has anyone here read machiaveli? I keep seeing quotes and a guy I work with thats ex marine core was telling me to read the art of war. I really don't want to though unless theres anything to it, machiaveli seems like a crock of shit. Like an angry dude that thought varying degrees of violence were an only alternative to conflict. The key is to use the least amount of violence, still killing massive amounts of people but not as massive as you could or could be necessary.

well I dunno now. From the way he explained it to me I guess it was given from a wholly military perspective. As in taking over an enemy with as few casualties as possible? After reading the wiki a lil bit it describes him as a humanist but still his writings seem kind of biased in the viewpoint of the ruling class an monarchy but maybe thats just a product of his time? Also see references to revolution and the lower class, maybe he wasn't all that bad?

idk about the art of war but he's better known for the prince. only art of war i heard of before now was the sun tzu one. according to bertrand russell, the prince was essentially a satire of the policy of those in power at the time, partly designed to flatter them into giving him money on account of them not being hugely perceptive readers. he wrote a work around the same time that basically contradicted it entirely and touted the benefits of republics. my guess would be don't read it unless you really like history but i didn't read it either.

I bought LA Noire but I haven't taken the wrapping off the box and I won't until a certain project is at version 1.0.

AFAIK, THe Art of War is by Sun Tzu and The Prince is by Machiavelli.

The art of war is a pretty good coffeetable/bathroom book but I wouldn't take it too seriously. Its fun to quote from occasionally but its pretty irrelevent imo. Get a good book on chess and play that a lot instead if you're into that stuff so you can be one of those "chess explains life" people.

Met a guy named "Prem" - "love' in Hindi. He embodies his name.

I was on reddit and saw a link called "This is a clip about Dilbert.  I... I don't even..." I watched about 30 seconds of it and thought "I would not be surprised if Chef made this" and lo and behold

Yeah, Machiavelli is pretty interesting. I wouldn't describe it as a 'crock of shit' though hehe, not all 'The Prince' is about physical conflict by any means. It's about being a successful leader, from becoming to ending, and the concepts of different types of state. It isn't really a guide to fucking with your enemies in any concrete sense, unless you can use the examples as metaphors that apply to you and the guy you don't like at the water cooler.

Don't just read 'The Prince' though - like even my dad has read that, and he hates books that aren't about maths or templar knights, so there's a good chance most of the dudes you don't like have read it too. Try Machiavelli's Discourses in addition to this if you want some subversive Renaissance thinking.

I mean anything by the dude is mostly useful in contrast to dominant theories of Western/Northern Kingship during the period - the ideas of divine mandate and rightful rulers. Renaissance Italian thinking on the topic shows leadership as something that can be won and taken, and the "rightful" leader being the one who is able to lead. Fuck, if this topic interests anyone then pretty much all of Shakespeare's History plays, Richard II - Henry VI (inclusive to king's reign chronology, not when they were written) at any rate, are about this topic. WHO IS THE RIGHTFUL LEADER AND HOW IS THEY MAINTAIN IT!?

No way, without Sun Tzu I wouldn't know such amazing advice like "ATTACK WHEN YOUR ENEMY IS WEAKEST" and "PUT YOURSELF IN A POSITION WHERE DEFEAT IS IMPOSSIBLE". Before that I was totally leading my troops against overwhelming odds and trying to fight the strongest people myself. Now I just pick on people shorter than me and really elderly people. THANK YOU SUN TZU!!

I'm not really interested in learning how to conquor anyone just doing some philosophical reading I guess. The only reason Machiavelli even came into context is we were in a hotel in singapore and were all really drunk and after some drawn out discussion about my criticism of the military and government and though being a smart kid I'm pretty ignorant in the matters of warfare and international conflict. Dude told me I should read Machiavelli and the Art of War (this could have been a reference to Sun Tzu and the prince but I can't remember) said it was required reading for him in the military and it really made him think or something like that. I pretty much put it in the back of my head until I watched Jet Li's Hero the other night which was a friggin terrible movie but it had some quotes from the prince that seemed pretty inane bullshit to me. generally "a wise leader is one willing to do what is considered evil upon the few for the good of the many" and I was wondering if machiavelli was that stupid or if whoever produced that movie was dumb as shit and put the quote out of context. The guy who recommended it to me is very very intelligent if a bit too traditional thinker for my tastes. Then I figured I could read machiavelli to find out but I wanted to know if it would be intellectually relevant to this time period or not and if I'd get anything out of it.

I wanted to get the manifesto when I went home and was looking for some other learnin', might make a topic bout it later when I get home if I'm not too busy and/or high.
