yeah if you get banned from SA (and we're talking BANNED not even just probated) for something you said being considered offensive/terrible it PROBABLY IS.  i don't see a lot of bans on SA that didn't deserve it.

i don't see whats so wrong with that. you get out what you put in, and if you don't like the heat get out the kitchen. i'm not about to put that much thought into a single post myself but i appreciate those that do.

and back when GW was active there were plenty of unfair and unwarranted bans. it was free to join but this place had an elite streak of its own back in the day

 whatever, to each his own.

you can have a well-written, informative post without being so stale and nerdy. probably not about law school tho, true

but I don't get the relevance of "you get out what you put in, and if you don't like the heat get out the kitchen". what are you putting in, in order to get posts like that? or are you just saying that's the name of the game at SA, if you don't like it don't sign up. I already knew that and I wasn't planning on becoming a member! are you not allowed to share opinions on SA unless you're trying to persuade others to adopt your view. every discussion must end with each party taking a bow after reaching a piecemeal agreement

nah i didn't mean it like that. you don't have to be one of those dudes that makes a 5 post long mega OP, and most members dont, though you will be more involved in the community if you do so. the place has something like 150,000 members, so some try to stick out for internet cred i guess.

but plenty of the forum conversation is very casual, and most posts are not thesis esque in length and content you know. they want you to add something on a semi regular basis, but the community definitely has a sense of humor about it and isn't as strict or stuffy as i think you see them.

Something awful could be a city. In fact, with very little resources it could become a little favela where people can practice objectivism.

I realize it's not all like that law post, but I think some level of stuffiness permeates the community. that's what happens when you combine the largest forum with a membership fee. you said yourself you'd get probation there for a lot of the posts you make here. like even most of the humor I've seen from there has been "yes it's funny time now, let's be funny within a prescribed category until funny time is over"

What do you mean by stuffiness though?  I mean, if you put any level of effort into your post (like, you aren't posting a 5 word one-liner) and aren't posting completely HORRIBLE opinions then you're not going to get probated or banned.  I don't get the SANCTIONED FUNNY TIME thing either, people post some pretty damn hilarious jokes in perfectly normal threads, they're just...on-topic.  They're good jokes with effort put into them.  What is it that you think you're not allowed to do on SA that you should be able to?  This isn't an advertisement for SA, I'm not trying to talk you into parting with your $10 but your characterization of SA doesn't really match what I've seen of it and it's confusing me.

Like I said before I mostly stick to a handful of topics on SA, and they're things that I really don't know if I'd be able to discuss anywhere else.  I don't mind having paid $10 like two years ago for that.  I come to GW to talk to you guys specifically as my buddies, but there are certain topics that I definitely don't think could have as good of a conversation here (especially as it is now with only a handful of members).  I mean I don't think GW is going to have an excellent feminism thread anytime soon, seeing as how we have, what, 3 women at the moment?  That's just not something I can get out of GW.  At the same time, I'm not e-buddies with random people at SA, and that IS something I come to GW for.

the fact that you're being judged on your effort is part of what makes it stuffy. plus the membership fee, the attempts to keep things civil and supposedly quality. and I was just talking about the few humor threads I've been linked to, it should prob be obv what I'm talking about

it's like the opposite end of the spectrum from gaiaonline, a place where you could post pretty much whatever you want and not get shit for it, as long as you followed a set of arbitrary rules. two ends of the spectrum of nerd. I'd rather be somewhere in between largely useless and redundant chaos and sterile tryhard staleness.

most of us are experts in feminism tho and I'm offended you'd suggest otherwise. what are the odds of running into misogyny on SA vs here

A conversation with only men on feminism is boring.

I never said that you guys were misogynistic. A feminism thread with only 3 women in it though is not going to be a good thread. It really needs WOMEN'S REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES.

I mean a thread here about the experiences of transgender people would be pretty bad considering we have, what, one (active) trans member? Swordfish is, right? If not make that NONE as far as I know. That doesn't mean we CAN'T DISCUSS these issues, but you can't get the sort of depth that makes for a good topic without input from the people involved.

somethingawful is the Internet equivalent of a decaying fascist state.  instead of there being cars with fins on them on the street, CRT monitors in the offices, and brutalist architecture which touts the righteous goals of the revolution, there's a button for digg (for christ's sake it's 2012) and forums software that would be dark comedy if you didn't have to pay ten dollars for privelage of using it.

there are approx. 3 safe zones for 'being funny' and then the rest of the forum for the most stilted and boring discussion outside of the political discussion board of gamefaqs (i'm assuming this is a thing, and that they love ron paul).

every funny safe zone emulates fyad by sucking its dick as hard as it possibly can, earnestly trying to distance itself from goony stereotypes and fitting them all the more snugly because of that effort.  by parroting 4chan memes that are nearly a decade old, people form 'crews' and try to distinguish themselves as funny posters in a cult of personality with richard 'lowtax' kyanka as its head (hello, please join roger ebert's 'tasting things' club... thanks).  for some reason the domain somethingawful.com redirects to a deprecated SEO page from 1999 with spam articles made to resemble comedy articles from the same period, mimmicking a style that even idiots like seanbaby and maddox had the good sense to get out of in 2004 or w/e.  one must instead type the longer forums.somethingawful.com to get to the only part of the site with any content that has utility.

every thread has a very distinct party line (even threads I agree with, like the aforementioned leftist political ones) which replace the site's earlier ridiculous libertarian leanings with a desk chair maosim that is both embarassing and intellectually dissonant.  this is enforced by a report system that you have to pay to be a part of, meaning that the CareHard level is through the fucking roof, especially when coupled with the fact that the only people who volunteer to be moderators are those who are such empty husks that the act of playing authoritarian strong man to a bunch of computer janitors and teenagers is something that they will lovingly engage in for free.  proper punctuation and lack of, ahem, 'leet speak' is taken as a point of pride rather than as a point of 'honestly who gives a fuck in this day and age'.

this is all to say that somethingawful is both too big to be useful as a place for humor and too small and old to be useful as a place like reddit, where you click on the links and ignore the dipshit commentary.

ganbare and thanks
