I agree with a lot of what has been said so far, but don't become discouraged with your goal, just find a different way to approach it. For one, Square is a very well-known video game developer and wouldn't take just anyone who wanted a job, especially if you are just displaying your translated version of an indie game made in RM2k3. If you're truly interested, you have to put yourself in their shoes and understand that you have to build yourself a solid background before they would even consider hiring you. What jobs or opportunities have you taken to translate from Japanese to English or even vice versa? The more experience you have, the more qualified you are. Realistically, I suggest that you start off a little less ambitiously and focus on localization with lesser-known developers first, as your chances with them are much greater and it gives you some experience that is neccessary if you want to think big. Seriously though, you could even take any job that offers an opportunity to translate the language, even with software or video games being more preferable, every opportunity looks good for you.

Yeah man definitely DON'T GIVE UP.  Just make sure to approach things realistically and with a business attitude in mind.  And remember it's not just a business attitude, it's a very Japanese business attitude.  Just make sure you know what to expect, that thread I linked to and another thread on that forum that I'm sure you can find if you search for this career forum have a lot of information from people who are familiar with it that can help you prepare.  Even if you don't get a single interview, you can at least begin networking.

why exactly do you even stick around

The odd RM game that actually gets shown here. Just this last week I started playing the full version of Legionwood and it's awesome as hell. You'll notice I don't post very often, but I am actually here every single day looking thru all the new posts hopeing for something to play.
Peace and Love

The thing about lang-8 caught my eye, I hadn't heard of it but now I think I might try it out as I relearn the German I forgot.
