It's pretty easy, but you're probably in the minority on the "worst" thing.

It kinda changes the fact that it isn't a fact considering it's one of the most adored games on the SNES, but whatever.

Well...probably.  Among others who grew up with it.

Frogfucius: Patience, young one.
Let me explain. Here is what happened...

You were rescuing Toadstool from Bowser's Keep.

After defeating him, and JUST when you were about to free the
            princess...

You heard a loud "crash", and saw a huge sword split the sky!

            Whoosh, out of the blue!

The shock sent the three of you flying.

Bowser and Toadstool are still lost, somewhere out there.
            Now...

You're worried about the princess, but first you need to take care
            of Smithy.

His underlings are wreaking havoc in our world!

"Mack", whom you defeated at Mushroom Kingdom, was one of them.
            More will be coming.

Mallow    : Grandpa, I almost forgot to tell ya something!
We found a star in the castle of Mushroom Kingdom. Do you know why
            it was there?

Frogfucius: A star, eh... ...most interesting.

This may sound illogical, but I believe shooting stars can grant
            wishes...

And now more than ever, I believe they will play a vital role in
            the fight against Smithy.

Was that too much to absorb? Would you like a recap?

            :: (Sure)

Okay, here's the gist of it! Smithy invaded our world and took over
Bowser's Keep. Toadstool and Bowser were thrown by the impact, and
now Smithy and his cohorts are now on a rampage. The shooting stars
are somehow connected to this disturbance and they're the key to
            defeating Smithy.

            :: (Nope)

It's quite a situation we have on our hands, isn't it?

Mallow    : Wow, everything sounds so dire and serious.

I guess Mack was only the first of many, Mario. Some of them'll
            make Bowser seem NICE.

Frogfucius: Mallow, you speak as if these things do not concern you.

You will accompany Mario in his adventure, too.

Mallow    : Grandpa! What are you talking about?

I'm only a simple tadpole. This adventure isn't for me!

Frogfucius: Mallow, my boy, I've kept this from you until now,
            but you're...

            Not a tadpole!!!

Everybody : Say WHAT???

Gotcha.  No gayer than any other Mario game.

Super Mario RPG, like all Mario RPGs, was really easy and probably best left for kids. The isometric perspective employed in the game is also pretty bad by today's standards. To be honest though, I dont think there was enough platforming in the game to warrant this as some kind of fatal flaw.

That being said, it was my favorite game when I was 8 years old. Back then it was a challenge, but I can breeze through the game in one weekend now.

If you don't play this game until you are a mid/late teen or adult, you're probably not going to find it that good. I still find it fun mostly for nostalgic value I guess.

Ok, well if you didn't find it fun, that's fine.  But it's no more ridiculous than the rest of the series.

<3 Legend of the Seven Stars

All this talk of the other Mario RPGs makes me want to play Superstar Saga again really badly. It was very close to as good as Mario RPG, maybe even better in some respects.

isn't this like....a REALLY narrow category to be making a topic about?
i really want to agree with this, but we have a seven page final fantasy topic that is basically the same thing. i came into this topic to say things of a generally rude and destructive nature, but i contributed to that final fantasy topic, so i will just leave this one in shame with the realization that i have contributed to topics like this extensively :(

If it makes you feel better Hundley, If I didn't think about the exact same thing before each and every time I post, I would make at least twice as many posts than I do now.

well yeah but to be fair there are a LOT more final fantasies than there are mario rpgs, and i think more people have played them

Legend of the Seven Stars was the game i beat the most in my childhood years. Just above Chrono Trigger. It was easy as hell, and maxing out char levels took a shorter amount of time than most rpg games in the world, but something about the style, the music and the art really drew me in. I'm gonna start it again tonight for kicks.

I've never played Paper Mario/etc. but they look like they automatically have better gameplay than mario rpg. But the style of the later games always looked so trying to be old-school, like I'm surprised they didn't include those lines coming off of mario when he jumps ( http://www.galeon.com/download-a-saco-2k2/SuperMarioBrosPAL.jpg ) but yeah I thought the style of mario rpg was a million times better, it feels more like claymation than 3D animation, I dunno if that was intentional or not but it reminds me of like RUSSIAN CARTOONS or something (dunno what this is but this came up and it totally is what I'm talking about http://img.youtube.com/vi/fvpR0LqYi8o/0.jpg)

but yeah it always felt too short/always stopped at like Booster/pirate ship/something, I didn't realize believe the extended universe/characters either. It never felt cheap when they put YOSHI in etc. it sort of could've started as a completely unrelated game like Super Mario Bros. 2

Edit: Wtf how the hell do you get to that Culex thing? This whole game was designed for gamefaqs wasn't it

Edit: But yeah I don't know if they really got influence from russian animation but it always felt like back in the old days the Square people took a bunch of random things and used those for Final Fantasy/etc. there's the random names from different religions/mythologies but I dunno maybe they did just convert Amano's style to SNES graphics and that's the result. Still feels like maybe a random painting will come up and they literally just traced it for one of the monsters (like the Metal Gear box/Terminator still ) if this is what they did in 1990-something they should go back to that way of making games instead of making everyone look like some jpop star

Edit: Also Nintendo should make a game that looks like the Super Mario Strikers box

I don't recall playing any Mario RPG side from Super Mario RPG for the SNES. I still haven't progressed very far in the game, but I enjoy what i've already played. The isometric viewpoint and platforming element took some getting used to, however; especially after playing the more traditional SNES RPGs.

Also I was very fortunate to find a good-working copy(albeit with a slightly worn front label) at a pawn shop for only 4.99...The cheapest that i've seen it anywhere else is somewhere in the range of 30-40$ USD.
