I heard Sagat is really hard to play.

But then I went and played against one and he just used maybe 2 - 3 moves to turtle in his end of the stage and any attempts to close the distance would end in "god uppercut" as I think it is called.

sagat is difficult to play properly.

you can win technically with just standing roundhouse and forward + roundhouse, and a probably 5 or 6 tiger shots.

sagat has some of the hardest 1 frame links in the game, though.

the most overpowered character in the game is Zangief imo. He can dodge hadoukens and any projectiles of the kind by doing his spin move, and if you get near him its over for you.

zangief can be ridiculous.

his jab spd can grab characters out of almost anything. mashing lariat has won matches in tournaments. his ultra has a 1 frame start up, so avoiding it is extremely difficult.

start with charge characters (blanka, balrog, honda). These are the best players to start with because there is not much in terms of combos that you have to master unless you want to be really good.

After that you can move up to characters like ryu and sagat. Honestly though it's impossible to get good with these characters using a controller, so I would just stick with the charge characters because most of their motions are holding back + forward + X. Okay.

Afura, you can't suck more than I do at SF4. I can beat my friends and family, but online I was always extremely bad. I think even constant humiliated me.

Maybe that's what I got for maining Rose, I don't know..

Zoning = exactly as the term suggests, knowing your offensive and defensive zones, which moves work best at which ranges, using attacks to keep opponents out, controlling the fight by limiting which zones your opponent can jump/rush in or counter you, and/or keeping your opponent in a certain zone where their options are limited.

FADC = focus attack dash cancel - hold your focus attack and dash forward or backwards to cancel the FA, requires zero gauge and is very useful for baiting attacks or faking out an opponent. ex. of how to use it: if you've knocked down a shoto user (ken, ryu, akuma's fighting style) chances are pretty high they're going to try to shoryuken you if you're close while they're down. Go in and start to charge your FA almost right beside them while they're down, cancel it by dashing backwards and punish their whiffed shoryuken.

Terms you might want to know -

Super/Hyper armor - basically instead of flat-out receiving a blow from an attack you'll absorb that attack and you'll still continue your attack animations. I can't remember if all attacks that are absorbed give you temporary damage or if it's just special attacks, also whenever you absorb an attack there's usually some delay you receive from absorbing an attack. All Focus Attacks have Super Armor after you charge the FA for a little while.

Armor breaking - some attacks have armor breaking and will allow you to basically shut down an attack that has super armor. Any sort of special uppercut usually has armor breaking

That is not at all what a focus attack dash cancel is.

focus attack dash cancel is when you hit the focus attack buttons (medium punch and medium kick) and dash forward or backward, thus using two bars of ex meter and canceling whatever move you were doing.

example:

sagat does tiger uppercut > fadc> dash forward> forward+round house> ex fireball/ultra/nothing.

you are also wrong about uppercuts having armor breaking. a regular uppercut has no armor breaking properties at all. ex uppercuts of course have armor breaking, they are usually multiple hits.

to armor break a focus attack you either have to hit your opponent twice, or use a move like a hurricane kick that has armor breaking properties.

some ex moves can also be broken, like balrogs ex rush punch, rufus' galactic tornado breaks that.

don't listen to that guy, unless you want to be misinformed about street fighter 4

I used to play SFA2 online for a bit. I also used to play SFIII in arcades for a while and I lost a lot, but won a few times.

If you are really truly bad at street fighter then you don't need complicated information about framedata and combos to win. Probably framedata and combos and SUPER TECHNIQUE will ruin you. Here is the universally recognised super unstoppable method to win at street fighter:

1) Be ryu or ken or someone like that.

2) Throw fireballs at them as fast as you can.

3) When they jump at you do shoryuken. If you can't shoryuken then use crouch and fierce punch (the hardest one).

4) If you know they're going to hit you and you can't stop them then block. If you think they're going to pause, throw them.

Eventually you will figure out what all the other moves are for and how to get people in corners and keep them on the ground and do big combos or whatever you like. Maybe you might be interested to the point of reading up all the nerdy combo prediction strategy stuff. But mostly Street Fighter is throw fireballs and do dragon punch. Also you can kick them in the face when you jump in and then kick them in the shins when you land. And throwing fireballs when you're in close works sometimes.

my bad I haven't played/discussed SF4 in a while, Focus Canceling is what I was talking about and you're right I forgot to mention that only multi-hit uppercuts (pretty much special uppercuts) have armor breaking, oh wait I did say special uppercut :/

don't play street fighter 4 at all.

play 3rd strike, it's far superior.

actually it's way more difficult to learn.

don't play street fighter 4 at all.

play 3rd strike Blazblue, it's far superior.

Fixed, most SF3 players will have migrated to SF4 and Blazblue has PSN/XBL support, and you're right SF3 is probably harder to learn than BB & SF4 combined

most of the 3s players I know in southern california, northern california, and the east coast are dedicated to it. they play sf4 and bb, but they are die hard for 3s.

You will just have to spend the time practicing especially since you don't want to invest in a joystick (Which would make it easier) Time spent and lots of button pressing in your future...
