Hi. I want to see some good documentaries on almost any subject. I don't have any suggestions of my own right now but I'd like to hear yours.

Many Thank.

I recently downloaded Lake of Fire (mostly because it had a Chomsky bit in it and that made me curious). I haven't watched it yet but I've seen a few short parts and it looks pretty good.

One of my favorite documentaries is When the Levees Broke by Spike Lee, about Hurricane Katrina. Here's an excerpt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fEfnfNJreo it's mostly about the people themselves and how it affected their lives.

I've not seen too many documentaries but I really really really like Atomic Cafe.  I'm downloading Scared Straight! right now, I'll let you know if it's any good.

Exit Through the Gift Shop is great, it's that Banksy documentary about street art and art in general.

I enjoyed Century of the Self by Adam Curtis, which is about Edward Bernays, the rise of PR. and how it affected the USA. When I watched it with my friends we shouted at the TV a lot. I saw bits of another one of his, The Trap, which was also interesting.

I also really want to see This Is The Life, which is about Project Blowed and the west coast hip hop that evolved around it. Can't find it anywhere though.

Orson Welles' F for Fake

it's a overwhelmingly pretentious film, but i sincerely doubt i'll ever find a finer constructed documentary

granted the emphasis of the film is about 95% style/substance and 5% fact, so this may not be what you're looking for. the real informational value of the film is how it inadvertently became one of the most - if not the most - influential films of the last 40 years, with many people calling it the grandfather of the mtv generation of film editing. it's insanely ironic that a movie where welles earnestly calls himself a fraud and stylistically structures the movie to prove this ended up being his biggest contribution to film. makes my head hurt thinking about it.

again, more for film people than avid documentary viewers, but it's an interesting watch nonetheless. it's superficially a very fun movie.

i saw this when i was like 13 and legitimately enjoyed it. the production and editing are incredible, i was a kid and i still got something out of it. if anything listening to orson welles voice is entertaining enough in itself.

I really fell in love with the people and way of life depicted in Dark Days (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgi_N0hQqr4&feature=related). It chronicles NYC's "homeless" in an abandoned metro tunnel, where many of them set up shacks with appliances, pets, even wiring electricity, establishing a community of subterranean dwellers.

I just read about a documentary called Spine Tingler! which is about the films of William Castle.  Unfortunately I can't find a torrent anywhere and the only place I can even find a DVD is on Netflix.  I guess the only way I can see it is to have it sent to my parents' house right before the next time I go home.  I really want to see it though because William Castle really interests me and any chance to hear stories about his theater gimmicks is one I wanna take.

Lynch, about guess who, David Lynch, was mediocre, but I would recommend it to anyone involved in creative pursuits. His approach to art is encouraging, and it sheds light on why the hell his movies are the way they are.

welcome to the forums, noise! don't mind seemingly rude comments like this:

the word you're looking for is libertarian not liberal and they're awful sensationalist fucks. the latter being the single greatest criterion for making a documentary afaik

documentaries I've seen:
blue vinyl - vinyl is awful but this shit is derivative of Michael Moore's garbage and impossible to watch
louis theroux's law and disorder: philadelphia - ok if you don't mind theroux I guess
eden's lost and found: philadelphia - not sure this qualifies as a documentary and it's kind of bullshit but it's essentially about the environmental-social aspects of urban sustainability so I think it's ok
some other ecological stuff none of you want to see

when i made this topic i mostly wanted a documentary that just got me out of my bedroom for a while in a kind of less restricted way than a fictional film. i'd like to see/make a movie which is just kind of a series of i guess semi-spatially related people talking about things in an interesting way.
