so me and my buddies have been throwing around the idea of going on a backpacking trip through europe this summer. was wondering if anyone around here has had similar experiences/has any helpful tips about going on such a trip...

Mainly i'm trying to figure out expenses. I figure 1000 for round trip flight if I buy early. from there I'm thinking that the eurorail pass is going to be my best bet as far as intercountry transport. I can sleep on the trains, they're reliable, etc. Anyone have any better ideas?

Food and lodging is where i'll be able to save the most moneys i'm thinking. Probably just doing the hostel thing, with some camping maybe, which after a little research doesn't sound like too terrible an option. Apparently most major Euro cities have some sort of camping within the city limits... But not too sure. This area in particular I would like to hear of some past experiences if you guys have done anything like this. In addition we know some people in various countries... When in the UK we will have free lodging, i think possibly france too? So that should help save some cash as well.

And food. I will be eating SO POOR. just the bear minimum. i'm going to also do my best to really cut back on alcohol/drug expenses. Probably go to a club or two but really try to limit the nights im consuming substances.... Also probably a hooker in Amsterdam

so. any advice? this was posted HASTILY so please forgive that but i think yall get da jist

this comment is way out of line, beasley. don't fly off the handle.

I get why you want to save money on lodging which is fine, but I wouldn't skimp if you want to get the most out of it. after a while a decent bed and a shower start seeming like luxuries. and definitely don't skimp on the food, at least not all the time. you're gonna be moving around a lot so you gotta eat well, and you definitely don't want to miss all the fantastic food in these places or you're sorta wasting your trip

then again my reasons for wanting to backpack through Europe might different from your own. I have no empathic understanding of the reasons why most people wanna do it (europeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee absinthe drinking yeahh I can be a stupid awful white suburban bourgeois fat dumb baby here and only those facebook friends who browse the thousands of worthless photos taken inside cookie-cutter clubs you could find in the states and near popular tourist destinations will ever know!) so my advice might not be what you're looking for I dunno

I finish my final 6 month training program with the US Navy next year, followed by 30 days leave, at which point I've been thinking about a European excursion as well.  I just don't know how to go about it.  I'm inclined to just wing it.  I hear all about the great European rail system.  Can you get a short-term train pass and be on your merry way as a tourist in Europe?  How does the hostel system work and what does it cost?  I want to take a minimalist off-the-beaten path approach to any place I visit.  I really need some first-hand insight on this, as I'm sure Beasley does.  Maybe all these questions defeat the purpose of "just winging it."  I may just show up with some bare essentials and my return flight ticket and see what happens.
keep posting...

I haven't really done it that much, but staying in a hostel is a pretty good way to meet people, especially if you're travelling alone. It usually costs around 10-20 euros per night for a dormitory bed (more for private rooms etc), so basically you're sleeping in the same room with strangers (mostly backpackers) and sharing the same bathroom. Often they have lockers for your stuff, depends. Sometimes you'll have to pay extra if you don't have your own linen. It's also possible to stay for free via hospitality exchange sites if you make the effort and aren't travelling with too many people (max 2 imo). It's not so much a free hostel, it's more like just staying over at your friends place, but that way it's more fun anyways. And you could do volunteer work like WWOOF where you work for food/accomodation in organic farms if you're into that hippie backpacker stuff.

I guess interrail pass is good if you're going to be moving constantly, otherwise it might be a waste of money. I think a month pass is like 500 euros or something? For expenses basically just work out how much are you going to spend daily? 20 euros for a place to stay, 10-20 euros for food etc is around 1000 euros per month. Plus whatever you need for travelling. Buses are pretty cheap. Or you could be a real hippie backpacker again and hitchhike. Or do like this canadian guy I met who travelled all around europe with a bicycle

For next summer I'm thinking about going to eastern europe. Yay

Don't forget the cost of travelling around where ever you're staying. If you're planning on going to London, the day passes are £10 which is about $16 which sounds like it'll be more than your accommodation.

Biking across Europe is probably the best idea...
