Please do try it though and tell of what you think of the gameplay.

Important:
It seems my antivirus was scanning whilst I was making the install, and Install Creator glitched and missed out two files. I'm uploading a new one to MediaFire as I type this, should be up within the hour. Sorry for those who downloaded already and experienced problems. I hope you'll download again and enjoy the game!

Umm... If that's a compliment, why thank you! I hope you enjoy it!

If on the other hand, you do believe the game looks like garbage, it's because I'm actually trying to use inferior graphics to replicate an old style of game.

You should use the straight border chips for the tops of the mountain instead of using the tall grass for the border, it'd look better.
Also, if you aren't already, use the far left or far right mountain chips at least for the sections that are two tiles or wider.

Thanks. Relating to the graphical inconsistencies, I am trying hard to iron these out. However, this game is a spin off of one of my current RMVX projects so it's a shame that you don't like VX games or you could try some of my other games while you wait for more chapters to this.

So much nostalgia. It's unbearable. RPG Maker 2003 is the one I use most frequently, and seeing a RPG Maker VX game with RPG Maker 2003's RTP graphics (especially when it comes to tilesets) is a rare sighting.

Well, there is another game that uses this graphical style, Demon Tower by Craze. That game inspired me to create an RM2k3 styled VX game. I'm hoping you'll all feel nostalgic playing it, harkening back to the "old days" and I'm glad to see I've been succesful.

It's great to see you are actively ripping off Craze's ideas.

Because RMVX offers more room to create systems and features that I lack the skill to event in RM2k3. Otherwise, I would. In VX, I can use scripts to tweak everything to how I want the game to be.

@zengage: You may say that, but you'll notice that my game and Craze's are actually very different. He made a dungeon crawler. Mine is more of a generic J-RPG style game.
