I have no idea really but wasn't this what Big Trouble in Little China was about
now that I think of it, yeah, kind of. Jack Burton is this gung-ho womanizing American trucker, representing the american action hero, but he's teamed up with and fighting against a million mystical asian martial arts stereotypes, so despite all of that charisma, he's essentially useless to the team. one scene comes to mind, where he runs into a room full of the evil fighters, hollers and fires his sub machine gun into the ceiling. a piece of stone falls and knocks him out and the asian good guys run in and start kicking ass. i think the idea was to throw a "Fool" character right into the middle of a humorless asian martial arts environment. Jack does end up killing Lo Pan, however, in what is possibly one of the most anti-climactic final battles ever. that's what i love about john carpenter, particularly this movie, The Thing, and Escape from New York. he took a lot of the hero character stereotypes and very consciously exaggerated them while a lot of people were trying to take action films seriously.
