Eating w/chopsticks isn't really a novelty 'round here, it's pretty much standard fare when eating at asian joints. Asking for forks in a lot of those places that aren't like MR CHIN'S GREASY MSG BUFFET is kinda weird. Do you guys use forks at sushi bars or pho places too??

Yeah but I know that in a lot of places (absolutely where I live) all Chinese places are shitty buffets.

If all you want is to get to your cha siu as soon as possible, you can ask for a fork. But really, most Asian food is specifically designed with chopsticks in mind. I mean, you tell me how to get a piece of kitsune out of a soup bowl with a fork. It's worth learning how to use them and they're pretty efficient once you do.

It's pretty standard fair in the UK to receive a fork/spoon as well as chopsticks in Chinese restaurants (in the restaurants I've been in, at any rate). You never have to "ask" for them, whatsoever. In fact, in greasy chinese buffets sometimes you have to ask for chopsticks.

Sushi places are different, true. I don't eat sushi with a fork, so maybe there's a little hypocrisy here? Or, to be fair, eating sushi is a little more of a "special" thing here still, as the ratio of Chinese restaurants in comparison to sushi bars is like ten to one (possibly even more).

Somebody help me, I just want to play System Shock 2. I downloaded it and it has a bunch of mods which I'm excited for but the fuckin game won't install. I get errors about Win16 subsystem, and I found a site with a patch/workaround (replacing the wow32.dll) but I can't get it to fucking work. I feel like there was a SystemShock2 folder/zip on the happyzoo or something at some point... a copy that you could just RUN and it'd work, no installing or anything. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, maybe was SS1, I dunno. I really want to play SS2 though ARGH

a lot of chinese places in the eastern states give you forks too. the places that try to be authentic (eg pho, most sushi) tend to only put out chopsticks unless they get a reservation like robertson party of 8

it kinda is a novelty considering the americaness of the typical chinese place. "chinky" is slang for chinese food in britain tho so

fun fact: chopsticks aren't very popular in thailand so using the chopsticks for thai food is unusual and a great thing to bring up during a hot dinner date to show how worldly you are.

This is true. The same kind of people who say "chinky" also say things like "paki-shop" for corner shops owned by Asian people. It isn't like ACCEPTABLE and shit, but if you go to council estates you still hear those terms in use quite a lot even today.

we had a bbq round a friend's house earlier, and one of her flatmates (whom we all dislike) was using terms like paki, chinky, ching-chong etc, and everytime he said one, the room just went silent and we told him off. He even managed to point at a drunk/drugged up hobo... whilst holding a knife, leading to arguements. Silly bugger.

also my mum uses those kinda terms, which i find really unacceptable and tell her off EVERY TIME, and then she's like 'ok asian people then' in a kinda patronising/childish way. Kinda funny though, my parents are racist, yet the majority of my friends are non-english (and also, bar a few exceptions, i find english girls remarkably unattractive, hmm...)

EDIT: I also remember a few years ago having a go at my sri-lankan buddie, as after a chinsese guy ran past at a train station, he yelled like 'RUN CHING CHONG CHINAMAN', for no reason at all. Douche. Though his dad got like 0.09% of the votes at the last sri lankan election, so really lol, maybe you shouldn't help design the election posters next time bro.
