Nothing "happened" Her style changed over time and the songs no longer showcase her voice like the used to. I doubt you could find a female pop vocalist that can touch her now.

Beyonce's not that great. She's good, but I don't consider her one of the "big" voices, a la Whitney, Mariah, Christina, Celine, Jennifer Hudson, etc. And her music is pretty shit. I mean...'Diva'? Are you serious?

Mariah had one of the largest vocal ranges in American pop, and that can't be denied. What other female singer can/could do the things with their voices that Mariah (circa 1990-1997) could've done, and so effortlessly? Not Beyonce, I'll tell you that. Not even Mariah's manufactered clone Leona Lewis is half as good as Mariah used to be.

Mariah's voice has gotten really bad now, but during her prime, she was nearly unstoppable. Not only could she go really high (her famous whistle register), she could also hit extremely low notes. She had far more vocal range than Whitney Houstin, if slightly less power.

I used to be a big Mariah fan too, but this is crazy talk. Her voice has without a doubt worsened over time. The woman STRUGGLES every time she has to sing live these days. Her voice used to be crystal-clear and pitch perfect, but now it's airy, thin and whispery---the woman can't even sing simple songs like 'Touch My Body' live without sounding a hot mess, songs that don't even require actual singing! Saying that she's devolved into a shell of her former self doesn't even begin to describe it.

no yeaster I was kind of joking around. I don't really listen to beyonce either, but I think she puts on a pretty good show and out of this brand of pop I might like her the most. I actually wanted to talk about this in a thread about vocals in general, because I kind of hate the stuff you're describing and I think it'd be an interesting thing to discuss. good female vocalists to me are like, carla bozulich and karen dreijer-andersson. I like Kate Bush a lot too, out of these three she has the most traditional vocals which makes her the most similar to Mariah et al but her stuff is still pretty different from their straightfoward pop

bob dylan is a horrible singer

mariah carey is technically amazing, she can cover like 12 octaves or something (that's what the image on the front is in reference to, the number of D's she has)

I was totally exaggerating, but still, Mariah was a vocal beast in her prime and not many singers could compare to her vocally. Not to say that there weren't any other amazing vocalists out there, because that's obviously false, but very few were on Mariah's level.

i have never heqard of those two?!? also i checked that Mariah Carey video yeaster posted and yeah that was actually technically impressive but i think lot of us don't care about it that much since the material and interpretation/expression is not good at all.

don't ask for good women singers, i don't know many at all!!! like ugh i guess this is sort of inevitable but for example JEFF BUCKLEY is a whole lot better than the most of the mentioned good pop-singers (Whitney, Mariah, Christina, Celine, Jennifer Hudson, etc.) because not only he is technically ridicilously good but more importantly (!), he is really good at conveying emotions/good power of expression and fantastic interpretation of material. Mariahs album cover is very VERY photoshopped, Blimpiah Carby is not that thin and hasn't been in a long time
