Oh, man, while you guys are on the topic of genetics, did you guys read this article about Christopher Stringer doubting his own Out of Africa theory?

http://www.edge.org/conversation/rethinking-out-of-africa

And I liked this American Scientist review of two books on race. An excerpt:

Quote
Although biologists and cultural anthropologists long supposed that human races—genetically distinct populations within the same species—have a true existence in nature, many social scientists and geneticists maintain today that there simply is no valid biological basis for the concept.

The review suggests that for tens of thousands of years races have been going in the opposite direction, that they haven't been developing differences all this time, but rather genetically converging in all but the most superficial characteristics.

As for the recursion thing - one of the commenters in the Pullum article (one of the authors of the Everett reply paper?) emphasizes that "recursion" has a specific jargon-y meaning in linguistics, and that it's often misunderstood because examples usually follow the "Mom's Brother's Best Friend's Favorite dog" pattern of recursion and so imply the term means something less general than it does. Pullum and others say that their definition makes recursion such an obvious feature of language that it's nearly meaningless to point it out, but I think it's an important feature that helps distinguish between, e.g., ape and human language. But I don't wanna look for that stuff about recursion. My arm is tingly and my balls hurt.

I'm sort of writing a larger post on these, but quick dump: katsina dolls (tihu). They are amazing. If I had any relevant skills, I would definitely make a game based on these guys. I just can't decide if that's unconscionable cultural appropriation or a symbol of appreciation/interest. It wouldn't be for profit or anything, but they're pretty religious (embodiments of different nature spirits/deities), so ?_?. They'd be the world, pretty much, and then the game would be.. uh.. something about living in nature and not seeing many people? Kind of wanna keep cultural critiques out of it & just make an experience. MYTHOLOGICAL NATURESIM you could also make something kind of like Black & White mixed with Civ & these are the only units, deploy clown to teach people how to live, that's dumb/wasting the material

http://www.penn.museum/collections/search.php?term=kachina+doll&submit_term=Submit+Query - the Penn Museum site seems to be down right now, what on earth?? They haven't digitized their whole collection yet, either, so there are tons of accessioned artifacts w/ no picture & that's hardly any good
http://flashinblog.tumblr.com/tagged/katsina - i haven't looked through all of these, she labels more than most tumblr people but still.. not much

^this one looks much better than the picture would have you believe

hey i just researched a thing and found that it already sort of exists, though it's unfinished

I know nothing about LittleBigPlanet except there's a sack creature and maybe it is a 3d 3rd person platformer? Is its art style particularly similar?

kachina dolls are the best thing + the spirits themselves have really great stories.

not much else to add that you haven't gone over but here's a good page on them, plus the header image is an interesting interpretation:http://kachina.us/cult.htm
I was looking at that, but it's not very thorough!
That game I linked looks a little not like what I want (using them because they look cool, not as a major story/world element), but it's not out yet & there's very little information about the story, so maybe it'll be pretty great instead of just cute.

I have no memories of the Southwest but apparently they are commonly appropriated for logos and business mascots and things. Most of the really colorful (and elaborate) ones I've seen in museums are only around 20 years old, but that might just be lack of conservation (because the earlier ones would more likely have been used, or kept in private collections).

Other links:
http://140.247.195.10/katsina/default.html (Harvard Peabody's page from 1997, pages load intermittently) (also searchable in their online collection)
http://www.nativeamericanlinks.com/kachina/kachina.htm - very short field guide to the different types
http://www.squidoo.com/kachinas is not bad as a starting point (book recs, though it's more collector-oriented)
BASKETBALL CLOWN KATSINA - he loves to "root" for his favorite sports teams. whatever you do DO NOT light that cigarette!

bbc documentary on philip k dick from 1994. i really like the way they pieced this together. its not the usual celeb talking heads but rather the celeb talking heads are commercials shown on televisions selling you products but the products are fake and related to philip k dick

there is however a bit of the usual brian eno/nice ambient/deep talking crap but for the most part i really enjoyed it!!
