Checked some of those Gorillaz tracks and not buying it, sorry. Sounds like all the inventiveness that makes me smile on Demon Days is gone. They've got some of that Gorillaz aesthetic going with the naivism and distorted vocal tracks etc. coupled with more trendy purely retro sounds, and then bunch of trademark Damon Albarn melodies and pop harmonies (he probably never runs out of those) but nothing is made of them and everything feels very tired and uninspired.

Shad sounds good, have to listen some more.

since everyone is deadbeat/person who like the same music here's my sisters top 10 she still listens to lots of new stuff.

the genre tags make me wish I didn't look.................what do you guys think about salem? if I had to guess what the next big thing will be I'd guess this. not necessarily this exact kind of music but like sleazy-chic, the aesthetic of self-destruction and cultural decay. we should all probably look like them, all this garbage about being cultured and ok with life is just a front partially inflicted upon us by our market-driven society partially 90s nostalgia edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2sOQedggAc&feature=related
Salem is kinda good and kinda awful IMO. I feel like a lot of it is all form and no content, plus I kinda find the aesthetic of self-destruction in the face of cultural decay a little masturbatory and complicit. It doesn't even have the ambition of negation like Noise-genres do, it's just sorta giving up and I can't help asking myself "why care about what people who clearly don't give a fuck have to say?"

otoh i like whenusleep and trapdoor cuz theyre pretty catchy

Edit: i want to hear someone say "chillwave" irl so i can puke in their face

also that gorillaz album is a big ol' NOPE for me, it'd be pretty hard to come up with something more boring than damon albarn fucking around on an iPad. The novelty of the iPad gimmick vanishes as soon as you think about it for longer than maybe a couple seconds

these guys have made albums in 2010 that i really liked:

salem: i think theres been enough discussion on this but yeah

houses: seriously, get their album. it is fantastic. really chill loops and samples with some cool beats and good atmosphere
small black: dankwave and 80's synth pop.
benoit pioulard: full of reverb and interesting sounds, this guy is really fascinated with tape decay and uses it in a pretty nice way
sharon van etten: lovely singer/songwriter stuff. really nice voice.
ariel pink's haunted graffiti: well established uh OUTSIDER music i guess. new album is really good.
yellow swans: cool noise/drone stuff.
twin shadow: dreamy pop stuff. i'm pretty gay for this sort of stuff.
titus andronicus: springsteen inspired indie rock. very catchy, very good.
beach house: more dreamy pop stuff. still good.
how to dress well: r'n'b inspired, but executed with a very lo-fi/chillwave mindset
beach fossils: surf rock stuff, similar to like wavves and stuff. very good. see also: surf city.

yeah pretty PITCHFORK or whatever and there's a ton more i just can't remember. i might come back to this later.

I brought the Wyatt, Atzmon and Stephenson album a couple months ago because 1. Robert Wyatt is the best songwriter who has ever lived and 2.It's getting perfect reviews allround BUT I seemed to have got a factory misprint or something as when I play it, its like some generic/vaguely cool triphop album, and it annoys me. I dont want to buy another copy of the album incase i get the same mistake, but I won't take it back because it's a factory error and could be worth dubloons in the future. And I've never gotten round to downloading it (lazy).
It's annoying as Wyatt's 'Comicopera' was BY FAR the best album released in 2007. Kinda jazzy songsmithery verging on prog in the later parts but with a maturity that comes from being like the first wheelchair-bound person in rock music in the 70's, and key instigator in the english psychedelic scene in the 60's

2010  basically sucked a super lot but here were a few good releases

Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis (Best of this year imo)
Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here
Oceansize - Self Preserved While the Bodies Float Up
Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit (sucks compared to ashes against the grain tho)
The Cat Empire - Cinema

and that's all i can think of.  This year sucked basically.   Biggest dissapointment was the new Massive Attack and the new Gorillaz

I really enjoyed the Tron Legacy soundtrack from Daft Punk. One of the best movie soundtracks ever composed.

this year in guitars

how abouta mixtape dicko
masturbatory and complicit
doesn't this describe lots of stuff though. the thing about salem is they're conscious of it and just kinda rolling around in their slop. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing

their gucci mane remixes are pretty good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2XbKX0GCOM

I dunno sounds terrible from the beginning to me. I haven't listened to it yet but that's what makes me not wanna.

Thx didn't know new Agalloch came out.

K, listened to some of it.  I like it.  I haven't heard the whole thing through yet.  The Mantle is my favorite album of theirs.

yeah i mean the only reason i really subject them to that criticism is probably because of the HYPE and my tendency to be a contrarian shithead

in the end though I'm listening to them pretty regularly over the past like month so idk

ok Farren. Kanye sucks. It's like OK for DRUNK NIGHT CLUB MUSICS because you're too busy grinding against some girl to care what's going over the beat, but as far as appreciating music goes, he sucks.

I dunno, I like him. He produces his own stuff I think and can write pretty well. I don't think he's the best but he's real good imo. And that song is awesome, THE HORNS I LOVE THE HORNS

I don't know why but for the last 6 months I've listened to a lot of Kanye West on and off. I pretty much hate him. I might be done with that now, but I don't know. I get heavily into shitty rappers from time to time.

I've been listening to a lot of electronic music from the same kind of area for about the same length of time, too. It's starting to get a bit samey but I don't know what else to look for at the moment because I don't really get into a lot of music. I've got blocks up about certain kinds of music, that they are just not for me. Maybe I should break some of those walls down. It's been a slow and not awful but creeping realisation than I've never been as open minded and into stuff as I'd maybe like to think. That's okay though, I know enough to at least not outright judge everything now.

not really. his older albums are pretty great! they go down as pop/rap classics, and important pieces of this decades canon. seriously.

that being said, what hes put out over the past couple years has been hit or miss. 808s was pretty much garbage, and MBDTF is questionable. I like it, but its over rated. it lacks the soul that permeated his earlier work, made it feel so alive.

but you have to give west credit, he is always honest. his work is always a sort of reflection of his mental state... I think thats really important for a musician, an admirable trait.. and how he manages to stay relevant. his music is a like a little window into his psyche...

the thing is, i don't think i like what i see in him in mbdtf... a crazed ego maniac. but at least he acknowledges its all in his head, its all a fantasy. well see where he goes from here. WATCH THE THRONE

ok honestly im kanye stanning hardf right now but i just wanted to devils advocate for a second HA

That's all well and good if the artist is an interesting person or has interesting things to say, but other than the frequent clever rhyme(he's good at that) Kanye west is boring as fuck

Yeah, I mean you could say that Ke$ha's music--not that she does it herself--reflects her pretty well too (LET'S FUCK AND GET DRUNK).
