My friend wants a laptop!!! Recommend me some good ones!!!! because I haven't looked at computer hardware in like 6 years so honestly I have no idea what you can buy

What he wants it to do is read his webcomics, pirate films and tv etc and also run some kind of music recording stuff -- please also recommend me some good recording software I can get for him. He plays like a trillion instruments it's fuckin astonishing but I think he'll mostly be recording guitar

he also said GAMES? but I think that's going to add a billion £££s to get a laptop that can play games on top of the 3 things above, correct?

Help me gamingw! :heismyfriend:

yea you could pretty much do all he wants to on any mid-priced laptop from somewhere like Dell or Lenovo, but adding in GAMING is going to make the costs go up a lot.

check out the Lenovo Thinkpad T series, thinkpads are pretty much the best laptops and will last forever.

I wouldn't agree with that, I think ASUS make some of the best laptops. A recent study at least found they have the lowest rate of failure after 2 years.

If you're going to add gaming to the mix, expect to spend over $900 for anything decent.

Otherwise, any cheapy laptop will do for the stuff he wants. Shouldn't have to spend over $600 for a full fledged laptop.

Although expect some to recommend an entry level Macbook as OSX is preferred in the music recording industry. Those start at $1000.

lenovo uses professional/workstation graphics cards, so they are not optimized for games.  if you want to use them for games you'll have to find alternative video card drivers.   that being said though, i agree with dietcoke.

yeah i was thinking he'd probably just reconsider the whole "gaming" requirement after seeing the prices and just get a laptop with an onboard video chip.

those giant GAMING LAPTOPS completely miss the point of a laptop computer and are way too expensive.

That Alienware is actually pretty sweet... I normally avoid Alienware like the plague.

I bought an ASUS gaming laptop from the local Best Buy because they didn't have a restocking fee, so I used it on my vacation to Florida for 14 days and returned it no questions asked for a full refund (I'm such an asshole... I never intended on keeping it). Being able to game on the go is extremely convenient and awesome. If I ever buy a laptop in the future it will likely have a decent graphics card.

Cool so if I can make him forget about the games he can just get any old piece of shit? Do those new fangled lil netbook things have what it takes for his music recording needs or will he need to get a low-end proper laptop. He's pretty poor and just getting out of debt so I guess he wants a Cheap Computing Solution that isn't a piece of shit ie won't crap out in like a year

a netbook probably wouldn't be that great for music recording because the screen is so tiny and recording software usually requires a decent amount of screen space and processing power.

I still think he should go with a thinkpad and just live without high-end videogamin' on a laptop, they're reliable and have a history of winning awards for being great machines. they also look pretty nice if you like a down-to-business workstation look.

laptop livin' is a high-intensity always on the move lifestyle... you've got things to do and people to see. sure a game of solitaire or civilization here and there is excusable, but who has time to sit down and play crysis on a laptop????

Laptops: Get out there and live the life that's calling you.™
