Be incredulous if you wish. I'm not posting to make the state seem amazing, but some of the assumptions I've read in this thread are completely lol inducing.
to be fair, suggesting that ten years is enough time for the racial strata of a state to magically heal itself, and trying to further the idea that some too-little too-late gesture is some ultimate(or even worthwhile) sign of good will, is just as lol inducing as the rest of the goofy behavior in this thread. possibly more if you're at all versed on the subject.

so yeah, incredulous, but it's unquantifiable, so i don't really care too much either. i'm just one of those folks that get pissy when i hear people suggest that racial tension can be lessened by worthless symbolic gestures or some other mostly artificial act. it's my opinion that the only way to realistically negate racial tension is to sit around patiently waiting for the older generations to die and get the fuck off this planet, and then just hope that they didn't pass on too much of their seething ignorance to future generations. just remember that taking a flag down doesn't mean anything. that it was up there that long with the state capital not burnt completely to the ground probably says a lot about what's going on in people's minds.

It's bad when a Babysitters Club book is more honest about racism than some people. I read one that talked about the KKK and Japanese camps in the US and there was a grandma character who basically said MAN I WAS HOPING RACISM WOULD BE GONE IN MY LIFETIME WELP GUESS I'LL DIE FIRST."

Yeah I agree. I'm just biased I guess. It seemed like a big deal to me along with the people I knew at the time. Nothing revolutionary, but it was on the headline of every major local media source. Plus ten years seems longer to me than others since I have lived in this area since I was born (and it happened approximately half of my life ago)
