So christmas is coming up.

I don't normally give a shit but its kind of important this year cus theres a possibility it might be my grandpa's last and I want to give him something to help him out, maybe get out more and keep him a little healthier and its pretty important I make it this time because if I don't it will be the fourth in a row that I've missed. Also its very early to be bringing up the whole christmas thing but since I'm shipping I won't have very long inbetween vacations to get this done.

So my grandpa has trouble getting around, something about his knees and back being messed up and he can hardly walk without holding onto something but won't use his cane because I guess he's too proud or maybe it looks dumb I don't know.

I want to have him a wooden cane made by hand. But to do this I need to find a place to get it done. And some information.

What kind of wood should I use? Would oak be sturdy enough and easy to craft something out of or is it too hard? Will I need to get his height and weight measured? Is there a kind of establishment I can go to get this done?

What I'm thinking of having done is getting the cane made with the hilt shaped like a gator head and having the legs and arms carved or burned out into the wood (theres a tool to do this can't remember what its called). Maybe have little spines put where the tail would be and possibly the back of the gator.

I'm having it done in the shape of an alligator because my granpa (we call him pop pop) really likes the Florida Gator football team (UF) and if I got something personally made for him with it I know he'd probably use it and atleast think its the best gift ever and maybe it'll make him feel better.

Also, does anyone know if the school has some kind of rally saying or something that I can put onto the cane? I was thinking if I couldn't find anything that sounded good I'd have "Swamp King" put on the shaft somewhere and maybe a big "F" put on the gator's stomach.

If I can't find a place to do it my neighbor has some equipment and he makes stuff like this but I want to be sure it'll be done professionally and look really nice so thats kind of my B plan even though I'll probably ask him because hes pretty damn good at this stuff but I don't know about canes.

it's a really nice sentiment but in terms of practicality and ergonomics aluminium sticks are way better.

I used to collect canes from different places I'd travel to, and the idea you have sounds really good; the problem is anything more than just a basic design would be pretty thick, and likely to be fragile.
I had a cane that was from Aruba that was shaped like a lizard, with the handle being the lizards head, but the carvings were pretty much as basic as could be, and still the thing was fragile.

TBH I'm not sure how much you're wanting to spend, but like climbtree said you'd probably want it made from some metal. Wood would probably snap, especially if it had chunks carved out of it. I had one that had copper branches around it, and it seemed to work but iirc it cost like 30-40 dollars more than the average cane.

Coincedentally, I do have a wood burning pen, and I'm not sure how it would look on a round cane, but what you're talking about is definitely doable as far as burning.

I would probably look up businesses on the internet and try and get quotes.

The only carving work I want done really is the head on the cane itself and then the other stuff could either be sanded or wood burned.

I might check out metallic canes and it would probably be alot better but I don't know anyone that could fabricate canes but yeah I'll check around to see what I can find when I get home.

I'm not worried about prices at all and I'm expecting to pay like 100$-200$ bucks for a nice one but if it was a little more I'd be willing to pay and I'm sure my brother or someone would help out if they heard about it but this is prolly something I'll do on my own.

Also if you put varnish or hardener or whatever coating on the wood doesn't that make it alot stronger? Thats what I planned on doing putting some dark finisher on it and getting a pretty solid wood that would support his weight.

He's a pretty big guy though I think he's over six feet and over 200lbs def

It doesn't make it stronger it just makes it more resistant to water

Yea for somebody 6+ feet and over 200lbs I really think you ought to go metal.
I'm not aware of his condition but if he's putting more than half of his weight on it every other step he would need a pretty thick wooden cane.

I can't think of any off of the top of my head but you might try one of those places where you buy the weird metal dragons holding crystal balls and swords and shit like that.
You probably won't find what you're looking for, but maybe they can hook you up with someone who can do custom work?

A lot of people who use canes can use them somewhat casually sort of the way we see House from the show use his, but from the way you described your grandpa 'who can hardly walk without holding onto something' will most likely put a lot of his weight down on the cane so it definitely will have to be something extremely tough, like Climbtree said an aluminium stick would be best even if it doesn’t look all that great. Then again I don’t know much about wood, or canes for that matter so speaking to someone who sells them could probably give you more information.
