(This is just a rough draft; if you think something should be addressed in this topic, whether you be a mod or not, feel free to mention it.)

Hardware and Software Forum Rules.

In addition to the general forum-wide set of rules which apply to all of the GW Forums (no spamming, flaming, trolling, pornography, image leeching, etc.), there are a few other points you should keep in mind while visiting this forum:

What this forum is for:
 • Topics and discussion about computer hardware (such as video cards, CPUs, and monitors) and software (such as operating systems, word processors, or other utilities).
 • Support, opinions, or requests for help about computer hardware and software in general. If Windows is giving you a "blue screen of death" or some shit, this is the place to ask about it. If you're looking into buying an expensive new PC component, this is the place to get opinions.
 • Mindless discussion such as "Post your desktop" or "What're your computer specs," or similar topics which spark little actual discussion. However, keep stuff like this inside of the "official" topics for which they are intended, instead of going off to create your own iteration. Redundant topics about crap like this will be deleted.
What this forum is not for:
 • Topics about, or requests for, "warez," "cracks," or any other kind of illegal software which you can download over the internet. Trying to ask people about getting your hands on this stuff is a very serious offense and will not be tolerated.
 • Topics about any kind of video or computer games or entertainment consoles. Stuff like that belongs in the VG forum, not here; this forum is not about playing games.
 • Advertising for your software or game. Stuff like that goes into People Power & Advertising. However, there is a slight gray area here; if you are posting a program in order to recieve technical feedback and improvement, you can go ahead. Do not post games for critical, non-technical review!
 • Anything regarding computer programming, since there is now a separate forum for such topics.
And remember, while browsing ANY forum here at Gaming World, always ask yourself "Is this the right place for this?" before creating a new topic. Look at the other forum categories we have here, and make sure that it doesn't fit into any other genre. Do that and you've avoid 80% of forum hassle!

Enjoy!

and computer programming not related to game development.
I have to disagree with this. Questions relating to game coding should be allowed here but we should be clear that coding with specific makers, which have their own forums below, should stay out of here. I think if someone is writing a game in PHP or Python or C++ or Java (or others, of course), questions relating to the project are perfectly acceptable for this forum.

That's what General Game Development is for; game development in miscellaneous makers or programming languages.

Have you ever seen the General Game Development forum? Every other post there is some ambitious prepubescent who wants to know the easiest way to make an MMORPG. I've never seen an actual question about code there. You're telling me that the GGD forum is better suited for, say, questions about SDL than here?

Um, yes it is, because that's what the forum is for?Besides, if no one is posting worthy topics in GGD, why the hell would they magically appear in here instead?

Fine. I think it's unfortunate though, because GGD is usually downright horrible and nobody capable of answering a non-trivial programming question ever goes there, while the tech forums were/are usually decent. I suppose I figured that if I ever had a question about a technique or algorithm or something, I'd post in GGD, but if I ever had a question about coding that algorithm, I'd post in Programming. Programming topics in GGD will likely die a lonely death.

And I agree with Doozer as well.It was allowed in the old general programming, I don't see why not here?GGD is a maybe a more appropiate place for questions such as asking for a good algorithm for damage or so. But your generic nerdy C++ game coders should definitely come here when they have problems, because the actual programmers visit this forum, not GGD.That rule is seriously dumb, and it wasn't there before and shouldn't be there now.

big thanx to dragonslayer for sig!

fully agree with above points.Game development, when you don't have a maker designed for that task, is remarkably similar to any other type of development. And by remarkably similar, I mean the same.

Well, the GGD mentions help in other makers and programming languages, which has always said to me "game programming help goes here." But I didn't really visit the old general programming forum much, so I didn't know that topics like that were A-OK there.Rules amended.

Agreed with Doozer.  Why do we have that GGD anyway?  Everytime I've looked there it's either the question about making an MMORPG, or a question like "does anyone know of a good free 3d rpg maker?"

Since we got a new forum for code, I updated the rules accordingly.
