I feel like this

also I think this dudes my favorite author and I never knew it.

I never knew he did fear and loathing

and I never knew johnny depp was such a badass

Crazy that you mentioned this. I literally just watched a documentary with that quote two days ago.

Definitely a great journalist pity he got burnt out in the last few decades of his life.

Also Johnny Depp is a badass. For thanking the hospital that treated his sick daughter he came back dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow and read all the sick children stories for four hours. Also when Heath Ledger died he flew back and acted in that shitty Dr Parnasses movie for free and the money was set aside for Heath's child.

Actually I also read, Bonzi, that some benefits of coffee is lost when drank in the form of decaf. I can't remember the details though. *shrugs*

And milk, Vellfire, I hear both a lot of good and a lot of bad things about. But milk is delicious and I'm among the 20% of the world that isn't lactose intolerant at age 20 so I'm drinking it.
Coffee does have health benefits.  It can protect against diabetes.  But, because coffee beans are burnt it contains carcinogens like Benzopyrene bleh, but then again it could protect against PACs.

what is it called? the documentary?

I never knew about the sick kids or heath's kid. I was talking about him paying for thompson's funeral processions. Now he's even more awesome.

I saw that quote somewhere and it struck a chord. I feel the same way sometimes. And I think that is the best way he could explain why he did what he did. I watched the rum diaries and I really liked it. I need to go get all his stuff. He's got a dark realistic way or presenting subjects and ideas. Its like he slips them in as a sidenote to the narrative and humor of the story. But he's not, thats what the whole thing is about. Like, the way they talk about the perversion of puerto rico and stupid american tourism. I worked at the same island the movie is about and we moved that same rum that they filtered out and got drunk on. It was really cool seeing all of that.

On the coffee discussion: I've specifically heard that it reduces your risk of heart and liver disease as well.

But yeah, I know its got a lot of negative and positive effects all mixed into it. I wonder if the overall effect on average life span is positive or negative though.

Assuming one trusts this source: http://www.wholefoodsmagazine.com/news/breaking-news/cup-joe-proves-lengthen-lifespan, it would seem to be, overall, slightly beneficial.

actually going back to the subject of knowing something is bad for you: hearing/knowing "that's not good for you", and actually knowing and comprehending the extent to which it is harmful to your health, are two different things -

like when there was a solar eclipse when I was a kid, and the teacher said "don't look at the eclipse or it will hurt your eyes, we'll make special glasses for it". I was sick like always so I missed the event, but I decided to take a peek on my own and see if it physically hurt. it didn't, it wasn't even bright, so I kept on looking for like two minutes, absorbing all those UV rays with satisfaction. a few years later I found out the truth, and at that time I was annoyed that the teacher didn't give us the explanation just cuz we were kids.

I think ppl must do that same sort of thing all the time, I occasionally witness it. earlier today I saw someone on youtube defending energy drinks for some reason, claiming all the bad stuff you hear about them must be exaggeration

Doctor Parnassus was a confusing mess imo.

I'm gonna have to agree with earl. When I was little I asked my mom what cancer was and where it came from. She said it was a disease people get from "eating shit you're not s'posed to"

so naturally I thought she meant crayons

This is why you don't glaze over the truth for kids, you tell them the absolute truth, they will be better off, IMHO. I say this because I absolutely wish my parents did so for me. The only exception could be arguably Santa Claus. But I wonder sometimes if he's worth the heartbreak later. Admittedly, I did not ask enough questions as a kid, but I can't help but wonder if in my specific case where I did ask more questions I would of got either wrong or 'kid friendly' answers.

Don't underestimate those younger than you. :|

I just drank a chilled starbucks frappuccino for the first time. It was delicious, but looking at the nutrient content, I can understand why.

Really though, its still a thousand times better than soda. For one, there is about 3.5 times more caffeine in a frappuccino than a cola per oz. (this is a good thing for me, I want more caffeine) Calorie wise they are the same oz to oz. Sugar-wise frappuccino has a little over a third of the amount colas do. Also has the minor benefit of a little bit of calcium and protein.

A lot more sodium though. And it has cholesterol and fat. But still, this is probably the least healthy coffee I could drink and its still vastly better for me than the colas I drank.

So yeah, I think switching is a very good idea in my case.

yeah I'm gonna straight up not sugar coat anything and tell my kids shit like it is. If my kid ends up playing too many vidgams and starts running around telling other kids he's going to blow their heads off or shit like that that kids do I'm going to show him pictures of the charcoal babies and dismembered victims of the gaza strip raid or whatever current atrocities are going on. If he/she ends up going to a shit public school that misinforms and brainwashes them with that "dare program" shit I'm going to show them documentaries on how all of those bad drugs were/are being shipped in by the CIA. What they actually do to the human body and how shit that he's been eating or drinking everyday is so much worse for him. And if my kid starts fucking at an early age all I gotta do is buy a bunch of contraceptives and sit him down infront of teen mom for a couple hours. I'm gonna teach him how to defend him/herself at a young age but how to be a compassionate and thoughtful person so they don't turn into bullies. If youngun does turn into one I'm going to beat their ass so they know what it feels like and sit them infront of the movie "precious" for about six hours on a constant loop.

This will either land me in jail or I'll be the ultimate parent or both.

actually, when I was a kid my mom would always tell me about children who were abducted and how they were found etc. not on purpose, she'd just get really upset and worried about it and end up telling me so I'd be careful and stay safe. as a result, and in combo with my innate anxiety, I was always mortified whenever one of my friends' stepdads drove me home at night without my friend in the car. I'd think back to this one case of a kid who was kept in the woods and who'd try to keep his captor talking becuase when he was talking he wouldn't hurt him, so that's what I did I just kept them talking so they wouldn't pull off the road and take me into the woods. it was just a weird phobia that no one knew about or coulda forseen, but came from some info that would have been better left untold/at least not in detail

so yeah, it's definitely a good idea to keep some stuff from your kids. there really are some things you should avoid exposing them to until they're older, though it's wrong to attempt to control everything. kids don't need to know in explicit detail how violent and terrible people can be. but then there's stuff like sex and "where babies come from", completely harmless info that's for some reason lied about and ends up being the source of shame/self-esteem issues as we already know

and I know ur not serious gonna start being a parent tomorrow, but I can't press post without writing that of course most of those things you mentioned can be prevented in the first place if ya lead by example & aim to be a present and caring parent...no new info here of course

Since we're talking about health:
I'm dabbling with 80/10/10 diet.  It's a raw diet where 80% of cals come from fruit, 10% from protein foods and 10% from fat foods.  So I eat shit loads of raw fruits and huge salads every night.  Here is my food log for today:

http://doktormartini.tumblr.com/post/24865197373/food-log-for-june-10th

I use www.fitday.com (really cool site it's free too) to track this stuff and it gave me a list of all nutrients.  The only ones it said I was deficient in (other than b12 [i take a supplement like all vegans should] and D [I'm ][/I'm]) are calcium (612.1mg - RDA is 1,000mg), Selenium (25.1mcg - RDA is 55.0mg) and Zinc (7.4mg - RDA is 11mg).  I'm also low in sodium but that's not really a bad thing.  Selenium can easily be remedied by eating a Brazil nut once or twice a week.  Also, this is just for today.  I don't eat the same things every day so the numbers will be different and hopefully average out to be fine.  Also I'm pretty sure most people are deficient in one or the other anyways.[/i]
