I got the game in yesterday, and I'm only like two hours or so into it, but I'm really enjoying it. I've read a lot of "so bad it's good" on forums, and I don't really think that applies. It's not SO BAD. It's just unconventional. A lot of the cutscenes are very funny (the biscuit scene tops my list at the moment), and the game as a whole doesn't take itself too seriously, but it honestly has some really great moments. And the story is developing really nicely, I'm really interested in how it unravels. Anyone else pick this up yet? I'm having a great time with it so far.

edit: Haha, yeah, I read that IGN review. Complete morons. Also, [ur=http://www.destructoid.com/deadly-premonition-is-blatantly-better-than-heavy-rain-165288.phtmll]this[/url] is a great read. http://www.destructoid.com/deadly-premonition-is-blatantly-better-than-heavy-rain-165288.phtml

i was checking out like 20 story cutscenes from youtube and from what i can tell you are pretty much spot-on about this game. the two linked youtubes gives sort of XD FUNNY - image of the whole game and that's sort of false!

the dialogue is actually pretty well-written for a game that looks like something Capcom churn out regulary for PS2! it didn't really feel like something some japanese people have wrote or then the translators did a good job on it and the guys know their america heh. the voice acting is good and it ensures that the experience is pretty much intense and it just grows as the story progresses. like my little brother said, the shooter parts look awful but you go through that shit even at this age just because you are intrgued of what happens next in the story.

like hundley said, the team has put a whole lot of work and thinking to the visual presentation and it's neat how much they have got out from such little animation selection and just CAMERA ANGLES. it looks bit clumsy at first but once you get used to it it's pretty fucking natural!! and i don't think this is easy at all to pull out in resident evil/silent hill - type of games if you don't understand anything about cutscene directing at all, not to mention SMALL BUDGET + TEAM. there's not much music in the game and interestingly it's semi-cheesy (the music rule ok!!) but it's being used effeciently so that doesn't really bother at all.

--

basically this is like the only few games i have felt that is worth the purchase and commitment since it seems more about honest presentation of ideas rather than trying to fucking sell you something. the game doesn't even really do anything amazing or out of league but compared to everything else it seems BRILLIANT, especially script and dialogue is pretty mature/well-though out for a game. and that tells a lot about games in general!! Heavy Rain's first impression isn't nearly as impressive because it seems like a hollywood movie thriller turned out into a... movie except with game graphics and dancing stage on controller lol. VANILLA SKY MINORITY REPORT dance-along edition now out on stores.

i sort of feel like purchasing the game directly from the company just to support these guys, i wish i had xbox 360 now... :(

this game is fantastic.  York feels more like a buddy than a character.

Yeah, totally awesome. I beat the game like two weeks ago and loved every minute of it. My friend is borrowing it now and he's having the greatest time playing it.

Great game!

I was thinking about picking up this game, because the buzz is really ... strange. Hearing about its sales performance makes it even more compelling.

It's great to see Ignition actually publishing a hit. They've taken some risks publishing a lot of games that I doubt sold very well, especially on DS. They almost remind me of Lion's Gate or something.

smell my dung you pit person. this is cool because it's a good game made by cool people not because of 'strange' buzz and sales.

the fact it is selling so well is great because it means these guys might get to make another game and it might be another nutter like this.

i haven't played deadly premonition yet but i am on the verge of buying another xbox so i can.

what i like about this game is that the developers were absolutely unafraid to fuck up. they really just made the game they wanted to make and it's a damn shame that most of the attention this game is getting is some sort of bullshit atrocity tourism where neckbeardos like to make fun of it but secretly wish that it was resident evil 4 instead

that and i spotted a pillows reference so it's cool by me

I bought this game a couple of days ago. I think it was the same day I made that post!

I really like it. I generally agree with Pasty - the developers really aren't ashamed of anything. It's really wierd; I just didn't know what to think when the character has a long dialog with himself about an old movie while driving around, spouting all sorts of trivia and stuff ... and then reveals at the end that he hasn't actually watched it. It's like someone was reading the Wikipedia article out loud to me.

It's not really up to the level of polish that a lot of gamers expect these days, but I find that the overall creativity of the game makes up for that. I have a lot of fun while playing it. It's good evidence of the assertion that all the stuff video game reviewers focus on - physics engines, gun "feel", etc as they compare innumerable mass-produced, nearly-identical shooters - aren't really as important as publishers pretend they are.

I bought this game yesterday after pining for it for quite awhile (had to play Red Dead and Alan Wake first) and I have already logged 8 hours into it. And the time literally flies by when you get into it, this game is amazing. As a horror survival fan, and a fan of classic Sierra Adventure PC games like King's Quest and Police Quest, I very much enjoy walking around and exploring, solving puzzles, sub par graphics and having a fairly minimal amount of combat. I like storylines! This game is all those things, I love the free roam concept and quirky characters and side quests, I like not spending the entirety of the game fighting, I like feeling like I am actually doing something, as opposed to just shooting everything that moves. It's a nice departure. And at $19.99, it was an acceptable risk to buy this game, and I'm glad I did cause it is worth every penny (Unlike that overly priced Alan Wake junk, I was not a fan, DP is so much better!). It really frustrates me to read the reviews on this game, they are so negative, it's like the reviewers didn't even give it a chance before bashing it's (admittedly) strange controls, less than stellar graphics and voice acting/storyline. As for the controls, they can be changed in the options menu, which helps quite a bit if your used to a different configuration...and why do the graphics need to be stunningly lifelike for me to enjoy a game, does seeing the characters pores really make a difference? Like I said before, I grew up in the age of Sierra and Lucas Arts (Grim Fandango!! :worship:) and believe me, nobody was complaining about the quality of graphics on classic games like those. Games even BETTER than alot of modern games (I may be biased a little bit, but still). And as for the dialogue, it is NOT that bad, some of the videos make it look completely ridiculous, but thats because they only show the ridiculous parts, most of it is actually really good and who is really gonna take a guy who talks to his other personality and sees stuff in coffee seriously, the developers obviously didn't, and thats the charm of it. To sum it up, I guess if you have an attention span greater than that of a gnat, you would most likely enjoy this game, despite the few flaws it actually has.

I just read this thread and none of the youtubes are working anymore. but from the two trailers I found, yeah there's definitely a lot of Lynch stuff in there but it's all like inconsequential. well, maybe not inconsequential, but not LYNCHIAN like I was expecting from some of the posts in this thread. it's more just references to Lynch films with none of lynch's style and none of the feelings or sensations lynch's films give the viewer. like the one scene was essentially set in the FBI office of Twin Peaks, and then there was the midigets in the red velvet room and the singing lady and the winding rural road. loads of references but none of the effect! am I right did anyone get this game.

just wanted to say that this game is one of the few next gen games worth getting. it's got some great characters in it, the story keeps you going, music is really worht listening to, and it's honestly an enjoyable experience you won't find anywere else. as long as you not a dick about graphics.

Why do you call it next gen
These systems have been out 4-5 years.

Oh I'm fully aware of that, I just like calling it next gen because it makes it sound more fancy than it really is.

plus I've only had my 360 for a few years so it's still next gen...... to me.

Deadly Premonition got a UK release date. September 17th 2010. I am extremely excited. I've got a premonition of my own. My premonition is that this game is going to be good.

i borrowed deadly premonition from a friend and started playing it a few days ago. the storytelling and general presentation of the game is really outstanding but the GAME elements of it are really goddamn awful. it's in the ballpark of what i was hoping for, really. the game is less WEIRD in that lynch way than i had expected, but thus far the characters are really good. york is a really great character, maybe the best videogame character i've ever seen. they don't write him as YOUR GAME AVATAR but instead write him as YOUR FRIEND. it's an extremely interesting and well-executed idea they ran with there and it's really the driving force behind the game. i find myself just fucking around trying to get him to SAY MORE STUFF which i very rarely do with videogame characters, particularly main protagonists. i'm still early in the game, but i'm GENUINELY interested in the character and where they take him.

unfortunately everything else in the game is pretty goddamn awful, to the point where the game is a bit of a chore to play despite its spectacular high points. the gameplay is awful, the shameless silent hill 2 ripoff segments are grueling and uninteresting(never liked that kind of thing anyway), and the other incidental non-story stuff you can choose to do around the game a complete waste of time. i can see how they felt obligated to put all this stupid FILLER in the game since the story works fundamentally better as an open-world sandbox game and they needed to give the player room to lead york all over the place to investigate and generally irritate/offend the townsfolk. but there are a lot of gaps between the actual content and the filler content(or they make the actual content a bit difficult to find) and you spend an inordinate amount of time just not having very much fun. also QUICK-TIME EVENTS URGH. WHY DO THEY STILL DO THIS???

basically this game would be perfect as an adventure game. i am early in it so maybe i am not fully grasping how everything works, but there's a lot of dead weight in this game that takes away from its strengths. still, it's definitely worth playing. the game is actually deserving of the hype it's generated.

i've heard that alot of the side-quests are really good, though. like you get to interact with the other characters and they give you things to do. i know the gameplay will be bad but i don't really care about that. the one part i can see annoying me is the long dark dank dungeons, which i watched a video of and they don't look fun but that's okay. i'll plough through to see more scenes about things like the 'sinner's sandwich'

i've done a few of these and the ones i've played aren't really special. i've just found fetch quests thus far, although i'm figuring that there are some good ones in this game. i've found just wandering around bothering people to be a lot more fun than the quests themselves.

i kinda thought this would be the case for me but i found it a bit more tiresome than i had expected. it kinda touches the outer limits of what i'm willing to play for long periods of time for some later reward, and i have heard it does get more annoying/intrusive later on. early on i was actually tempted to just give up all together but i've been able to stick with it.

just a warning more than anything else. it really disrupts the flow of the game and makes the game a lot less fun than it probably could have been. it has the story to be the sort of game that i just can't put down, but all the extra rubbish makes it really hard for me to play for long periods of time.
