I'm in a Horror lit. class, were currently reading Anne Rice's "The Witching Hour". I was planning on reading it over this weekend. anyway, I realised something, other than books required by this class, I haven't been reading much in the way of Novels. At first I thought I was just being lazy, but I just realised, when it comes to Movies, video games, and TV shows, I usually have sites to go to like Metacritic or Gamerankings to determine if I should bother to play/watch them. I have a low tolerance for crappy media of any sort. Quickly giving up on some video games and stopping movies halfway trough, and I have little money to try everything. I want to get straight to the good stuff, and I notice that there really isn't any sites like these for books. Metacritic used to have a book section, but they closed it.

Anyway, I have 2 requests:

1) Do you know of a site with reliable reviews or even better, a site that compiles multiple reviews for books?
2) know any good RECENT Horror, Sci-fi, adventure books? Stephan king's books is an example of what I like.

Extra request that I came up with as I typed up this post: I also want to get into reading comics (not superheroes unless they are well known for having interesting stories or characters), anything you guys can recommend?

I'd say Wikipedia but that usually has lots of spoilers and basically gives away lots of the book (at least from wiki articles I read).  Can't you just read the summary in the back of the book?  Why not look up books on Amazon and see what readers have said about it?

I could read that back of the books, but a lot of the times I like to read a book without here anything about it first, but I have to at least know I like the author or have a recommendation.

And I rarely trust user reviews.

I'm just wondering, is the book you're reading a horror book? From what I hear and have read Anne Rice usually just writes homerotic supernatural type stories.  As for reccomending sci-fi/horror books, I don't what to tell you since you said you like Stephen Kings writing and i find the bulk of his work pretty awful(excluding The Stand and some entries in The Dark Tower).

It's supposed to be a horror book yes. But my lit professor said that the book has a lot of raunchy stuff in it. Wouldn't surprise me if that was the sole reason she picked it. She's sort of known for picking that stuff.

I just want a site I can visit every once in a while to conveniently check what's good, that's trustworthy (which comes automatically with a compilation of all the main reviewers scores).

But if there is no such thing there isn't much I can do. I'm just making sure there isn't some place I completely missed after Google searching.
