Yes, pretty much that. And I'm not really into the growling stuff too much, or just plain power chords either. What I love about metal is the riffs, and I'll admit some 80s rap did use real guitars. If anything, I'd pardon that era for rap only.

you know i was having this discussion with a roommate of mine earlier this semester and he was all like "BON JOVI HAS WAY MORE EMOTION THAN RAP EVER DOES" and he was a ll like "cypress hill, mike shinoda, sage francis, and fatal wisdom sound exactly the same to me!"(i was just choosing random songs) and then he played some 80's music and it all sounded like....generic 80s music to me....???
i think this debate is impossible because no matter what one side is going to hear metal as yuck and one side is gonna hear rap as yuck and then some people are gonna listen to all music equally and they are truly the best of us (i would be that guy except i don't listen to country sorry guys )
