I have a laptop running Vista. I changed my admin password while traveling and have promptly forgot it.  I Don't remember making a reset disc. If I use a password reset program   will I lose info in my admin account? I don;t want to redo everything unless i have to. I tried to use ophix to crack my password, but can't get it to work- no linux. Any suggestions?

While reading your post I noticed an add below it, which reads:

What are the chances of that? Anyway, I didnt check the site but who knows it could help.

you should be able to get a rescue disk somewhere that goes into the SAM hive and blanks the password. the one i have is called SAM system security and i have it saved over from my IT days. i have never had a problem with a password blanker just wiping the accounts, so it should be a good bet for you. if it doesn't work with vista, i'm sure there are similar ones that do.

I've tried some of the strategies on the list, but haven't succeeded yet.

try backing up the administrator account with windows backup without remembering security or system mount points, delete the account completely and create a new one with the same name, then restore the files you need for your desktop icons or whatever you don't want wiped

Try some of the tools on Hiren's Boot CD. Google it.

Thanks. I'd rather not reformat if I can avoid it. *Wanders off to try the next trick.*

it's not reformmating it. MSBACKUP will let you archive secure NTFS files without the password, and if you archive and restore without keeping the mount points and security settings you can basically strip them of their security stuff. next you're deleting the folder and pretty much recreating everything exactly how it was just without the password.

a format wipes the entire harddrive.

use this to empty the password:

http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

burn the iso onto a disk, start your pc with it in, then follow the on-screen instructions.

No, it wasn't either of those- I've remembered it  now. It seems that I'd been typing it in wrong. NOW on to the NEXT problem.. but we might as well lock this thread.
