So my PC has a 1GB DDR2 RAM installed, I want to buy another 2GB but, thing is, can you mix numbers like that? IE, can you have 3GB RAM or does it need to be 1GB or 2 or 4 like that? I'm asking because a friend told me it either needs to be two 1GB RAMS or one 2GB one.

ASUS P5KPL-AM/PS motherboard btw.

Your friend is a goof, you can put in mis-matched RAM sticks.

You can put in sticks of different sizes, but the timings and volts have to be the same or the computer will start wonking out on you. You cannot put 'mis-matched' sticks in, in that sense. But seriously, DDR2 is so cheap you could just buy a 4GB kit and replace everything.

Its a better idea to only put the same sticks of ram(same brand and model)

Great! I usually just take my ram to the store and ask if they have the exact same one, just to be safe.

Thanks guys.

you can't take full advantage of dual channel ram with mismatched sticks, that's what he was getting at. if you're going to get 2 gigs of ram, it's best to have two 1 gig sticks (so you can use both at the same time) or one 2 gig stick (so in the future you can get another 2 gig stick). that's the reasoning i'm pretty sure
