i've been wanting to play some emulated gameboy classic games recently, since i never had one as a kid.  i have almost no idea what to download, or what's fun, outside of just trying the big name stuff like mario and zelda.  any recommendations?

this was one of my favorite games as a kid. I still really like the graphical style and the sounds. it's a very complete game

other than that I had a terrible megaman game that I found in a parking lot (back when you could find games lying around) and it was dirty and chipped up like someone threw it. the first two pokemons, some zeldas, a bomberman, game & watch gallery, some marios, a kirby

it really was a different era. you had all these different big titles, and each was a very COMPLETE, well-designed game. most recent big title games I've played have felt really convoluted and unfinished, and it doesn't seem like there are any big games that everyone's talking about. not deservingly anyway

There was a topic on selectbutton recently about For Whom The Frog Tolls (not the real name, maybe should be) which mentioned how the limitations of the gameboy in terms of size, colour etc kind of forced the developers to make "humble" games. Instead of trying to dazzle / awe the player they maybe had to focus on uh small-but-well-formed etc games which were charming & compact instead. I'd need to play more GB games to check that but it does account for what I liked about a lot of the original gameboy games! I used to just consider the goofiness of stuff like Mario Land and Links Awakening to be a result of them being "off model" or made by different teams and so on but really yeah it could just be a result of shrinking down the properties into exaggerated toy versions!

anyway you should see if there's a rom for the gameboy camera since even without the ACTUAL CAMERA all the menu screens and minigames and music (by the earthbound composer iirc) rule and it's just ridiculously densely packed with cool, crazy shit.
i remember the felix the cat GB game being surprisingly good as well
the beavis & butthead game was pretty weird but idk if i'd call it good either
the rescue of princess blobette
garfield labyrinth no don't play this i just want to point out there is a game called Garfield Labyrinth
Monster Max was pretty cool if only for the densely detailed isometric puzzle-world

edit: havent played it yet but yeah For Whom The Frog Tolls / For The Frog The Bell Tolls too i guess!!

edit2 idk pokemons also but maybe cheat your way through that shit just because while there were maybe some cool songs and stuff / also missingno quests if that works in roms i really don't know if its worth the hours of obsessive grinding / collecting garbage which constitutes most of the actual gameplay

Yeah I was going to recommend For The Frog The Bell Tolls but I couldn't remember the full name.  Here's some other's I'd recommend:

Legend of the River King - A pretty neat FISHING RPG.  Can you believe it??? I can't.  But it's really fun
Survival Kids - Not played too far into it but it's a pretty neat series.
Shadowgate Classic - Port of an NES game but if you've not played Shadowgate definitely check this out
Kirby's Pinball Land - I actually like playing this better than regular Kirby games for some reason!

Also yeah Pokemon Red/Blue just to play around with the glitches (although the rest of it is pretty cool too, it's a really fun world to explore and the fact that you can break it so easily is a nice  unintended bonus)

Wow I know I've got more to post than this give me a chance to think of them and I'll post 'em.

some good and kinda obscure gameboy games:

booby boys is a fun maze game where you dig holes and when monsters fall into them you cover the holes back up and score points. the idea of digging up holes and luring unsuspecting creatures into them only to bury them for personal gain is kind of scary though.

chalvo 55 is a fun platformer where you can turn into a ball and bounce off things. it was originally supposed to be a virtual boy game but everyone knows how that ended

zas is a surprisingly good shoot'em'up with great graphics and some fun (although straight-forward) ideas

one of my favorites is cave noire, a roguelike simplified to the basic aspects for gameboy. it is kind of confusing at first but once you recognize the symbols and items it's really interesting

gameboy has a lot of other really weird, cool games and a lot of them are actually pretty creative. definitely worth checking out games for!

GB's kinda light on weirdo adventure games or RPGs. Ones in English, anyway. I don't know SHIT about the other ones.

Mysterium comes to mind. Has a cool, weird vibe. Never got far in it.

The SaGa/"Final Fantasy Legend" games look like normal 80s Square stuff but they're kinda bonkers. Really weird game systems and character classes like MUTANT, ROBOT, MONSTER.

Metroid II is neat but I reached a point where I was too bored to finish it. Spider Ball is a Nazi.

Argonaut did Days of Thunder and X, if you dig that vector look. Also Faceball 2000, even if you can play it on other platforms.

Great Greed is pretty wacky. Eco-themed RPG with a villain named BIO-HAZ and another character named MICROWAVE and locations with names like BURGER CASTLE. I think it just plays like any other JRPG from that period.

Maru's Mission is a Jajamaru game. It looks like a generic sidescroller but it's kind of aesthetically bonkers. You fight chaotic, bouncy waves of big, weird enemies. You go to Romania and fight WOLFMAN, minion of DRACULA, who looks like Universal's Wolfman and basically throws wolves at you. The screen flashes a LOT.

Ninja Taro is also a Jajamaru game. It's just a clunky Zelda clone. I support all Jajamaru game, no matter how bad...America support Jajamaru franchise...

Sneaky Snakes is a Snake Rattle n' Roll sequel that's a sidescroller. Like what would happen if Snake Rattle n' Roll fucked Wizards and Warriors, maybe?

Kemco's Sword of Hope games look/feel exactly like their ports of the ICOM MacVenture games, except they have JRPG stuff all over them.

Ultima: Runes of Virtue is nuts. Check it out.

I can't think of anything else at the moment. Trip World. Now I really can't think of anything else.

Wait, Donkey Kong '94 is good.

Thank you for reading my post...

Shiiiiiit I forgot Telefang how could I be so dumb????

I'm not sure if there's an official translation but I bring it up only because if there is don't play it.  Play the "Pokemon Diamond" version.  You'll be glad you did (also saving usually doesn't work when it's emulated, you'll have to use savestates.  Works fine on the real cartridge so I guess that's just bootleg games for ya)

i'm the world's most boring human so my favorite gameboy game was the deja vu I&II compilation that came out for GBC. it's been a long time since i played it, but i recall getting a kick out of it. worth checking out if you get a hardon for adventure games.

I have Deja Vu for the NES but I got it around the same time my NES died so I barely got to play it. I should give it another go since I liked Shadowgate so much.

Man some greats like SURVIVAL KIDS and SML3:OMGITSWARIO have already been mentioned, but I'll chip in with some that I used to have and play fuckloads when I was little:

Loony Tunes - Pretty fun platform game!
Pokemon TCG - As lame as it is, it's actually pretty brilliant to battle people for cards and shit. Plus you can do it in secret, with no judgemental eyes on you!
Duck Tales - Just a port of the NES game, but if you haven't played it then get ready for some sweet green and black duck action!
Kirby's Dream Land - Really easy platform game and shit (you can FLY indefinitely haha), but soooo cute!
Mortal Kombat - Nothing says nostalgia like playing a really clunky version of a really old game. Probably the clunkiest port ever, but it is still pretty simplistic and fun.

A really good plan if you're NEW to Gameboy is to DL a complete romset (the games are so small and you can torrent them all really easily and quickly) and see how many are in there. Choose a number from 1 - X, then play that game in the list. Paolo and I have spent many an evening doing that, and often you get some pretty dire games. You DO get a lot of fun ones though, so it is a FINE PLAN overall!!
Hey hey hey

I've only gotten through the first few posts so far, but my favorite so far has been Monster Maxx.  I'm actually pretty blown away that it's a GB game.

Play GB tetris on a real gb. become astonished of the vibe the console gives. that being said :( i haven't played GB BUT i do "vouch" this topic...! edit Really, jesus, all we ever need is millions of strange/trippy/endless of SMB2. preferably on gbc or something i guess. why nobody doesn't make self-absorbed, honest/innocent childhood play/dream games anymore? must have bland 80's vhs commercials in between. everybody should fly in a rocket AT LEAST once in their childhood into the world of whales (they're cute!! they're harmless!! AND they blow water up for you to get up! don't drop into the icy water.)

editedit its like uh non-dangerous experience of the water level in mario64 whoa there's a water snake let him get out. a ship! let's dry it up MAYBE and let's imagine something else inside. i can't get out??? What the!!! my immersion is astonished, there must be some kind of real reason why mario can't get out... maybe the ship has sunk into the sand because we messed something or idk. theres a shell! let me ride on it forever, let's skate around the map. oooh i cleared the level up/it's not cloudy anymore! let me shoot myself with the cannon everywhere for hours, let's try getting behind the cliffs/edges of the map, SURELY you can get behind somehow if you aim properly. try catching on stalagmites. let's press z and move to make mario supposedly sleep. let's do all this preferably with the monkey has taken his cap so you can imagine mario waking up in lone island and he wonders why is he stranded and where is his cap. let's explore the underwater for fishes! first person view. i can go on with this forever you guys (MARIO64/PILOTWINGS64: THE ULTIMATE HOLIDAY/RELAXING RESORT/GAME FOR KIDS)
and goldeneye is just a bizarre vortex (yeah tbh i think "vortex" kind of explains the goldeneyes feel what with dark graphics big frightening distances the music the bizarre, non explained multiplayer maps aaa why is the sky red why there are HIDDEN ENTRANCES to nowhere really or to really useless (SOMETIMES LOCKED!!!) underground area! goldeneye multiplayermaps atmosphere = terranigma the multiplayershootergame) filled with Goldeneye violinsynths/prince violins, im nearly expecting to hear Orchetra Hit.midi somewhere in the sounds. also Y E S for making map before the Dam, that onws i would had done the same as a kid. zooms into the weapon midair etc. the sniper is the most powerful weapon in the game/i loved to use it because it didn't really seem to make sense as a weapon and i guess i liked the sounds/the feel shooting with it, SUPER SOAKER/water gun like. make a map or imagine how bond jumps right into the airshaft without even ropes and searches for the entry to the facility area. try entering or shooting the containers again at the airplane map to the facility.
the kid's imagination is amazing/powerful and mutants like Quest 64 only feed on this, the true freak/outsider art affected generation, you never even got close 80s. not even close. here comes the veneers of the democracy collapsing on Prince's "It". I Think Of U plays when rami goes to sleep as a kid, falls on sleep on Blast Corps and Shadows to the Empire 64. never shuts down the console due to a rumour he heard.

*cough* i'm sorry. i got carried away with uh great feelings/feeling again how it felt/the world seemed back when i was a kid and uh Sun Ra nods approvingly as kids form their own worlds and reality and physics and visions in their heads from the N64 games and 80's tv ads, Game magazines and old nintendo bootleg games. i can't believe how NOT MYSTERIOS this stuff/games were in reality!! it's like... why didn't they FILL those games with all that stuff? i take the newest Nintendo Power with my hands shaking, looking at the single screenshots in bewildrement and imagine how the game is and what mysteries there is in there. why aren't the fucking games going after this for real (and not for novelty/to SELL, to uh i guess art or to explore games as art idk y o u k n o w thecatimes). i played pokemon yellow and yeah, i totally did like how the world really did seem super mysterious in how colourless and NON-CHALANT it was in every way. bland. the music playing at the exact pace, repeating endlessly without any cuts or clear culminations in melody. it's almost suspicious... the dialogue - inspired by pokemon yellow and it's mystery in dialogue (franz kafka looks horrified after 15 hours of playing) David Sylvian wrote Ghosts... the game rumours... i looked for those lv22 rare candy in that field just behind the main village forever...

i got carried away AGAIN!!! and in the wrong topic!! i'm sorry!!

edit did i already say Pokemon Yellow/Franz Kafka the Game? all is hopeless all is gonna kill ya, all humans you see are waiting you to pass by so they attack you and throw you a line... watch slowly how the screen flashes white and purple and slowly watch as the hp bar reaches to the bottom while hoping it won't, see as the dialogue slowly says It's super effective, hear the dying noise of your pokemon... nonchalant, nonchalant... walk in the screen horrified as the screen flashes for no reason, discover that it means that your pokemon is dying to poison slowly which doesn't help the atmosphere at all. see pikachu with you, see how he reacts on your bad actions feel guilt and shame for no reason, confusion... aaaa fuck me sorry. shut up ramci.

EDIT: they propably didn't explore that properly if only because that the kids still need a clear goal than bad goals eg. pilotwings 64, where is my quick laps and guns, miyamoto-bitch... i guess i'll just try exploring the edges (glitches as we call it nowdays) of the city/highway map by myself then... stay in the Princess Peach castle area for ever, frantically anxiously try to avoid dropping in the water while WRONG WAY! screams on the top of the screen, STILL try to find secrets (maybe i can get in the castle...! see princess peach, become congratulated). :---( this is going nowhere, do i really need to log out of my account.

edit gulp is this really page 2... also based on the first post i'm assuming tristero's gonna play them anyway but just to say that yeah the gameboy marios are real good. the second one has a big island filled with "zones" and a chunky look which i like also theres a level where you crawl through a whale's guts avoiding spiked bones and swimming through gloopy jelly which is pretty gross. the first one has strange mario versions of real world places eg egypt china easterisland and uh a ufo zone i guess but the real attraction is the kind of tiny tinkertoy vibe to it all. earlchip mentioned it but the wario game is good too and like the logical extension of mario2 chunkiness. you're a big burly beefy cubedude and you ram into blocks and people and bounce around and smash everything and it's all very physical!! at the end of each level you see wario's treasure room filled with mysterious items such as a golden baseball glove and ram's head while wario chuckles deviously until you hit a button. there's also a lot of secrets and everything/everyone is named after some kind of food related thing.

this is for bonzi_buddy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWY9g8x4JgA

alternate reality Peaches' Castle with slightly off feel/bit of mushroom kingdom wilderness before the castle and non-functioning doors bonzi_buddy is obsessed with finding a way to go through get back into the facility

also Deja Vu for NES at least was depressing as fuck - wander through faded yellow Chinese food menu picture world - old timey 20's -50's was actually in these colors and causes instant clinical depression

I can't believe I forgot this one but also check out Shantae.  I remember reading a big thing about indie game design in Nintendo Power when it came out (and also a lot about how mechanics like collision detection work) and it was really cool.  Didn't actually play the game until the last year or so, it's pretty dang good.  I want to play the DS version soon (now that I have a 3DS and can access the DSiWare).  Yes definitely check out Shantae it is a good game so check it out it is good.

wow exactly. combine this with the speech patterns implying gender roles/trappings of 50s society present in awful old movies and shows that no one should remember, it's enough to kill you

ahahha my god ragnar. i'm glad i didn't find that out as a kid or there'd be another crack/dissonance in my reality to be afraid of (wait, where is the black space after the door from Mario 64? maybe you should try steering/try finding a glitch RIGHT behind the door if you can uh find the black space or get in or something. it's worth there. i think i got there (in mario 64), well at least i shot myself thru the princess glass icon with the cannon painstakingly). you can walk back OUT (my mind exploded) but when you walk back in, you transit inside the castle...!

in real life, rami carefully slowly looks at the sun ... nothing happens, eyes water and after-image. :( maybe close to death or something idk.

also was that a diss earl... also i forgot to tell you about your trailer uh i can't find the link but how/why did you make that repeating disco-square or whatever patterns at the end of your trailer... why?!? i uh can uh never mind but honestly earl you are propably suspicious of this stuff but this is my childhood ne. okay? ninja jajamaru-kun on nes glitching from the start (remember my post in the most rare game you have) and so forth. i would had propably loved/being equally mystified by that disco square pattern. i think it's good. i don't know if it means anything to you aaand i don't know what's the purpose of squares but i'd be ready to call that... art. *gulp*

i need to see your trailer again!! thanks for the skelly back then.

sometimes i worry about this stuff, getting lost in my headache/pressure in my brain-behind eye area for good. i don't think it's uh actual pressure behind eyes though, that is a serious condition.
