Yeah I wasn't very impressed when it was unveiled. Maybe it'll actually be good in it's 2nd or 3rd generation.

no flash support
no usb/firewire
can't install any applications, mac has control over what is on it
terrible touch screen keyboard
there is no way to watch videos on anything but the tiny screen (no video out)
you have to pay upwards of 700 dollars for 3g support, that's kind of silly (also doesn't support t-mobile 3g.)
very very limited storage space, I would prefer a netbook with an usb external hdd.

joke response:

it's called the fucking ipad.

I am not an apple hater. I had an apple laptop and loved it. I also have an itouch and want an iphone.
Adobe is putting flash out for android and apple's mobile platform in the next month or so
You can install applications, just the ones that are in the app store.
USB, hardware keyboards, and presumably video out adapters are all going to be sold as seperate accessories

Storage is a little tight but I think apple is moving in the direction of streaming content from their online market and thats one of the main purposes of this thing. This also why apple's stock shot up and why its being hyped so much in the media. With newspapers and media companies looking to ways to make money from digital delivery of content, devices like these are how they're gonna do it.

Sure, you may want a netbook, but I think most people who are already users of the apple app/multimedia markets(iPhone users primarily) will want this thing.

Its really not hard to see why this thing will sell and how it will be used, but I think a lot of people look at it and say "I don't want it so its useless" which is p. Dumb IMO

Flash support is sort of something you would expect right out of the box.

the app store offers tons of stupid apps, and bans all the good apps. fuck the app store.

you can't multitask. why do I want a computer that doesn't multitask?

alright cool. I spend 500 dollars for this shiny piece of apple hardware. then 100 dollars for a keyboard addon. 50 dollars for a video out addon. 50 dollars for USB addons. basically that's a lot of unnecessary money to be spent on something I could get for much less.

it doesn't have a built in camera. I would assume people buying this would want to use some sort of video chat or something. gg apple.

it's hd, but not widescreen.

I do see why people will by it. stupid consumerists and apple fanatics.

Multitasking is something I think willcome very soon as its rumored to be in the next iPhone OS update, and flash support is an adobe issue, it'll be here shortly so w/e.
I don't think anyone is claiming that its some kind of bargain with all the bells and whistles of a laptop, its an interface for the content that apple is offering through their app/video/audio/etc stores which apparently a lot of people want regardless of how stupid you think it is.

So you don't want one. If that's your point, don't get one. I don't want a truck, does that make trucks useless?

I think it is something that is being hyped up by materialistic consumers and apple, and will end up losing them money in the long run.

also dude you can't compare something that is essential transportation to an unessential piece of technology.

I don't think so tbh. Frankly this is the direction personal computing is moving. The whole idea of a monolithic PC with a mouse and keyboard is not here to stay and with media companies moving toward digital distribution, things like the ipad and other personal media players are going to step in and fill the role of facilitating this. People would rather read their digital subscriptions to things like newspapers through things like the ipad rather than a laptop, same goes for movies and shit. Why carry around a netbook and external hardrive when you can have a tablet and most of the stuff you want can be streamed to it over the net?

That's the direction of media distribution and that's the use of the ipad. That's my point with the truck analogy. Trucks have lots of uses, none of them are relevant to me so I don't buy one. Its the same with the ipad, I don't buy any of that shit, but I'm not gonna deny an entire market exists because its not relevant to me.

My entire point is that its not useless and theres no mystery why it exists: its a part of apple's digital media distribution model.

What he means is that you, and probably a lot of other people in this topic, aren't part of the intended audience of the ipad, just like how we're not what the truck companies cater to. The usefulness of an object is always relative.

I don't think anyone is complaining that they don't belong to the iPad's target audience as much that they're complaining that it doesn't live up to its purpose. The point of the iPad is not to be a platform for Apple's media, it's supposed to be a hybrid between smartphones and laptops; a netbook killer. You're supposed to be able to use this thing for day to day computer tasks, so I think people were pretty disappointed when it turned out to be a big iPod - literally. It runs on the same OS, uses the same applications and has next to no added functionality whatsoever except for maybe the ability to scale iPod applications to suit its screen.

I would've wanted to see at least some basic peripherals like a camera, CD drive, USB port, SD slot, HDMI port and a network port. Software-wise it would've been nice with an OS that would actually give it the funcitonality and usefulness of a computer instead of an iPod, Flash, multitasking and the ability to be able to install third party applications without having to go through the App Store.

I think it's a useless device that only Apple nuts are going to buy and enjoy.
