i don't believe any of these generalizations about america or parts of it

there are cool places in the south, but they're so far and few between and if you add that with the very widespread racism, poverty, etc it's just not a very desirable place of the country to be in.

I don't intend to generalize, just describe the majority of inhabited places. as has been said, the only major places that really do anything different are the few cultural cities, like new orleans. there are definitely loads of good reasons to go someplace like new orleans. what you might not grasp is how few and far between these places are. the space between IS largely inhabited, but there's really nothing of value there besides what's left relatively untouched

I don't even know what the inland south is like in terms of ecology though. I know out west it's pretty fucked and if the south is anything like that the only thing keeping these places relatively healthy is tradition and obstinance (also what keeps them from getting better)

really tho this seems like MOST of america, not just the south.  there aren't a lot of cultural hubs in america.

to be fair i'm pretty apologetic for the south but i think i need to just start making it only for kentucky because kentucky is just borderline south (fuck we weren't even confederate so i don't get why we have so many idiots with confederate flags here, that is literally only out of racism etc. because they can't pull a OUR HERITAGE excuse).  thinking back on every time i've been to the deep south, i don't remember a single time that i enjoyed being there.

You should come to South Carolina and chill with meeeeeee. You can see the great city of Columbia, SC (Population: hobos) and then take a scenic stroll down our sub-par riverwalk.

But SC does have a lot of beautiful sights, mainly along the coast or up in the northern part of the state!

kaworu seriously i'm not being a dick, but in like 75% of the south you will absolutely not be welcome. a flamboyant foreigner who's backpacking around arkansas? good luck.

Bullshit. How about the opposite. I'm not sure how you got these ideas but people in the southern states (yes, even southwestern) are far more welcoming and accepting than people up north.

I have never once seen a public act of racism in my hometown. That's saying a lot. As I'm typing this in a class of 100, I can see at least 50% of the people in this room are not white.

SC has one of the top ranking international student programs in the nation, and the number one ranked school of international business. Why would so many people of different ethnicities come to a state that is historically involved with racism? Maybe because it's 2011, not the 1930s

Didn't mention anything about racism in the sentence you are referring to. I was implying the diversity of the area I live in.

Dunno guise. Maybe I'm wrong. Just talking from my personal experiences

no he's saying that there is a fifty percent minority in his town and he's never heard anything racist.

I think you just hang around of like minded people. Almost everyone I know is racist on some level. And half of them are black. I think that I can confidently say that about 7 or 8/10 people my area say racist shit on some level.  racism is just fucking ignorance. Those people will at the same time go meet another kind of person and be like (well that one is cool) but still hate them as a whole because they're just really ignorant. so you couldn't say that a foreign person couldn't get along in the united states. Its not like the 50s or whatever multi-cultural people get along fine. Its not like we've got the clan patrolling out lookin fer darkies. I honestly think you'll be fine but you could possibly hear or see someone saying or doing something fucking stupid, it happens.

see i read this as "i've never seen racism--in fact, half of my class is non-white!"  if you didn't intend it that way you should have worded it differently because it definitely looks like those statements are related.

Not my reasoning. Don't put words in my mouth!

see i read this as "i've never seen racism--in fact, half of my class is non-white!"  if you didn't intend it that way you should have worded it differently because it definitely looks like those statements are related.

My bad. I should have pressed the enter button after the second sentence.

I have never seen a public act of racism. That doesn't mean I haven't heard anything racist around my friends or met a racist person. I have never seen someone refuse to serve a person of different ethnicity, seen people fight over skin color, or even heard someone threaten with a racist remark publicly.

You guys misunderstand. There is racial tension on every continent, in every country and in any state. A German person coming to the Southern US will not have a terrible trip because he or she looks or speaks differently. This thread has been turned into an anti-southern piece of propaganda because someone thinks racist whites reign supreme in the South. How does that relate to the OP's post at all?

The reasoning behind the 'classroom' point I brought up is simple. My area is diverse. I live in the South. I don't see racism publicly. Many cultures choose to live here; therefore, your stereotypes and generalizations sound absurd to me.

BTW Kaworu. You should definitely check out Charleston, SC. It's a historic town with a lot of old buildings and monuments to visit. It's on the coast so you can visit a place like Folly Beach while you're in the area. There's an old slave market you can go see that was transformed into a big marketplace with hand made crafts and lots of good food! The slave market is probably my favorite place in the city. It's interesting to see a market that's purpose was slave-trade transformed into a diverse cultural and social hub.

If you're into a more urban beach visit you can go up to Myrtle Beach. It's a big tourist attraction. Not my favorite, though.

You should definitely visit Savannah, Nashville, or Asheville for more historic visits. Again, if your in to urban visits, a big city to visit is Charlotte. It's a predominately wealthy city with loads of shopping.

If you want to go hiking, NC, TN, VA and even northern SC have great mountain trails all along the Appalachian mountains. Table Rock, SC is one of my favorite hikes and only takes a day. If you're in to heavy hiking, you can try the more difficult App. trails, or head out to the southwest to a place like New Mexico. NM has some great hikes with amazing scenery. Just look some pictures up (But it WILL be hot).

I think it is disrespectful. The confederate flag belongs in museums. The slave market is somewhat of an outdoor museum. It doesn't preach pride of the past like flying the confederate flag does.

You hardly see the confederate flag around here. You have to go into bumfuck middle-of-nowhere to see it. Even then it's scarce. It was somewhat of a southern pride fad back in 2000, now it's a sign of ignorance.

you're probably just racist without realizing it. it's ok, most other bourgeois white males are too.

also I doubt he's gonna come all the way to the coast, that's a several hours drive and he's probably not renting a car.
Bullshit. How about the opposite. I'm not sure how you got these ideas but people in the southern states (yes, even southwestern) are far more welcoming and accepting than people up north.
lol yes I'm sure new england would be less accepting of english people. you retaliated against what you see as an unfair assessment of the south with the typical southern-biased myth of the north.

to be fair i'm pretty apologetic for the south but i think i need to just start making it only for kentucky because kentucky is just borderline south (fuck we weren't even confederate so i don't get why we have so many idiots with confederate flags here, that is literally only out of racism etc. because they can't pull a OUR HERITAGE excuse).  thinking back on every time i've been to the deep south, i don't remember a single time that i enjoyed being there.
if you go out into parts of the country here (PA) you'll find plenty of people with confederate flags and "heritage not hate" bumper stickers and stuff. like at this one farmer's/flea market there's a stand that sell both normal confederate flags and also confederate flags with git-r-done on them.
