oh shit. Good luck with that, hope you don't come out fucking whacko.
what made you change your mind to subs? the money or did someone convince you?
Edit: oh yeah jamie what did you want to know in particular about shipping? Its basically going out for an extended period of time to work on a ship. Me and Trace go out as deckhands on the ship so we keep up general maintenance, kind of like sea janitors or something. Ships are usually made of steel hulls which get painted and primed over, eventually the seawater eats through the paint and causes it to rust up, so we usually chip off the rust with a needle gun then re-paint it. We keep up with emergency equipment like liferings, lifeboats, and liferafts. On this particular ship its got a helo-deck so we dress out in fire fighting gear or escourt people on and off the helocopters and put their baggage on and off for em'. Theres alot of other shit we do too but its different shit all the time so basically just go with sea janitor. We also stand watches on the bridge, keep an eye out for traffic out at sea and anything else that might be out of the ordinary (sea buoys, possibly whales, or anything the ship could hit). We also steer the ship with coordinates given out by the mate on watch. The mate does the navigation and plots the chart and is the head of the bridge while on watch. On the DB 50 the deckhands don't usually stand watches though.
Being on a ship is like living in an incredibly small village but instead you're on a giant boat in the middle of the ocean. Everyone knows everyone and gossip spreads pretty fucking quick. There aren't alot of girls onboard usually, there are a few here and there but I guess many women don't decide to sail, or if they do its on like a cruise ship or something like that. You live in a fairly small room, sometimes with one or two other people and sometimes alone. There is a galley (sailor for kitchen) run by galley hands which cook you food at the main mealtimes and make sure that the galley is stocked incase you wanna snack or something. Some ships keep a little store onboard with candy and consumables incase you need something, this one doesn't though because the hitches (time you're serving) are pretty short and you can bring what you need on your own. Sometimes the weather can get rough and the ship will rock, I think those times are fun but some people don't. Usually if theres a hurricane or a really nasty storm coming the mates will try to move the ship out of harms way, but sometimes ships get caught in rough weather. I've never been through a hurricane yet but I think I'd like to be in a low scale one once just to say I did it.
there is probably a bunch of shit I forgot so feel free to ask if that was at all a serious question.
