so uh on another forum I heard about these and they're basically WEIRDEST THING EVER

I'll just copy and paste

Quote
With the arrival of video and video cassettes during 1980s In Ghana (West Africa) a small-scale film distribution / mobile Cinema was created.

This small size mobile " Cinema " operators were equipped with a television a Video and some times with a small portable generator and were moving from town to town from village to village operating and showing their films! (During the day inside social clubs or houses and during the night in the open air)

In order to attract more customers and in order to advertise their mission and business the need of huge posters was created and born!

Talented artists after viewing the film were creating large size posters using oil paint on canvas!

The artist had the freedom to add or change scenes seen or not seen in the film in order to make the poster more attractive! (This is the reason that this hand painted posters are more interesting as ART than the normal posters since each of this hand painted poster is UNIQUE! and except the film content it also express the artist him self!)

all of these are like either the goofiest or the creepiest things I've ever seen or both, when you get into the 80's horror movies it gets really strange. To start here are some posters on Ebay for some pretty recent films because I think it demonstrates the ALTERNATE UNIVERSE vibe I get from these things

the effect of the horror-oriented posters might be lost a little if you've ever seen Bollywood posters for horror films before. There's a little overlap in the style but they're still pretty bizarre. There's a James Bond poster that literally makes no sense (I think it mentioned that many of the artists never even saw the films in the first place)

Edit: There's a book with like 300 of these but I think there's proportionally a lot of generic kung fu movies and stuff

oh yeah I dunno if I posted these in what's on your mind? but these are in the same spirit

http://englishrussia.com/?p=897

http://www.designboom.com/contemporary/handpainted.html

http://www.eatliver.com/i.php?n=5322

but I dunno it's still a pretty bad imitation the ghana ones have this way of they're good enough at texture so that people look like they're made of FLESH but everything else is very wrong

it also reminds me of like maybe their movie art is stuck in the 1950s because I always felt the realistic 50s style would just completely fall apart if you tried to do a Friday the 13th etc (lol trying to relate it to uncanny valley because I love the uncanny valley) but yeah that doesn't completely explain it anyway (it's not politically incorrect to say they're stuck in the 50s right because this is sort of a real thing some countries are still just getting DISCO now right)

Edit: btw if surfing the belarusian posters keep an eye out for Kill Bill. It's there... sort of

Edit: The Poltergeist poster also reminds me of quissential 50s ford advertisement of an idyllic scene of some family on holiday in their shiny new automobile but then OH SHIT giant floating chainsaw

like one of these http://s273.photobucket.com/albums/jj218/lowtechmarc/ad_49sled.jpg

Edit: You can buy some of these. Like every one in the first post

ok the bond poster is a million times more confusing to me now because they'd obviously seen the real poster, the poses are pretty much spot on

http://rentmovie.com/movie-posters/the-spy-who-loved-me.jpg

and there is some groovy graphics going on with the car suggestion of speed and whatnot, but still what the hell. I very badly want to believe it's some intentional fucking-up of the original hollywood poster like the ones I've seen by Polish artists

Edit: oh god like 100 more posters on this site http://www.beprimitive.com/press/press_ghana_posters.html lots of posters I haven't seen anywhere else, and some really recent stuff like War with Jet Li is the newest one I saw. There's a 300 poster too lol. I think there are some new artists in this set too, the styles look different

Edit: christ more like 300 on that page

Edit: for some reason Ghanians really like the movie Deadly Prey

Edit: There's a couple of Indian titles here I guess Indian movies are popular in Africa

Edit: The Brain Dead/Dead Alive poster is so close yet so far
