I thought the commercial was dumb because it was awkward. Which is what you get when you throw in hammy sexual innuendo into a commercial for a plumbing product. This the same reason you guys thought it was dumb right? right?

re: that stupid commercial (which i would argue is only more stupid than other commercials in so far as it is openly using sex as a commodity rather than insinuating it through various cultural signifiers):
"by transforming 'class' in to 'mass', business hoped to create an 'individual' who could locate his needs and frustrations in terms of the consumption of good rather than the quality and content of his life (work)," the advertising industrying 'increasingly offerered mass-produced solutions to 'instinctive' strivings ... mass produced visions of individualism by which people could extricate themselves from the mass.'

also, do you think that the people who were paid a lot of money to make that commercial didn't realize that it would be controversial?  that people would get upset and yell 'think of the children' or 'think of the patriarchy' and then proceed to share their trash pile with other people on bulletin boards and facebook?  i'd say that commercial is working directly as intended.

actually based on some of the ads i've seen come out and some of the responses from people and companies and the admakers, i really DON'T find it hard to believe that they aren't expecting this stuff.  because they literally don't see what's wrong with it.

regardless of whether or not someone at the ad agency has ever read the wikipedia entry for feminism, the results are the same.  it's now being discussed and getting free broadcast beyond whatever time slots they'd originally purchased.

what i find hard to believe is that this controversy is going to lead to sales on their end.  "we've upset tons and tons of people, great!  now we'll get lots of people buying our drain product!!!"

any exposure whatsoever is a positive gain, especially for the advertising company, who can now put 'viral marketing' in their sales pitch to the next corporate entity who wants their product sold

you're now thinking about drain product where before you were not

edit: i was curious, so i checked out the firm, and this is their philosophy or w/e:

so, yeah, i would say that video with like a million views was absolutely premeditated to be as shocking and offensive as possible because getting people to do your advertising for you is a lot cheaper than buying TV spots

that who we are jpg actually belongs in this thread regardless of the context. my twin sister actually worked for a social media advertising company, though her job was setting up/posting on fake twitters and blogs for d-list celebrities, business ppl, and low-key political figures. one project I remember, she had to write a blog post for a dog whisperer on "how to get your dog to _____" with absolutely no guidelines or info, and she had to fabricate and plagiarize the entire thing

and yeah it's intentional. also consider the declining number of TV viewers - I know I would never have seen that commercial unless someone posted it, though I'm not gonna buy liquid plummer double impact (jesus christ but I remember the name of a drain cleaning product)

I only buy dove btw bc they support REAL women (as apposed to fake one's) set feminism back a few more years

yeah but what is the point of just thinking about their product?  like, i'm now going to go out of my way to not buy their product.  but that's a good thing because it's on my mind still?  that makes no sense to me.

most people were probably going to go with their product anyway since i think it's the biggest name anyway, so all they've done is alienate existing buyers without really gaining any new ones?  how is this good?

idk, read a book about it or something, or don,t, i don't care.  i'm not going to explain marketing basics 101 to someone who's just going to argue with me about it thereby ruining an otherwise good thread for other people.

if there are any blogs on this subject is I don't know of any. in general the blogosphere is pretty ingrained in/superficially preoccupied with stuff like advertising and marketing. I am wary of hurting the dumb topic with serious garbage tho so please look at my pic

idk I never bought liquid plummer bc it's more expensive than the others, but acc this two-in-one version seems like it might be useful for the really bad clogs..!

for everyone who is upset about the commercial (the majority seem to be the conservative abstinence-only type ppl: what will young teens think?), there are others who don't have any issue with it or even like it. and of the people who dislike it or find it offensive, how many of them would actually boycott the product? likely a negligible amount in comparison to the # of consumers reached using these methods

edit: anyway drain cleaners are a scam

a guy at Starbucks I think does affiliate marketing which is very mysterious and I think he's either a spammer/Incredible Asshole of The Internet and/or stuck in a hopeless pyramid scheme and will eventually autoerotically hang himself with an exceptionally long poo. He also has like 57 tabs open in Internet Explorer (?) at all times and I wonder if he realizes bookmarks exist

russian meme

The real role of the image was, of course, not to glorify tee-totaling, but exactly the opposite, to cement the drinking nation bravado: Drink with us! Only the pathetic weirdos refuse! That's why it's so commonly used on shot-glasses nowadays.
