I don't want to go too big, because I do play a lot of First Person Shooters, so I figure 24" would be best.

I'd also like at least one HDMI port so that I can hook up a console to the LCD. (I'm guessing that's all I need, anyway)

As I stated earlier, 24" would be my ideal size, but I'm wondering what else I'll need. I'm guessing I need an HDMI port my Wii; but would it be possible to have one of these monitors work as a television as well (for those mornings before work where turning on the computer to get the weather would be a waste).

My main concern is getting something with a good response time, color quality, and contrast ratio. I've seen some more expensive monitors with confusingly lower numbered contrast ratios than my current budget acer.

The "1000:1" concerns me, does that mean the monitor has a lower contrast ratio than my current monitor? Any input on the matter would be sorely appreciated, as well as any new suggestions.

Price isn't a huge object being that I'm selling off some junk to pay for this; but I'd like to stay within the 300$ price range if at all possible. If it matters, here are my current specs (that matter).

Factory overclocked Ati 4890 Graphics card
3.0G Core 2 Duo Processor

Would prefer a 1920 x 1080 resolution on this new monitor

look at the production year, pretty much if it was made more recently (by a year or two) the image quality will be better. contrast ratios are really deceptive, the small one is probably a dynamic ratio and the other is static. you might want to go into a store and see them for yourself, you can see a lot of the differences really really easily

What about one of those 120hz LCD's? Then you can do 3D on it... or alternatively have buttery smooth motion for your FPSing.

do 3D on it, what? the monitor doesn't do 3d. also 120hz won't affect your FPSing at all, it's not a CRT screen. 120hz looks smoother for movies because it's divisible by a lot more numbers so you don't get awkward multiples of frame repeats on play back when you're boosting the framerate

I pretty much spent my entire afternoon looking for information on this and all I have to show for it is confusion and frustration. Just when you think you've settled on one, you find out that such and such has input lag, or the colors suck, or some other flaw.

Just go to your (e-)store of choice, do a search with your budget as the limit and start looking at the monitors from the most expensive to cheapest and try to find the one with the most impressive stats (low response time (ms), good contrast (high x:1), good reviews from other buyers, required connectors etc.). It pretty much just comes down to money; the more you spend the better you get.

Thanks, but I only wish it were that simple. With all of the information and conflicting accounts flying around, I get the feeling I'd be better off picking a monitor out of a hat.

Just get the one with the ports you need for your kit. Unless you wait a few years for OLED to become mainstream then the screen quality is fairly unvarying throughout the market besides cheapo monitors.

i know this is gaming world so SOCIAL ANXIETY but try and look at them in person. walking into any store with a display of LCD screens shows the differences quite radically in cases, there's usually huge jumps between generations, it's not all hype

Uh no sorry to inform you that you are horribly mistaken. What you've described are LCD TV's, who use 120hz as a marketing buzzword.

LCD computer monitors are entirely different... they actually can display true 120fps motion rendered by the video card, or 60fps for each eye for nVidia 3D vision.

All of this is moot though as I did some research and there are only two LCD monitors in existence currently that will support nVidia 3D Vision, and they are the specialized 22" Viewsonic and Samsung models listed, and both only have 1680x1050 resolution.

1 - I've found that a lot of retail stores don't bother to calibrate their monitors properly.

2 - I only live near one place that even sells monitors, the selection isn't that big... Also, the display models themselves are in shit condition.

i don't get what's so funny about seeing the monitors in person before buying them. maybe our stores are just set up better, but you can play with the screens etc. also i was under the impression you were half considering a small HD TV, there's more stores that sell televisions than monitors.

I tried going to the store closest to me to test monitors / HDTVs out, most of the display models didn't even turn on.

Shopping for monitors can be tricky, especially when you don't have the option of physically looking at them. Your best bet would be to head to newegg, tigerdirect, etc, and just sorting the lists by popularity and rating. This is a poor solution, but aside from personal vouches there's little else we can do. Another thing about monitors is the specs can be really misleading. First of all, there are two different contrast ratios; dynamic and static. Dynamic ratios are created by a sort of firmware for contrast, so you will often see outrageously high numbers. Static is probably a better indicator of true contrast. In addition, response times can often by quite misleading too. For example, my monitor is older and has an 8ms response time. A lot of new monitors have 6, 5, 4, or less. The problem is with how they are measuring their response times. My response time is measured as black-to-black, that is, the time it takes for a pixel to go from black, to fully on, and back to black again. A lot of manufacturers will measure theirs as grey-to-grey, which is significantly faster, at least, on paper. Truth be told, it is unlikely for you to really have to worry about too much, if any, ghosting on today's monitors.

You are going good with getting 1920x1080.

I have a 1920x1200 screen and the scaling is to stretch, not to fit at 1080p so it is moderately stretched vertically when playing GT Prologue on my PS3, however when I played the bioshock demo it output at 1920x1200 so you win some you lose some.

My only complaint with the monitor you have chosen is lack of HDMI but you can use a HDMI to DVI cable

I'd say the only thing you're probably not noticing is that the monitor uses a TN panel which means that, although the response time will be in single digits, viewing angles will be very narrow and this might become a problem if you want to use it as a TV. However, the alternatives are way more expensive (e.g. H-IPS panel monitors such as the U2410) and have slower response times so its up to you.
