A while ago, there were topics made on the freeware action-adventure game "Cavestory" by Daisuke Amaya. Simply put, I loved the game, and I believe that although it was still popular in a way, I do consider it a bit of a sleeper hit so to speak. But since I enjoyed the Metroid/Castlevania style of gameplay that the game offered, i've become interested in finding games that are similar. Are there any similar freeware PC games that a Cavestory fan might enjoy? I'd rather not shell out any money if neccessary, unless the general consensus is that it's worth it.

P.S. I vaguely remember a similar game, but I don't recall the name seeing as how it didn't keep my attention for very long...actually I believe it was more of a NES Castlevania style of gameplay than one that is similar to Cavestory. I believe it had a Spanish name, La Mulan or something. But that was a while ago and I might of had too much going on at once to really care(this initially was the case with Cavestory, but I loved it the second time that I tried it.)

Well there is The Underside, which looks very similar: http://www.insignificantstudios.com/preview.php

Other than Shadowrun and possibly Aquaria there aren't many. They remade the PS2 Rygar game for Wii and you could try out that... but honestly it's not so great. If you want to try a free one all I can suggest that you haven't played yet is Blaster Master for the NES.

La-Mulana. You're better off watching DeceasedCrab do a Lets Play of it. Or you play it and never finish it/get very far without a guide. And Underside is the only Cavestory clone I know of.

akuji the demon was called a cave story clone, but i dont think it was that similar, apart from the art style.

I'm pretty sure Akuji the Demon came out before Cave Story.

I was looking up that time-traveling hashish-smoking assassin game for MSX and found this:

it's like Cave Story and La Mulana had a baby

I swear I tried to get hired to do the music for The Underside like 3 years ago. It looks extremely familiar

how the hell are we seven replies into this topic before mentioning iji?!?

yeah, absolutely check out iji. i'm about 99.9% certain you will like it if you really loved cave story. i don't think it's nearly as engaging as cave story, really, but it's definitely worth playing if you dig those kinds of games. it's probably the game most like cave story that i've played in a really long time.

Is this a topic about games similar to Cave Story or just good indie games? I'm seeing suggestions of games that are nothing like Cave Story. Iji is great, but unless I'm missing something, it's not like Cave Story at all.

so far this is like a nifflas www.ni2.se game except with worse graphics and really bad music

games like within a deep forest (in that link up there) are good as explorational platformers but that's all they have in common with cave story. you never shoot or attack anything in his games.

iji has some similar gameplay in terms of constant fire and items everywhere but it's not nearly as fluid and the weird parts come across as unpolished rather than adorable (curly braces underpants should've been much creepier). it's a very fun game though! and you can quote me on that, huzzah!!! ^___^

It's not, really. It's a lot more action based later on, especially in the last level.

I love Nifflas' games but yeah they are 100% explore 'em ups with the bare minimum of action.

Not quite as anti-action as Seiklus, but close.

yeah, I've been playing it and it's getting pretty good.

nifflas's new game Saira has some more action, but you gotta pay for the full version.

I think you're missing something. The two games are very similar in how they function on a basic level. I think it's pretty clear that both have used metroid as a major reference point in the basic design of the game. Sure, there are some differences from there, but I don't really see how they are fundamentally dissimilar games. They really inhabit the same genre and style of games.
