There was an earthquake in Haiti and maybe 100.000 people died

I heard about it earlier today, does anyone know more details?

Some rich piece of trash, referring to Haiti: "Just watch, they're all gonna be over here in a week looking for jobs"

wow, ase. I don't think I've ever really heard anything as bad as that in real life.

I don't know how to even think about huge disasters like this.

This is really shit. You can donate $10 by texting Haiti to 90999, or there are links to donate things all over YouTube and the like.

What a crappy planet we chose to live on.

Of all the places an earthquake chooses to hit, it's the poorest country in the western hemisphere that just went through I think two devastating hurricanes in the past couple of years.

edit: 4!!!

Quote
Why does Haiti suffer a seemingly disproportionate number of natural disasters? The answer in that in large part, these are not natural disasters--they are human-caused disasters. Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. With oil too expensive for the impoverished nation, charcoal from burnt trees has provided 85% or more of the energy in Haiti for decades. As a result, Haiti's 8 million poor have relentlessly hunted and chopped down huge amounts of forest, leaving denuded mountain slopes that rainwater washes down unimpeded. Back in 1980, Haiti still had 25% of its forests, allowing the nation to withstand heavy rain events like 1987's Category 3 Hurricane Emily, without loss of life. But as of 2004, only 1.4% of Haiti's forests remained. Jeanne and Gordon were not even hurricanes--merely strong tropical storms--when they stuck Haiti, but the almost total lack of tree cover contributed to the devastating floods that killed thousands. And it doesn't even take a tropical storm to devastate Haiti--in May of 2004, three days of heavy rains from a tropical disturbance dumped more than 18 inches of rain in the mountains, triggering floods that killed over 2600 people.

My little brother is in the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and I just heard from my mom this morning that he's gearing up to get shipped down there as part of the president's promise of disaster relief.  He may be gone for up to 3 months.

And yeah, this is really terrible.

this is seriously the worst thing that could happen to that country right now. the fact that the earthquake basically took out all of the working hospitals doesn't make it any better. according to one aid worker, the only good thing right now is that "the weather is really nice." fuck, is that the only good news we get? "possibly hundreds of thousands of people are dead but the weather is pretty good. in fact the weather couldn't be better for this kind of earthquake." someone literally said that. THE WEATHER IS NICE.

This is horrible, I'm sure no matter what is said in that vein would seem pretty weak because as the privileged first world we can only empathize to a certain degree before our words lose meaning or emphasis.

I'm just hoping the troops we send over there to help to more good than harm and those people get the help they need, plus some.

Yeah, I spent a while googling this and I can't find any GOOD source that says that Haiti, even in lore, made a pact with the Devil.

I wish it was made temporarily legal for anyone to hunt this guy down and beat the living fuck out of him for a 24 hr period after said comment. I mean really whats the worst that could happen? He'd die? +1 for everyone else.

I think he's referring to the fact that voodoo is somewhat common in Haiti? I don't know.
Either way, I first heard about this on the news earlier and I wasn't aware that the earthquake was of that great of a magnitude; at least, I wasn't aware of the alarmingly high death toll. I can imagine masses of people who have lost friends and loved ones, their home and other personal belongings, stores that they rely on, among many other things. The concept itself is truly depressing muchless the actual event, and I wish that I could do more aside from donating money - I am relatively powerless, though. RIP to everyone who perished, and best of luck  to the survivors that are struggling to make it.

EDIT: Here's another cynical bitch that has no regard for thousands of innocent people that have died, and many others that have suffered the consequences.

I went to go to my favorite Starbucks and it was CLOSED. I had to walk a few more blocks. This is worse than what happened in Haiti.

this is really horrifying news. it really makes you realize how unstable the ground we walk on truly is. it only takes a slight shift in the planet for a hundred thousand people to die and an entire geographic way of life to crumble entirely.

What a crappy planet we chose to live on.
I DID NOT CHOOSE TO LIVE HERE

according to one aid worker, the only good thing right now is that "the weather is really nice." fuck, is that the only good news we get? "possibly hundreds of thousands of people are dead but the weather is pretty good. in fact the weather couldn't be better for this kind of earthquake." someone literally said that. this is actually fairly important, considering so many people are suddenly without homes. you'd see a lot more people dying, particularly the injured or elderly, if the weather was inhospitable.
