The nation of Salfor had always been one that focused on peace and prosperity, and as such when a surplus of ore veins were discovered in the northern mountains, they took the opportunity to mine the ore to trade with other nations. For many years they mined within the mountains, until a strange discovery had been made - deep within the mine shafts a Crystal had been stumbled upon. This Crystal illuminated the mine, and a strange aura of mystical power surrounded it - even those who were not holy men of the nation could sense this. After studying the Crystal for some time, it was decided in a mutual agreement that this Crystal was special, and that spirits dwelt within. The holy men of the nation asserted that this wondrous Crystal was in fact the "Essence of Life".
Salfor, aware that the Crystal could bring unwanted attention, kept the discovery a secret, and worshipped it as a piece of God (the Gods?).
Centuries later Aertes, a nation from the far east that was not above employing spies, discovered the secret that Salfor was keeping from the world. With their advanced technology and specialized militia, they were able to raid the Kingdom of Salfor with very little resistance. The Empire of Aertes stole the Crystal, removing it from the Northern Mountains and returning it to their Empire.
Emperor Aertes had put the scientist Xyla in charge of discovering the secrets and powers of the Crystal from Salfor. Using information extracted by their spies and knowing full well that the Crystal radiated with magical energy, Xyla studied day and night, attempting to create the formula that would allow one to inject the power of the Crystal into the human body.
With each new formula, Xyla injected it within test subjects - adult prisoners who had been taken from their homes when Salfor was raided. Within hours of being injected, Xyla noted that the subjects became feverish and their bodies were covered with boils. They did not survive more than three days after being injected.
Frustrated that her formulas were not working, and desperate to make progress with the Emperor breathing down her neck, Xyla decided it was time to work with a new test subject - a child. She sent her assistants to Tier, a city just outside of Aertes, where they proceeded to use force and remove the child from the lifeless arms of his parents, and return him to the lab. They struggled to strap him onto the table, and to keep hiim quiet, but Xyla had managed to inject him, with no regard of the horrors he would be subjected to. He passed out immediately.
For days he was unconscious, but Xyla noted that he was not feverish, and was not covered in pus-filled boils. When he finally awoke, he had no memory of the events leading to him being brought to the lab facility, or ever being injected. Xyla was thrilled, and noted that this was not a flaw as some would believe, but rather, a blessing - a tool that could be used for the greater good of the nation, and the world. She studied him for quite some time, realizing that he had not only lost all of his memories, but that he all emotions within him had been killed off. This too, was a blessing in Xyla's eyes.
She informed Emperor Aertes of the success of the experiment, and also informed him of the memory loss, also telling him that the boy did not feel any emotions. Xyla told the Emperor that with the power of the Crystal at his disposal, he could create a powerful army - one that would obey all orders, whether 'moral' or not with no consequences, and that he would be likened to a God. Emperor Aertes, who had always been a man of ambition, gave orders for a nearby village to be raided, and all children to be returned to the labs for injections.
When they arrived in the village, they had promised they would harm no one, so long as the children were handed over willingly. The village was furious at such a demand, and stated that Emperor Aertes was nothing more than a demon. Parents fought to protect their children, but many were killed in cold-blood, the children ripped from the lifeless arms of their parents. A young man named Xander fought to protect his little sister, but was injured in the attack, and watched in horror as his sister resisted the soldiers, and was executed.
Some managed to escape the onslaught, and managed to save some of the children from the labs, also bringing with them some of the injured folk - including Xander. They fled to the small boats nearby, and sailed away, watching their village burn to the ground as the Soldiers continued to raid it.
The survivors of that raid formed a new colony which they named Eldia. For some time it was just the survivors, and a trader or two from nearby nations, but eventually it grew, and became a glorious city within only eight years. The people of Eldia were united in their hatred for Aertes.
Around the same time that Eldia had become a city, Emperor Aertes passed away, and crowned as Empress in his place was one of his most trusted and strongest soldiers, Dice. With the death of the "demon emperor", Eldia decided to take a position of neutrality, hoping that Dice would be different from her predecessor. For now they would watch, and pray that Empress Dice did not share Emperor Aertes' dream of unification of the world.
