I hit a medium-large size dog last night on my way back into town from Savannah.  Had me pretty shook up for a couple minutes.

I'm telling PETA on you. :fogetlaugh:

yeah it was this dark and narrow alternate state route, and i vaguely saw a dark shape ahead of the lit road.  it was one of those things where i second guessed, believed i was seeing things.  then my headlamps reached it, and i startled, but it was all too late and there was this estimated 125 lb dog that went thwack against my bumper and that was the end of it.
keep posting...

Of the incident, or the dog? *Hopes it was just stunned* And are we so certain that public shaming isn't a good deterrent in some cases- or that we should bother caring about such things?

I agree, people who commit crimes should be publicly shamed.

Unlike some people I'm trying to be a tad serious here. I'll admit things may go overboard sometimes, but might there be a viable place for internet vigilantism in our society?

no because internet vigilantes are almost exclusively worse human beings than the people they're shaming.

shaming people brands them with a taint that will last a while and will be difficult to remove. this will more likely result in them getting pissed off and comming to terms with it, becoming repeat offenders because they are already known as a WHATEVER, and it is so hard to remove such a taint on reputation.
publicly shaming people is a dumb thing to do, and ruins their lives and greatly reduces their chance of rehabilitation.

you don't want to remove it, you just want to separate it so it makes your ego bigger.

How so? It's just that there are a lot of them so all so there's a lot of combined, self-reinforcing hatred going on. In real life  they're just like you. They're like velfarre.

internet vigilantism has always struck me as incredibly insincere, so while I wouldn't say that they're necessarily worse human beings than the ones they are persecuting (at least not in every case), I would argue that they're doing it more for internet high-five/feeling of self-righteousness than to, say, raise awareness of animal cruelty or whatever.  at the end of the day they aren't doing anything important or worthwhile.

I mean I suppose INTERNET SLEUTHING for the sake of giving information to the police is great but 4chan from what I understand always takes it a step too far.

i don't think it's great at all, especially for something like this.  maybe if it was a murder or kidnapping or something like that but animal cruelty is way down on the list for things that are worth doing this for.  especially because uh the internet isn't exactly professional about it!  the police or whoever can internet detective too, and they aren't going to find someone who potentially is the wrong person then start harassing and threatening them AND THEIR FRIENDS before they're even sure they've got the chick.  there's nothing great about them, and it's no good encouraging them by suggesting anything they do is good in any way.
