It seems useless.. especially if all you can really do with it is browse the web, use it as an e-reader, and watch some videos.. at least for $500 it does not seem worth it at all.

I paid $579 for an Asus U81 14" Laptop... Core2Duo T6500, 4GB ram, 320GB HD, Win 7 64-bit, WLED display.....and it's even faster than my desktop....why should anyone pay $500 for a 16gb near-useless device... :(

I think Apple's just doing whatever they can to hit the cheaper-market segment and put a dent into the netbook buyer market...I just dont even see this competing at the least with an ION netbook though... IMO this was a stupid idea on Apple's part...

I think I'll be buying an ION netbook over this garbage.

it was not immediately obvious to me when i saw it that it didn't run a 'real' OS and behave like a fully functional computer, because, well, this doesn't make much sense.

if they actually come out with a non prototype version of it soon I will be very happy. It looks good but the demonstration by the bald guy was a bit shady. apparently comes out end of this year.

man, I seriously think we're becoming like japan in the 90's or something... I can't think of examples to back my theory up but to start just looking up wikipedias of game consoles it's like 200 neo-geos sold in USA 10 bajillion sold in Japan... and that wonderswan thing that had a black-and-white version and the color came out like a month later and they still sold 2 million black and white ones. I mean only way I could see that happening is if it was like the Apple of their time and place. We have to get it it just looks so FUTURE

Edit: The wonderswan thing was probably an exaggeration but didn't something really similar happen with models of iPod... like this one is in MONO but it's Apple so we've got to get it and it's just so white and everything

Edit: Actually it was the Neo Geo Pocket, it sold 2 million and 4 or 5 months later they came out with the Pocket Color

I've been reading a little more about it and it seems like it'd be a pretty neat netbook alternative with the keyboard accessory and the iwork port. My biggest issue is that you're kinda locked in the whole iPhone world which is a closed and controlled platform so until this thing gets 'jailbroken' you're pretty much locked into only running programs that the app store permits on their platform.

There's already been quite a bit of similar devices released running android on tegra chips and I think as android matures there'll be some more open and flexible competition to this. The more I think about it, the ipad seems like a really smart business model for apple: iphone-ized personal computing where apple has everything tied together and centralized from the hardware to software distribution through their own channels ensuring that they get paid every step of the way.

I don't think you get it. The iPhone/iPod touch platform is one of the fastest growing on the market and there's a ton of programs out there that people are buying. Even with videogames, despite the modest specs of the iPod/iPhone, its an extremely popular and profitable platform. So it doesn't make sense to say that the thing is useless if it runs software that a lot of people obviously want.

Nobody really gives a fuck about specs as long as what they're using works smoothly. Apple capitalizes on this by understanding that their consumer hardware doesnt necessarily have to be at the top of the line to sell because the platform is what is attractive to their customers

most computer users don't play video games very often, and even fewer play demanding video games. this isn't MIND. BLOWN. stuff this is a fairly mundane netbook alternative for those who could do most of their computing on the iphone if the screen was bigger.

it's interesting that apple made their own chip for it though, after switching to intel gear for their other stuff

What is the advantage of having a flash website
I'm not going to turn this topic into a discussion on web development but suffice it to say it's not true that ripping Flash out of the web won't leave a mark. Though a niche market, flash sites are still being made (mostly for the so-called "experience" sites, e.g. movie sites, corporate portfolios as well as a lot of applications and tools). That and Apple's claim that you have the "real" internet on the iPhone/iPad simply won't be true until they get Flash support.

the whole idea of it being used for ebooks is fucking retarded imo and kinda ignores why ereaders are so attractive in the first place. who wants to read a book on a backlit LCD??

Well it was mostly a familiarity thing. I'm a designer - I know Flash a lot better than the intimidating CSS and XHTML. That said, Flash can be very eye-catching (and easily downright gaudy) and behaves consistent across all platforms.

They have to be the two easiest languages I have learnt after BASIC.

They shouldn't be made because no one uses them. Company websites should be made without flash.

Is Flash really less intimidating than CSS???
We didn't learn CSS in my commercial art program, but we did learn Flash. Also Actionscript is a very easy scripting language.

I've tried CSS several times - I actually do know a little, but I can make things a lot easier in Flash.
For the record, here's that website I made in Flash: http://www.theparkballroom.com/
Definitely could be mostly if not entirely done in XHTML + CSS. The problem comes in where I don't know XHTML and CSS enough to do that.

neat website luigi-tan -.-''

it spikes opera (latest stable) cpu usage to 99% and the navigation doesn't work. You're right something like this would have been much harder to make with appropriate tools

Well you should learn it's a lot easier than you're making out I promise.

In web design the #1 priority is accessibility.

lol, embarrassing that it crashed your Opera. I use Opera too and have never had it crash like that...

Agreed... priority should be accessibility. I'm not a pro web designer and don't claim to be... I've still got a lot of work to do.

thank you for clearing that up. you are a rock in the midst of a river of ignorance. I'll start calling my colleagues to inform them of our collective mistake right away.
