I'm with earl on this one, in that it depends on how much is changing with the new update. I'm not savvy with what is changing, but unless the new world generator gives access to the sky-realm or something, I don't really see the point.

I just don't want to start a new world if it's going to be discarded for another new one as soon as the 1.9 version is released. (but I did find out online how to discover where the chunks exclusive to slime spawning are located. So if a new world is to be had, then I'm going to pick my next house location very carefully.)

yeah, earl's option is a definite possibility if there's opposition to starting over.

1.8 is supposed to be fairly substantial, but we can decide when the time comes, when we know more about the changes.

there is gonna be some new map generation code, but it remains unclear if it will work on older maps. idk why it wouldn't, but it happened once or twice before. I think that was for the original snow-worlds though.

here's some stuff that might be in the next update:
NPC villages
Randomly generated dungeons
New biome code
Fully working Creative Mode (and individual admins can enter Creative Mode on a Survival Mode server if they choose)
Critical hits
Sprinting
More farming options

how? just by carving out a cave in the last 16 layers or some other method?

I also heard that the bow will actually require 'pull time' where I assume that the longer you pull the more flattened the trajectory and increased damage.

Yeah, I did notice some of the update features. If the NPC village creation is based on the world generation, it might be better to go with a fresh new world. Plus the biomes in the current world don't offer too much variety unless you are a really big fan of sand *which I am* (I just wish you could take your current inventory between worlds with you like you can in terraria, although that is something that has not yet been tested...)

No, basically by cheating, but I'm ok with that

Although I need to actually dig the space out before I can confirm it works, but it did say I had two neighboring chunks not too far from my original mineshaft. (there are a surprising number of those around the center, I wonder if there is any chance of three or more chunks spawning adjacent to each other)

there's probably a way we can at very least keep our inventories, unless they're hidden in the same file(s) as the map.

if not, a few items could be /given out at the beginning to compensate for the tediousness associated with beginning anew and harvesting trees by hand for that first craft table and going through wooden picks etc. depending one what people are up for.

Alright, well if we do go forward with the new map under the assumption that our personal inventories are linked to the server rather than the map itself, then once we know for sure we are starting a new map I'd like a little prior notice before the switch so that we can have time to properly prepare for it.

It's not working with low level tools I'm concerned with, it's more the hours of ore digging that I spent going entirely up in smoke because of having to start from square one. (I'm the kind of player who refuses to give up working with stone tools because of how much I overvalue iron and such, but if I know if I'm entering a new map with more iron available to me than what the map itself spawns with, I'd probably just make my tools iron to start out on with anyways. Although it's still true that the less iron I waste on tools, the more I can waste on making even more railroad/redstone material. *it's even more confounding now that you need to burn through stuff as scarce as iron in order to properly hoard cloth and shrubbery, regardless of how high the return is before your two pieces of iron are completely burned up*)

the host is doing some work in what's supposed to be a mostly 'seamless transition' to a new server. except we've been down for a few days.
the new IP is 64.31.15.107 whenever things are straightened out

edit: disregard that, 69.197.189.145 it is
